While it concerns the Messages app, you may still be able to receive text messages but once you view or read them, the app might freeze or crash and show this error message. If you own this phone and you’re currently bugged by this error message, then this is what you need to do:
Step 1: Try rebooting your Galaxy Note 5
While this problem happens every now and then, the first thing you should do the first time it shows up is to restart your phone. It’s the most basic of all troubleshooting procedures and very easy to do not to mention it’s very effective in fixing minor or temporary app and firmware issues.
Reboot your phone and then open the Messages app. If the error still shows up, try rebooting your phone again and do the same. Should the problem persists, then the next step might help.
Step 2: Restart your phone into the Safe Mode
It is imperative you know if the cause of the problem is a third-party app or if it’s the Messages app that has issues. So, in this step, you need to restart your Note 5 in safe mode so you can isolate what the problem is. Booting in this mode will temporarily disable all third-party apps leaving pre-installed ones running. So if the error doesn’t show up when you open the Messages app in safe mode, then we can almost be certain a third-party app is causing a conflict that triggers the error. This is how you restart your device in safe mode:
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
- When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.
Step 3: Clear the cache and data of the Messages app
While the phone is in safe mode and if the error still pops up, then it’s time to reset the Messages settings. You may lose all your messages and preferences but it’s a necessary procedure and we need to rule out the possibility that it’s just a minor issue with the app. Here’s how you delete the cache and data of the Messages app:
- From any Home screen, tap Apps.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
- Swipe right to the ALL screen.
- Scroll to and tap Messages.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Tap Clear data, then OK.
After doing this, reboot your phone and then open the Messages app again to see if the error still pops up and if so, then the next step might help.
Step 4: Delete the system cache
If the problem occurred after an update, then the problem might have been caused by some corrupt caches. System caches get corrupted most of the time and when the current firmware uses them, issues like system crash and freezes may occur. So, in this step, try to boot your phone into the recovery mode and wipe the cache partition:
- Turn off your Galaxy Note 5.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
The Note 5 may take a little longer to reboot but once it’s up and ready, open the Messages app to see if the error still pops up and if so, you have no other choice but to do the next step.
Step 5: Backup your data and files and reset your phone
You’ve done everything as far as troubleshooting is concerned at this point. So, if the problem still occurs, then you need to backup your data and reset your phone. You may reset it through the Settings menu or use the external buttons.
This is how you reset it through the Settings menu:
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Find and tap the Settings icon.
- Under the ‘Personal’ section, find and tap Backup and reset.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Touch Reset device to proceed with the reset.
- Depending on the security lock you used, enter the PIN or password.
- Tap Continue.
- Touch Delete all to confirm your action.
And this is how you reset it through the Recovery Mode:
- Remove your Google account and disengage the screen locks to make sure you won’t trip the Factory Reset Protection (FRP).
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
