Samsung Galaxy S5 Freezes, Crashes, Works Slow Issue

Today, we now have several phone models available in the market with much more powerful processors and large RAMs that are able to handle the most demanding tasks with ease. The S5 can also handle most of the new apps available in the Google Play store with ease however there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5  freezes, crashes, works slow issue.

S5 Freezes Becomes Hot

Problem: Hi, I have an S5 and while using is last evening, the phone froze and the board became very hot. I removed the battery and let it sit for about an hour. After that time, I turned the phone on and it worked well. But then I heard a small sizzle noise, the board became hot and the phone froze. This was after being on and functioning for about an hour and a half. I removed the battery again and left it out overnight. The phone turns on, but it freezes and there is a fuzzy line that appears across the screen. I recently upgraded the software, but I’m not sure what the most recent update is called. I haven’t been able to back it up bc it won’t stay on, unfrozen long enough for me to do it. What can I do?

Solution: A phone freezing and becoming hot cold mean that there is a process running that’s stuck and causing the processor to work even when it’s not supposed to work. This will generate heat which could oftentimes become too hot. What you should do in this case is to eliminate any software related issues that could be causing this problem first by doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset as it will be erased in the process. Once the reset is complete do not install anything in your phone yet. If your phone has a microSD card you should remove it first.

Try to check if the issue still occurs. If it does then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component. I suggest that you have this checked at a service center.

S5 Apps Crashes

Problem: I have samsung galaxy s5 16gig…. today my Photo gallery, snapchat, facebook apps crashes as soon as I open them. When trying to access from the history/bookmarks page i Cant view my downloads either. I also can’t add new apps, says downloading but stay at 0% and just stays at that only. Also can’t attach pictures to a text message or view pictures that have been screenshot. I tried the clear cache partition, and it did not fix any issues. Thanks in advance.

Solution: Try checking first if an app you installed is causing this problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone operates in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are prevented from running. Try to check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Stuck In Android Is Upgrading Screen

Problem: I was updating the latest software today (9-23-16) ,,, It was going pretty smooth but phone has been stuck on a screen that  says…ANDROID IS UPGRADING….Finishing boot. it has been doing this now for about 2.5 hours , with a white bar beneath that is white…I was thinking the bar was some kind of meter that was reading the progress of  my upgrading? Not sure what to do, Not sure how long this upgrade is suppose to take? would like a little help. Thanks very much.

Solution: If your phone is stuck in the Android is upgrading screen then what you should do first is to turn off the phone then remove its battery and microSD card ( if one is installed). Next, press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This will discharge the phone circuit and clear out its RAM. Reinsert just the battery then turn on the phone. If you are still experiencing the same issue then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.
  • Start the phone in recovery mode then do a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to have a backup copy before proceeding with this.

S5 Not Charging Not Booting Up

Problem: My Samsung Galaxy S5 phone has died and it’s neither charging nor booting up…. Need you wisdom to get it up as it’s out of warranty (2.5 years old now) so not sure if I will get any support. What Happened – I was running low on the battery but had to take a call (audio meeting) which I joined…The phone worked perfectly but then it automatically turned off (I think battery was low or completely discharged) but by this time I reached home and plugged the phone for charging…. And started it since had to make a quick call…..I called using the phone but it again got turned off …..So tried to turn on again to at least get the number so I can call using other phone…..but it turned off again…..and then it really never came up was just restarting and turning off…. I changed the charging plug thinking it may be problem it with (but there was no problem with the plug)…but when I plugged it at other place the phone showed black screen and green Android man on with “Downloading” mentioned at the bottom of the screen and also said “do not turn off”…….The screen was like that for ~2 mins and then it turned off by it self…..Now it’s neither booting up nor charging so not sure what to do… Pl. help…

Solution: Start the troubleshooting by getting a new battery. Sometimes if the battery is already to weak to hold a charge the phone will be having this issue. Try to check if the problem still occurs with the new battery installed. If the issue still occurs then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Charge the phone for at least 20 minutes. It’s best if you use a different charging cord and wall charger from what you are originally using.
  • Start the phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition.
  • Start the phone in recovery mode then do a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

S5 Smart Stay Keeps Turning On

Problem: Hi, admittedly I am trying to hold onto my S5 as long as possible. It has thus far, been my favorite phone. Recently, after never having tried it, I tried turning on the Smart Stay feature in my display settings, which supposedly keeps the screen on as long as you’re looking at your phone. Along with that feature comes the “eye” icon right next to the LED icon at the very top of my screen. Even though I have turned off the Smart Stay feature, the eye icon keeps popping up and when it is visible my phone freezes. Any help? It seems to be worse whenever I’m trying to search the internet, but isn’t solely then. It really makes me feel like someone is other spying on me, or tracking my internet movement…

Solution: Is your phone running on Android Marshmallow? Several owners of this model have reported this same issue with the Marshmallow software installed in their phone. This appears to be a bug in the software which should be fixed with an update. In the meantime you can temporarily fix the problem by turn off the auto screen rotation setting of your phone.
