Samsung Galaxy S5 Home Button Not Working After Marshmallow Update Issue & Other Related Problems

Those who have updated their phone to the latest software version are generally pleased with the results however there are also some who are having issues with it which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 home button not working after Marshmallow update issue & other related problems.

S5 Home Button Not Working After Marshmallow Update

Problem: Samsung galaxy s5 did an update to Marshmallow 6 automatically on 1/28/17 and now I have no use of the home button or the button to delete all opened apps.  I do not have a rooted phone and all the apps are currently up to date.  How can I get the home button to work?  Otherwise I have a worthless phone?  If I reboot the phone the back button works for a short period of time and then it quits.  Help needed ASAP or I will jump ship to iPhone….Argh

Solution: This particular issue not only affects this model but other models as well that have done the Marshmallow update. One popular fix for this is to check if you have an Exchange/Activesync account set up on your phone. If you have then the security policy of the account could be preventing the Home from working. You could try removing the account to verify if this is what’s happening right now.  If this doesn’t fix the problem then perform the following troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Check for another software update that could be available for your phone. As far as I know this issue has already been fixed with an update. If you don’t see any update then try connecting your phone to a computer with Kies running. You will be prompted to update your device if an new update is available.
  • Try starting your phone in Safe Mode. If the issue doesn’t occur in this mode then it could be caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should consider flashing your phone with an updated official firmware version.

S5 On Straight Talk No Software Update

Problem: hi, I have a new Samsung S5 purchased from StraighTalk which uses Verizon towers.  It is model SM-S902L.  The phone does not say there is an update.  I have tried Kies, Kies 3 and SmartSwitch and none of these programs tell me there is an available update.  How can I update the software on this phone to 6.01? Thanks

Related Problem: My Samsung Galaxy S5 is running on Android version 4.4.2 KitKat, which I know is not current. It is a Straigh Talk phone. KitKat is what the phone came with when I bought it last year, when I go to system updates it believes it is up to date. I downloaded SmartSwitch to check it and it said the same thing, so I downloaded Kies 3 thinking this would do it, but no it also said it was up to date. I know it does not have to be updated per say, but it would be nice to have it be up to date, at this point it is just frustrating

Solution: Straight Talk isn’t really known for releasing software updates to their phones. There are also a couple of requirements that your phone must meet in order for it to get updates which are listed below.

  • If your phone is an unlocked device then it should be running on it original network for it to be able to get the update.
  • The phone should not be rooted.
  • The phone should not be running on a custom software.

If your phone meets the requirements listed above and it is still not getting updates then try doing a factory reset then check for the update again.

You should also consider manually flashing the update to your phone. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular forums online.

S5 Will Not Update To Marshmallow

Problem: I own a Samsung Galaxy S5 and I have not been able to update it to Marshmellow. My carrier is AT&T. I go to Settings, tap About Device, tap Software Updates, and then tap Check for Updates. The next screen that appears says, “Software update process will not delete any personal data on your phone. Check the AT&T server for new software update?” I tap OK and it says, “Current software is up to date.” It is clear on my phone that I do not have the latest update. My friends have the same phone but different carriers. And we all have different versions of the update. Please help me! I just want my phone to be up to date.

Solution: There are several conditions that your phone must meet in order for it to get the update.

  • Your phone should be running on its original network. This applies for unlocked phones.
  • Your phone must not be rooted.
  • Your phone must be not be running on a custom software.

If your phone meets the conditions listed above and it still isn’t getting updates then try connecting your phone to a computer with Kies running then let the software update your phone.

You can also backup your phone data then do a factory reset before checking for the update.

S5 Error Occurred With The Fingerprint Scanner

Problem: When I try to register fingerprints the the Finger Scanner I get an error ” An error has occurred with the fingerprint scanner. If this message appears repeatedly, restart your device” I have restarted it,  pulled the battery out for 30 min,  started in safe mode and then back to regular operation and also have wiped the cache clear.  Still no luck.

Solution: What you should do first in this case is to try to clear the cache and data of the fingerprint app. This process deletes the temporary data of the app which could be causing the problem. I f the issue persists then I suggest that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 FRP Bypass Using OTG Cable

Problem: I bought a Samsung galaxy s5 neo and it was factory reset before I bought it off line and tried hooking up the otg cable with the google bypass file on a usb drive the use drive was formatted to fat32 and it wont boot up to the usb and when I boot it up to try without it I unplug the internet when it says updating and can get to the time and day the video says to highlight any word and hit send and when I do it says it won’t send for security reasons and try to make an account on google and it says cannot set up for security reasons please help

Solution: The way I understand this issue is that the phone has its factory reset protection enabled and you are trying to bypass this using the OTG cable. Since this process doesn’t work then the best way to deal with this is to ask the previous owner the details of the last Google account that was used in the phone before the factory reset was performed.
