Galaxy Note 4 keeps rebooting on its own during the initial setup process, other issues

Problem #1: Galaxy Note 4 won’t boot to recovery mode after failed system update

Hello. My problem occurred after my last software update. It didn’t finish and got stuck at the boot process. I took out the battery to reset it and start it again. Since then it got really slow in responding and restarts itself sometimes. After a week or so I didn’t turn on anymore and so I tried to flash it with the Odin program. In the end nothing helped so I left the phone for a while and was trying to find a way to fix it.

Just recently I thought I would try it before I send it in and it started again. It’s working at the moment but with the same problems as in the beginning after the update. Slow responding and restarting sometimes on its own. I believe it just needs a complete recovery to delete everything and upload the system again. I have got a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. And by the way I tried to press the sound button, power button and home button and I only can choose between restart or continue with a download probably for connecting to the PC and copy data. But it doesn’t do any other options to wipe my cache data like said on the Internet by keep pressing the sound and home button after letting go the power button. I hope you can help me to fix all of it. Sincerely. — Marvin

Solution: Hi Marvin. Permanent software problems can occur if a system update is interrupted. This is the main reason why a user must ensure that there’s enough battery power left during an update. Turning off a device while it’s still updating can make permanent changes to the core operating system files resulting to boot problems or total failure. We don’t know what happened to your system exactly but if you can no longer boot it to recovery mode, then the only thing that you can try is to see if you can manually flash the firmware via Odin mode.

Manual flashing varies by phone model so we recommend that you look for a good one using Google. We don’t provide specific flashing guides in this blog.

Before flashing the firmware, we also suggest that you try to flash the stock bootloader first so you can then attempt to factory reset the phone. A bad bootloader may be the reason why you can’t load the recovery software at this time.

Below are the general steps on how to flash a bootloader. Again, just like in flashing a firmware, the steps may change slightly in this one so make sure to do some research how to flash the specific bootloader of your phone.

  1. Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
  2. Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
  3. Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
  4. Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
  5. In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
  6. Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
  7. Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note 4 not turning on

I have a Note 4 910T that I purchased on E-bay few months ago. The phone was working for a couple of months then it started freezing up and lagging then went completely dead yesterday. It is not charging now and I cannot get it to boot up into recovery mode. The last message I was seeing before it died was something about the eMMC failing to read and the phone was rebooting to the download mode. I connected my phone to my PC but no luck. It is dead!! Do I need to replace the whole motherboard? Please help me! Samsung did not offer help since the phone was out of warranty and nobody in town knows how to fix it. I just hate to lose this phone. I am even more scared to buy another Note 4 because I suspect all of them have defective motherboards. Please let me know if anything can be done to rescue my phone. Thank you for your time. Solution: Hi Tim. Unless you have the technical expertise and tools to open and repair your phone, there’s really nothing much that you can do except to hope to be able to start the phone to alternate modes. If you can’t do that at this time, you must send the phone in if you want to see if there’s a chance at all of reviving it.

For reference, here are the steps on how to boot your Note 4 to alternate modes:

Boot in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 4 drains battery fast, not detecting network

I have a complicated issue with my Galaxy Note 4. In fact it has several issues all come at once (since last night):

 

  • It cannot recognize Network no matter what I do.
  • It keeps overheating within one minute after turn it on. Even if it is on flight-mode.
  • If I take the battery out and put it back, then press the power button, it won’t turn on until I plug in the charger. Even if the battery is fully charged. Moreover, I can turn it on and off any number of time while on battery as long as I don’t take the battery out for one minute and put back.
  • The battery drains very quickly, like in less than 2 hours.

 

These problems persist even after I removed the SD card, the SIM card, and did a factory reset.

History: My phone was fine until yesterday. When I went to bed last night I plug in to the charger, leave charging over the nigh while it is ON as normal. Everything was fine and normal. After a while, I notice my phone is flashing. I hold the phone and looked closely and found that It shows a big battery sign flashing on a black screen background as if it turned off. The phone was really hot at that moment. Since I was sleepy I just put it in a flight-mode and continue my sleep. When I woke up today, I found my phone VERY Hot, with No Service. The battery keep draining super fast (It used to stay up 24 hours or more). Could you please give me a hint or clue? In particular, what part should I replace? Any help or suggestion is highly appreciated. Thank you so much.. — Sultan

Solution: Hi Sultan. All items except the first one may be caused by a bad battery so replacing it should be the top of your priority. If your Note 4 has been around and is over 2 years old at this time, it’s very likely that the issues are due to a malfunctioning battery. Lithium-ion batteries like the one in your phone starts to gradually lose capacity the moment they leave the factory. Over time, as you charge and discharge it, its capacity to hold a charge may decrease to the point that it can no longer work properly.

