Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge no longer charges after the Android 7.1 Nougat update [Troubleshooting Guide]

Charging is essential to any smartphone especially to battery intensive devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which has recently been updated to Android 7.1 Nougat. While many have been anticipating for the said update due to the fact that it brings a lot of improvements on performance and security not to mention a total overhaul in its user interface, it seems that some owners have been frustrated as the update seemed to have ruined their devices.

In this post, I will tackle the issue involving a Galaxy S7 Edge unit that has recently been updated to Nougat but stopped charging shortly after that. Many would wonder if the firmware did ruin the phone’s capability to charge and it’s logical to think so considering the problem started after a new firmware got installed but the thing is we really won’t know if we never tried troubleshooting. We would have to rule out one possibility after another to come to a point where we can say that this problem is due to this or that. Read on to learn how to troubleshoot your phone that stopped charging after a firmware update.

Troubleshooting Galaxy S7 Edge that doesn’t charge after Nougat update

In this article, we will try to troubleshoot your device to make it charge again without any help from a technician to save from all the trouble of explaining what happened and what you did that resulted to this issue. Now, to begin our troubleshooting, go through practical steps below…

Step 1: Use a wireless charger to know if the phone is still capable of charging

This is one of the advantages of owning one of the newest Android devices in the market today, you have another charging option in case the other failed. So, if possible, try to use a wireless charger to know if the device can still charge normally especially if the battery is running out. It’s impossible to troubleshoot if the phone won’t power on due to a low battery.

If your device charges wirelessly, at least, you know that its firmware actually allows charging and that the battery still accepts current from the charger. So we can proceed with ease with our troubleshooting knowing it’s only the wired charging that doesn’t work. But please allow your phone to charge until the battery is full so that we can be sure that it’s capable of replenishing its battery until it’s full.

On the other hand, if the phone doesn’t charge wirelessly, we can still proceed with our troubleshooting but as early as now we can already say that there really is something wrong with the firmware especially if you know that the phone was working fine prior to the update.

Step 2: Use a different wired charger to know immediately if it’s a charger problem

If the phone charges fine with the wireless charger, then it’s practical to just use a different wired charger to check if the issue is with the phone or with the charger itself, that is if you have a spare charger. Even a third-party charger that has the same specs as with the original will do.

However, if it’s not possible to use a different charger, then try to use a computer to determine if the phone responds to it. Computers don’t give out the same power as with the original charger but you could, at least, tell if the phone responds when it detects electric current flowing through its circuits. Just plug the cable to your computer’s USB port and look at the screen if the charging icon shows. If it does, then the phone actually acknowledges that it’s receiving electric current from your computer. Apparently, it’s a charger problem and buying a new one will be your best choice.

If, however, the phone doesn’t recognize electric current from the computer, it’s still possible that the problem is with the connection and the next step may take care of that.

Step 3: Physically check the charger, cable and your phone’s charging port

Try to see if something is blocking or corroding the port on your charger, if there is, then get rid of it by fishing it out or blasting compressed air. In case of bent pins, you can try straightening them up using a pair of tweezers. After making sure there’s no problem with the charger, try to check the cable. Run your fingers through from end to end and try to feel if there are lumps or breaks. Any irregularity would been the cable is damaged and no longer conducts electricity. Also, check both ends for debris, lint, corrosion or bent pins and use the same technique as above to make sure they work when connected.

After checking the charger and the cable, check the charging port of your phone. Also look for the same thing and use the same technique if possible in cleaning it out. If you’ve gotten something out from any of those ports, then try to charge your phone again to know it works this time and if still no, then move on to the next step.

Step 4: Try to boot up your phone in safe mode

This is for us to know if your third-party apps or those you downloaded and installed from Play Store or sideloaded have something to do with the problem. Booting in safe mode temporarily disables all third-party apps and assuming that the problem is caused by one of those apps, the device should charge properly when in diagnostic state. Here’s how you boot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Once the phone has successfully booted up, try plugging in the charger and connect your phone to see if it charges. If yes, then find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it. Of course, that’s easier said than done so if you have a hundred of apps, then it’s better that you just backup your files and data and then factory reset your phone.

Step 5: Turn off your phone and try to charge it

I don’t know if you’ve already tried this method but I suggest you do this just to know how the phone behaves. Normally, if the charger is fine and that proper contact is made, the phone will display the usual charging icon and the LED indicator will be lit up. If none of these signs show, then there must be something wrong with the circuit that leads to the power IC and to the battery. At this point, you need a technician to assess if the problem can still be fixed or not, although if I were the technician to handle this case, I will re-flash the firmware to see if that works and to ultimately rule out the possibility of a firmware problem.

However, if one the signs shows up like the LED lights up but the charging icon does not or the other way, then there’s still a chance that it’s a firmware problem. The next steps might help.

Step 6: Delete the system cache

We are going to troubleshoot the firmware but let’s try out a procedure that may save you from a lot of trouble if it’s successful. Wiping the cache partition is as effective as the reset especially if the problem started after a firmware update. Here’s how you do it…

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If the phone still won’t charge after this, then try to reset your device.

Step 7: Backup your files and data and reset your phone

We are at the point where we have to rule out the possibility that this problem is really an issue with the firmware. It comes at the end because it entails a lot of work as you will have to backup your files and data that you don’t want to lose. After the reset, you will have to restore them back to your phone, that’s why it tedious work.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If the problem still persists, then you need a technician to take care of the problem for you as it’s beyond your grasp.

  1. I powered down my phone and the charger works fine. I had already tried other chargers (with phone on) and they work fine. The Samsung fast charger that came with the phone worked yesterday on my phone before I upgraded to Nouget. It still works fine on my roommates Samsung Galaxy S7Edge that has not been upgraded.

    Can I fix this problem or do I need to purchase another fast charger?

  2. I tried all the steps but nothing worked. After I update thephone ran fine with the exception of one crash. Couple of hours after while using the phone it shut down ( my battery was 98 % ) and never came back on. It refuses to charge nor does any of the solutions you suggested work. The samsung logo does not show up nor do any of the lights come on. Please help im stuck.
