S5 No Network Connection

Problem: Just updated my phone 3 days ago and it’s now worse than before. I switch on my data or WiFi and when I connect to the Internet all I get is no network. I then have to reboot my phone to get it to work, but after a while the Internet stops working and I have to reboot again. Also it’s chewing up my data allowance. This has to be the worst update I’ve come across.

Solution: It looks like some form of old software data has not been completely removed during the update process and is causing this problem right now. I suggest that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset to fix this issue. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. You should first check if the issue still occurs. If it does then you might want to consider rolling back to the previous software version. Todo this you will have to manually flash the previous firmware to your phone. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

S5 Not Connecting To Mobile Data After Software Update

Problem: My dad recently did the new system/software update on his Samsung Galaxy S5. Ever since, he cannot connect to mobile data, even though he has plenty of data. It will connect through wifi though. We have done pretty much everything we can think of except a factory reset.

Solution: When the phone got the latest software update the APN settings might have changed. Try to check the APN settings of the device and make sure that it matches the settings of your network.

If the APN settings of your phone are correct and the phone still can’t connect to mobile data then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Reboot the phone
  • Toggle Airplane Mode
  • Make sure that the mobile data switch is turned on
  • Turn off the phone and remove the SIM card. Wait for a minute then reinsert the SIM card. Turn on the phone then check if you are able to use the mobile data connection.

If the above steps fail then I suggest that you backup the phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Only Connects to Wi-Fi Network

Problem: without wi-fi network, my phone cannot connect network. If Wi-Fi is available, network connection is fine. I think I might be stopping 4G connection with some security app.

Solution: If you suspect that a security app is causing this issue then try to start your phone in Safe Mode and check if you are able to use the mobile data network in this mode. When your phone operates in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are prevented from running. If the mobile data works in this mode then the problem could be caused by a security app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If however the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then I suggest that you check the APN settings of your phone. Make sure that these settings match the network APN settings. Make the necessary changes in your phone if needed. You should also check if you have an active mobile data subscription.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then I recommend that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete try to check if the issue still occurs.

S5 Mobile Data Stopped Working

Problem: I have a galaxy s5, and I’ve had it for a few months now. I never had any problems until a couple of weeks ago, when my mobile data just decided to stop working. When I go into my settings and select to turn it on, it just doesn’t connect. Usually the 4g symbol comes up by my service bars, but nothing shows up. How can I fix this? Thank you!

Solution: Before troubleshooting the phone make sure that you are in an area with a good mobile data signal. You can verify this with another mobile device. You should also make sure that you have an active mobile data subscription.

To troubleshoot the phone follow the steps listed below.

  • Reboot your phone. Sometimes all that needs to be done is to re-establish the connection between your phone and the network.
  • Turn off your phone and take out the SIM card. Reinsert the SIM card after a minute then turn on your phone. Check if your mobile data works.
  • Check the APN settings of your phone. Make sure it matches the APN settings of the network.
  • Try using a different SIM card on your phone.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Wi-Fi Not Turning On

Problem: My galaxy S5 neo WiFi doesn’t work. When I try turn it on the screen just says “turning on” but doesn’t actually ever turn on. I’ve tried resetting the phone but still nothing happens. How could I get WiFi to work on my phone?

Solution: If a factory reset doesn’t fix the problem then this might be a hardware related issue already. I recommend that you have this checked at a service center.

S5 Could Not Open Connection To Server

Problem: Hello, I am having a problem that is a bit more technical that most of the details in your troubleshooting guides and i could really use so input. I have 2 problems but i feel like they may stem from the same issue. I bought my galaxy s5 used about a month ago and it has had some charging and connectivity issues that i have more or less be able to remedy myself. But now i am attempting to connect to my families business mail server through my gmail app to see purchase orders on my phone as i had running before on my s4. It is a personal POP3 server but no matter what login settings i give, connection attempts give me a “couldn’t open connection to server” notification. This happens whether i am on wi-fi or a data network connection. Also i downloaded The app VNC viewer, which ran fine on my old phone and still works on my father’s phone/at the desktop, to remote control our system management desktop. I can only connect to the desktop server only when my phone is on the business wi-fi and not any kind of data network connection. Obviously this is counter-intuitive as i need it to access when i’m off site. When i try to connect i get a notification saying the server could not be contacted. Could these issues be symptoms of the same problem? I’d appreciate any advice you have.

Solution: Since this is a used device we are talking about I suggest that you start the phone fresh by backing up the phone data then doing a factory reset. Once the reset is complete check if there are any new software updates. Update the phone software and apps if needed. Once the phone has been updated try to set up the business email using the Gmail app. You should also check if the VNC viewer works. If the issue disappears then the problem could be caused by an app installed in the phone previously  or some form of software glitch.