Before you commit to getting a new battery though, we recommend that you try two software troubleshooting steps in this case. The first one is battery recalibration to help the operating system read battery levels properly. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
  2. Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
  3. Charge the phone without turning it back on.
  4. Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
  5. Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
  6. If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
  7. Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
  8. Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
  9. Repeat the cycle once.

If the issue remains after recalibrating the battery, do a factory reset to reset all software settings back to their defaults. This will eliminate possible bugs that may have developed in the normal course of usage. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  7. When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  8. The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.
  9. Observe the phone for at least 24 hours without installing any app or update. If all issues appear again during this time, consider replacing the battery or the phone itself.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 4 keeps rebooting on its own

Hi. In our country, Tanzania, we often have network issue despite 4G. WELL beside that, my phone has never brought auto shutdown issue ever before but since morning it keeps on re-writing only Samsung and off till evening around 6pm. I Googled using another phone how to restart. I did a step of volume+power+menu button restored and got on but from that time till now it was on charge and showed 80%charge. When i attempted to call someone it got off and restarted. on plug in with 0% after 10min showed 30% then 82% but just as i remove from switch it gets off. i tried restoring reboot system update it still gets automatically off and on??, how will you help me as all my communication gone 0? I have Samsung Note 4 910H. PLEASE HELP ME. MY CHARGE GETS OVER AND IT KEEPS ON BEING OFF AND ON ONLY. — Zahra

Solution: Hi Zahra. If your phone keeps rebooting on its own, it may a battery problem as well. Try to do the basic software troubleshooting we recommend for Sultan above first. If battery recalibration and factory reset will not fix the random reboot issue, contact Samsung for repair or replacement.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 4 keeps rebooting on its own during the initial setup process

My Note 3 started having serious problems with making and receiving calls, so my husband bought me a Note 4 (my Note 3 had water damage from about a year ago). I used my SIM card from my old Note 3, started the setup process, but it died 3 times during the setup. It would show 0% battery, but as soon as I plugged it up, it was back up to 98%. I was able to finish the setup with it plugged up, only for it to continue to power down every time I tried to use it. I tried putting it in safe mode and a factory reset. When it restarted from the reset, it just kept cycling the Samsung screen until I had to take the battery out, put it back, plug it up, then power it back on. Could this be a problem with my SIM card? Can you please help with this issue, I’m at a loss. — BREANNA

Solution: Hi BREANNA. Is your Note 4 brand new or not? If it’s not, it’s highly possible that your husband may have purchased a damaged or malfunctioning device. Because you have no way of knowing the history of the device from its previous owner, you can save yourself from hassle by having it replaced or refunded. The fact that it’s already problematic this early is not a good sign and clearly an indication of a bad device. As far as troubleshooting an issue like this is concerned, your options are limited to doing a master reset only. If that won’t fix the random reboot issue, you can assume that there’s a hardware fault behind it.

If the phone was purchased brand new and came with its original Samsung packaging, have it replaced by the store immediately.

Problem #6: Galaxy Note 4 voice call not working properly after restricting background data

Hello I have a Galaxy Note 4 and I was messing around with the restricting background data running options in some of my apps and all the sudden my phone started malfunctioning. Now in order to make an outgoing phone call I have to turn the phone off, go into the contacts and make call. Once I make that call I can’t make anymore it will acknowledge the attempt and then reset not make the phone call so I have to turn my phone off do a restart to make one successful phone call. then I start experiencing not hearing the person when they call them please help if possible thank you. Sincerely. — Wylie

Solution: Hi Wylie. If you lost track of the things you modified in your phone, the best thing to do is to factory reset to return everything to their defaults. Here’s how to do that:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Launch Settings and scroll to ‘User and Backup’ section.
  3. Tap Backup and reset.
  4. If you want, you can tick the checkboxes next to Automatic restore and Back up my data.
  5. Tap Factory data reset.
  6. Touch Reset device.
  7. You may be asked to enter your PIN or Password.
  8. Tap Continue and then Delete all.

Factory reset will erase everything in the phone’s internal storage device so ensure that you back important files up before you do it.

  1. With regard to #4, I was having the same issue. I took it to an in-store Samsung rep, who determined that the Samsung microSD card was bad. I replaced that under warranty, and all was fine.
