#Twitter is one of the most widely used social media platforms in the world and a popular place for celebrities and influential people to voice their opinion. It’s not up there with Facebook in terms of revenues or popularity but is still a relevant name in social media. One of the primary criticisms of the platform has been that it’s prone to a lot of abuse given its open nature. We recently saw Actress/Comedian Leslie Jones leaving Twitter following abuse by a couple of racist users.
In order to fight this menace, Twitter is now implementing a new online tool which allows users to block out or mute tweets which have abusive words in them. Twitter feels that the openness of the platform will not be questioned with this move and that the users cannot cross certain boundaries, mostly pertaining to gender, race or religion.
Twitter will also make it easier for users to report certain comments for abuse. Further, the company claims that its teams have been retrained to better understand how online abuse works. This is certainly a step in the right direction and we hope it helps curb the abuse that spreads around on the platform.
