How to connect Galaxy Note 5 to TV via Quick Connect, other issues

Problem #1: Galaxy Note 5 won’t charge when battery level reaches 22%

I have been using my Note 5 for about a year. Recently i am facing problem with battery performance/charging. At the beginning of the problem, the phone powered off when it reached 15%. Now it doesn’t charge beyond 22% (if i do nothing and let it keep charging) whether it is powered off or on. If initially it was charging while the phone was powered on and once it reaches 22%, and i power off it shows 95%/96% charged. And if it was charging while the phone is powered off and reaches 22% and then i power on it shows 95%/96% charged. When i use the phone and the charge reaches around 60%, it shuts down. Is it a battery problem? Do i need to replace it? Or is it related to OS? If i need to purchase a battery where can I buy it? — Tanvir

Solution: Hi Tanvir. It’s most probably a battery issue. Before you commit in getting a new battery or phone, we recommend that you recalibrate the battery first. If that won’t change anything, you can then factory reset the phone to check if it’s just a software-level glitch.

To recalibrate the battery, follow these steps:

  • Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
  • Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
  • Charge the phone without turning it back on.
  • Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
  • Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
  • If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
  • Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
  • Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
  • Repeat the cycle once.

In order to factory reset your Note 5, kindly do the steps below. Keep in mind that factory reset will wipe everything including photos, videos, etc. Make sure that you back them up before doing a factory reset.

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  • Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  • Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  • The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  • Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  • The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.

If both these solutions won’t work, have the hardware checked so it can be determined if the battery needs replacement or not.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note 5 storage shrunk to 8GB after flashing

Hey there, so here’s my issue. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Jt’s a Sprint phone but has been unlocked for use with T-Mobile. I was locked out of Snapchat and downloaded an app called Supersu because I read somewhere you needed this app to correct the Snapchat oh no login failed message. In any event, in doing so my phone went into brick mode and I downloaded stock and installed using Odin and got my phone up and running again. The only problem is I went from a 32GB phone to an 8GB phone with no storage space. Sigh. I have searched high and low for a way to resolve this issue. Could you offer any suggestions? Thanks so much. — Patricia

Solution: Hi Patricia. In order to understand your situation fully, we need more information than what you’re providing here. If we are not mistaken, what you’re trying to say is that your phone’s total storage has shrunk to 8GB after flashing. In that case, try to reinstall the factory version firmware to restore all memory partitions to their default size. Factory version firmware is the original Android version when you first unboxed your phone. Some Note 5s shipped with a Android Lollipop a year ago so if flashing Android Marshmallow won’t fix the problem, try Android Lollipop.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 5 cannot be unlocked

I have tried everything! We terminated an employee. He wiped the device before he gave it back. I have reached out to him, but he will not help. We have over 50 smart phones with Verizon. I would really like to repurpose this device for another employee. Is there any new way to unlock this phone? I tried your method, and it does not pop up anything, I have tried with realterm as per another article, still no success. can you help? I think the device is running nougat. Thank you. — Austin

Solution: Hi Austin. Factory Reset Protection feature was added for Samsung devices running Android Lollipop and up over a year ago. This means that FRP-protected phones can only be unlocked by entering the registered Google account credentials. If you don’t have those, the phone has basically become an expensive paperweight.

At this time, we are not aware of any hack that can unlock an FRP protected phone so you’re out of luck.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 5 music player app can’t access music files

Mr. Android Guy, Hope you can. I’m having an issue accessing my music files through my normal music player that came with the phone. Not sure when it happened. Here’s what’s going on: When I open my music player it shows no music. I installed an SD card several months ago and moved most of my songs to it. Everything has been working fine up until the other day I tried to use the player and there was no music. I tried moving the music back to device storage and  the music does show up on player and it works as it should. In an attempt to free up space on my device storage I have periodically relocated files and other data and apps to SD card. It’s unfortunate I didn’t monitor the Samsung music play app after each move  I made to SD card. at least then I would have a clue on what I did to create this issue. The Micro SD card is a Samsung 32 GB model # MB-MP32DA/AM EVO class 10. Thank You. — Doug

Solution: Hi Doug. Since the problem involves the SD card, your first move is to make sure that the said card works. Try to reformat it using your phone and move some music files to it before attempting to play them in the app.

If that won’t fix the problem, the next thing that you want to do is to wipe the cache and data of the music player. Here’s how:

  • Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  • Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
  • Once in there, click on an application.
  • You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  • You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

Should the issue persists, factory reset the phone. Refer to the steps above on how to do it.

