Samsung Galaxy S5 Screen Shutting Off Issue & Other Related Problems

One of the best features of the #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 is its 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display. While its resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels isn’t the best today it was one of the best two years ago. As a former flagship model this phone is great to use for various multimedia tasks as images on the screen appear vivid and lifelike. There are however instances when certain screen related issues can occur on this device which we will tackle today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will address the Galaxy S5 screen shutting off issue & other related problems.

S5 Screen Shutting Off

Problem: Hello, I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5,  I have been having the following issue since the Marshmallow update.  Originally, I thought the phone was shutting down, but then I noticed the green light would still flash so now I think the screen is just shutting off.  This happens randomly, (setting the phone on a table, when I am on the phone, when I hang up…).  I have to remove the battery to get it back to being operational.  this happens five to twenty times a day.

Solution: What you need to do first in this case is to check for any possible software glitches that could be causing this problem by  following the troubleshooting steps listed below. Check if the issue still occurs after performing each step and move to the next step if the problem remains.

  • Check if an app you installed in your phone is causing the problem by starting your device in Safe Mode. When the phone is working in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are prevented from running. If the issue doesn’t occur in this mode then it could be caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. This will erase the cached data of the phone which if corrupt can cause this issue.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked as this could already be caused by a faulty display assembly.

S5 Screen Is Black After Phone Got Water Damaged

Problem: Hi, my Samsung Galaxy S5 has been water-damaged for about 2 months now. I had put it in a bag of rice for about 3 days nothing happened, I then went to repair centres and they were charging me a very huge price, of how much the phone actually costs. Which i cannot afford to do. What do you think is the problem, is it a loose cable between the motherboard, has anything been shorted. Because everything works except the screen is black. The led light and sound is working. even the touch is, except the screen is black for some reason. I will appreciate any advice and help, thanks

Solution: If everything in your phone is working except the display then the water might have damaged the display assembly, display controller circuit located in the motherboard, the display connector wire, or a combination of the three. Your best option right now is to have the phone repaired if you have important data that you would like to access that’s stored in it. If you don’t have any important data in the device and fixing the phone will cost a lot then you should just consider getting a new phone.

S5 Screen Activates When Email Is Received

Problem: i, I have had this phone almost 2 years. All of a sudden, yesterday my screen comes on for a second every time a new e mail is delivered.  It is distracting and a battery drain I tried to get it to stop by using an app called screen notification, but the phone overrides those settings and continues to light up every time a new e mail is delivered.  This just started yesterday.  The Samsung people said this is normal… but by hasn’t it happened for the past 2 years. I did not install any new apps, except to try to fix the problem. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Solution: If your phone is running on the latest software update then you can change the way the app notifications in your phone works. Go to Settings then Sound & Notifications. Tap on App Notifications from here Click on the email app then you can set it to Do not Show Notification at all. The disadvantage to this is that you won’t get any sound notifications for your email.

S5 Screen Is Black After Phone Fell

Problem: My phone (Samsung S5) fell, and all looked good afterwards for a few hours.  Then the screen started to get purple lines on it that grew.  As the purple lines grew wider the center of the lines turned to black, and after a few more hours the screen was completely black.  Other than the display the phone still seems to work.  Is there anything that can be done to save the phone or is it a lost cause? I tried submitting without answering the Android version question, but it would not let me, so I just picked one from the list.  I really have no idea what the Android version is.

Solution: It looks like the display assembly has been damaged by the drop. You can however try to troubleshoot this by starting the phone in recovery mode. If the screen works in this mode then it’s possible that the issue could be caused by a software glitch. You will then have to perform a factory reset in this mode. Take note that the reset will delete your phone data so only do this if you have a backup copy of your phone data.

If the phone screen is still black even in recovery mode then there’s a possibility that the display has been damaged. You will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked if this is the case.

S5 Screen Flickering

Problem: Hello! For several months, my phone (Samsung S5) has been flickering.  At first, if I set the screen to the brightest level, it would lessen.  It has progressively gotten worse. Now, it will take several minutes to get it to respond to coming on.  The screen stays mostly black and will flash each time.  As I continue to attempt to make it come on, it will finally show the screen. Thanks for any help!

Related Problem: Lately my phone keeps flickering and when on complete dim it goes a greeny colour while flickering. Also my screen takes ages to come on when it’s been on screen lock. I have no idea what’s wrong with it, it’s come on all of a sudden.

Solution: Because this phone uses a Super AMOLED display it will tend to flicker at low brightness settings. You should try to turn of the auto brightness setting of the phone then manually increase the brightness level. In most case the flickering will stop.

If your phone still flickers then perform the following troubleshooting steps listed below. Check if the issue still occurs after performing a step then move to the next one if it still does.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode. If the issue doesn’t occur in this mode then there’s a chance that it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

If the issue still occurs then I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center.
