S5 Camera Stops Focusing

Problem: Hi guys, I’m having an issue with my rear camera on my samsung galaxy 5. I’ve only had the phone (brand new) for about 5, 6 weeks and it’s been great until today when the camera just stopped focusing. It seems locked onto about 10cm/4″ focal range and won’t move, the little white circle does about half a rotation and vanishes before it focuses. I’ve done the soft reset, emptied the cache, booted in safe mode, slapped it about, checked the lens and removed the little bit of plastic film that came with the phone over the lens area, cleared the cache partition, popped the battery out for 15 min, I’ve done everything EXCEPT factory reset which I”m trying to avoid. Do I give up and assume hardware issue at this point?

Solution: Try installing a third party camera app and check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then you might have to do a factory reset. Just make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

If the issue still occurs even when using a third party camera app then this could already be a hardware related problem possibly caused by a failing focusing mechanism of the camera module. You should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked if this is the case.

S5 Camera Won’t Take Clear Pictures

Problem: Hi there! The camera, just recently, won’t take clear pictures. Very blurry. Almost like there’s a reflection. It used to take better pics than my daughters iPhone 6. Only the front camera seems to be a problem. I’ve cleaned it. Done a soft reset. Messed with all the settings. And restarted in safe mode….ahhhhhh help!!

Solution: Does your phone have a screen protector installed? If it has then this could be interfering with the ability of the front camera to focus properly. Try removing the screen protector then check if the issue gets fixed.

If the phone does not have a screen protector installed or if the problem still persists even after removing the screen protector then you should follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Clear the cache and data of the camera app.
  • Check if the issue occurs when your phone is started in Safe Mode. if it doesn’t occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

If the above steps don’t fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

S5 Unknown Error Has Occurred When Using Camera

Problem: Everytime i try to take a picture my phone acts like it’s taking a picture and then a little window pops up that says “an unknown error has occurred” and the camera closes. It doesn’t actually take a photo. I’ve tried restarting it and taking the battery out but it continues to do it every time. This has been going on for 10 days.

Solution: You should first check if some corrupt data in the camera app is causing this problem by clearing the cache and data of the camera app.I also suggest to remove the microSD card if your phone has one then verify if the issue still occurs. If it does then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone works in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. This is a great way to check if a downloaded app is causing the problem. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode. This deletes the cached system data which might be causing this problem.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Camera Photos Video Don’t Open

Problem: I’ve had my Galaxy S5 for nearly three years and it has had very few problems. Suddenly any photos or videos I take with the phone display a black screen in the thumbnail view and then eventually completely disappear from the phone. When I try to play the videos it says the data for the videos is incorrect. I can play any previously taken videos (before today) or any downloaded videos. And I can see and access all previously taken photos. I have tried a soft reset several times; pulled the battery; deleted the cache. I have not tried a complete factory reset.

Solution: Are the photos and videos stored in the microSD card? If they are then the card might be corrupt resulting in this issue. Try removing this card then take another photo or video. Check if you can open the photo/ video file.

If your phone doesn’t have a microSD card installed then you should do the following troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode. Check if you can access the photos and videos in this mode. If you can then the problem is most likely caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Pictures In Memory Card Are Black

Problem: My memory card is saving my pictures black saying no image. I have previously moved my pictures from device due to low memory to memory card and now all 700 are black with no image. I read ur piece on corrupted files and clear cache now they are saving fine but I have no longer got my 700 imaged. How can these be saved? Please help

Solution: This kind of issue usually occurs when the photos stored in the microSD card become corrupted. You can try to recover these files by using a data recovery software ( example is Recuva which runs on computers). Take note though that there’s no assurance that the corrupted files can be totally recovered but it’s worth a shot to try it.

S5 Camera Folder Missing

Problem: All my pics in the “Camera” folder of Gallery are suddenly gone; however, the pics in other folders of Gallery are fine. I did not move, hide or delete anything. I do not have an SD card or cloud backup. I downloaded Quick Pic then selected “unhide” but the “Camera” folder did not appear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Solution: You can try connecting the phone using a USB cord to your computer. Once the phone is detected try to check if you are able to view the contents of Camera folder of your phone using the file explorer program of the computer. If the contents can’t be found then there’s a possibility that they could have been deleted.