Problem #5: Water-damaged Galaxy Note 5 screen is unresponsive

My Samsung Galaxy Note 5 was near my wash basin and it got wet. It was acting on its own for a few hours until I managed to turn off my phone. Everything else was okay. I needed my password to log into my phone, but I realized parts of my screen was unresponsive(The right, the bottom and parts in the middle.), So I can”t use my phone now. What do I do now?        — Jayden

Solution: Hi Jayden. The Galaxy Note 5 does not have water-resistance protection so if the screen started acting up after the phone got wet, it’s safe to assume that water must have find its way into the internal components. In an ideal situation, you are supposed to do immediate “first aid” such as turning off the phone, removing the battery, and drying the motherboard in rice or similar material for weeks (not hours or days!). The main aim is to ensure that there’s no power in the system to avoid shorting components. Any shorted component in the motherboard can cause permanent damage. (And if you don’t know, motherboard replacement is an expensive repair job and does not always fix other problems.) The longer the battery remains connected to a wet motherboard, the higher the chance of causing severe damage to other components. That said, what you need to do right now is turn the phone off, send it to Samsung or any service center so it can be cleaned and dried, and hope the everything will be okay after that. The best outcome that you can hope for right now is that the water damage is only isolated to the screen assembly. Otherwise, you are better off getting a phone replacement.

A wet motherboard runs a high risk of some components developing corrosion in the long run (that’s why everything must be thoroughly cleaned and dried). Corrosion in the metallic contacts can develop for weeks so you will not immediately see its negative results. Once corrosion sets in, it’s an irreversible process so it’s just a matter of time before your phone succumbs to its death.

Problem #6: How to connect Galaxy Note 5 to TV via Quick Connect

Please help. I don’t have wifi available but do have 4G data on my Note 5 Samsung phone. I also have a brand new Samsung TV. I cannot figure out screen mirroring using data. Do I need a cable to plug into the TV and phone to connect the two devices?? Please let me know.

Also, I’m not sure if Marshmallow is the version of my device but it is a current Note 5. — Danwrawls

Solution: Hi Danwrawls. If you want to connect your Galaxy Note 5 to a TV (we’re assuming you have a smart TV here), you can use the Quick Connect feature in your phone. You cannot use mobile data for screen mirroring. Quick Connect will allow you to share the phone’s screen, send music, videos, photos, etc. This feature will use whatever available type of connection (Bluetooth feature, Wi-Fi Direct, or Screen Mirroring) there is depending on the type of content being shared.

To share content using Quick Connect, follow these steps:

    1. To access Quick connect from any menu or application, open the Notification Panel by swiping from the top of the screen to the bottom.
    2. Touch Quick connect in the Quick Settings Panel or Notification Panel. If it is not available by default, touch EDIT or  to access Quick connect.
    3. Choose to make your device Always visible or visible Only when Quick connect turned on.
    4. Touch TURN ON QUICK CONNECT.
    5. If available, turn on Quick connect on the device you are connecting to.
    6. A list of nearby devices will display. Touch the name of the device you want to connect to.
    7. Touch Share content to send a contact or other content to “Galaxy Note 5.” Depending on the type of device you are connecting to, more options may be available.
    8. Touch the type of content you want to share. For this example, touch Contacts.
    9. Mark the checkboxes for the contacts you want to share and touch DONE.
    10. The device you are sharing with will be asked to CONNECT to receive the files. Touch CANCEL to reject the file sharing.
    11. After the files have been accepted and downloaded, open the Notification Panel by swiping from the top of the screen to the bottom.
    12. Touch the File received notification, and follow the on-screen instructions for saving the content to your device.

To play content on a TV, follow these steps:

    1. Turn on the TV or monitor.
    2. Open the Notification Panel by swiping from the top of the screen to the bottom.
    3. Touch Quick connect in the Quick Settings Panel or Notification Panel. If it is not available by default, touch EDIT or  to access Quick connect.
    4. Touch the name of your TV or monitor in the list of nearby devices that displays.
    5. Choose Play/view content to display content from your device on the screen, or choose Start Screen Mirroring to display your device screen on the TV or monitor.
    6. If you choose Play/view content, select the type of content you want to display on the TV or monitor. Select Image, Video, or Audio.
    7. Mark the checkboxes on the content you want to display and touch DONE.
    8. The first time you connect your mobile device to a TV or monitor, select Allow on the screen to give it access to your mobile device.
    9. Your content will display on the screen. You can control playback from your mobile device.

 

If the device you want to connect to such as your TV does not automatically display in the nearby devices list, follow these steps:

    1. Make sure the device you want to connect to is turned on and the screen is awake.
    2. Turn on Quick connect from the Notification Panel.
    3. Make sure the device you are connecting to has the Bluetooth feature turned on and the Bluetooth visibility set to be visible to all nearby devices.
    4. Make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
