Samsung Galaxy S5 Intermittent Charging Issue & Other Power Related Problems

The #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 is a 2014 flagship model that’s still being used by a lot of people today. As of now it’s probably one of the last flagship devices that the South Korean giant has released that comes with a removable battery. This is in one way an advantage since phone owners will be able to easily replace the battery on their own instead of having it done at a service center. While this device has proven itself to be a worthy daily driver there are instances when certain issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 intermittent charging issue & other power related problems.

S5 Intermittent Charging Issue

Problem: Hello, I was hoping that you could help me out with some charging issues on my phone It is a Samsung Galaxy S5, and i just bought a new Samsung battery off of Ebay yesterday and i am starting to have some issues, my phone will not charge and if it does it will charge on and off really fast. Also sometimes whether it is charging or not it shows up with this warning, “You must download the app in order to control the amount of power shared. If you connect your device to another device with the Samsung Power Sharing Cable EP-SG900 without the app, the entire battery amount will be transferred to the other device Connect to Samsung apps and download the application”. when i press “OK” it sends me to the ‘Galaxy apps’ app to download power sharing If i press “Cancel” the warning goes away for at most two seconds then pops back up. Please contact me as soon as possible Thank you

Solution: There are several possible factors that can cause this particular problem. What you will want to do first is to make sure that the charging port is free of dirt or debris as this can usually interfere with the charging process. To do this you just have to use a can of compressed air to clean the port. Once the port is clean try to check if the issue still occurs. If it does then the next step is to isolate the charger. Try using another charging cord first as this cord gets easily damaged especially if it is constantly coiled or bent. Next, try using a different wall charger. You should also check if the issue occurs when your phone is charging via the computer USB port. If the issue doesn’t occur when the phone is charged this way then you should have the phone’s charging port checked.

Once you have verified that the charger isn’t causing the problem the next step is to check the phone. What you will want to do is to immediately check if a glitch in the phone software is causing this problem by doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

You should also check if the new battery that you got is causing this problem by replacing it.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Won’t Charge At All

Problem: Hello my name is Dawn. I am having a problem charging my phone all of a sudden. It charge very slow yesterday now won’t charge at all. I have done most of the troubleshooting issues.. I did have to reset my phone a month ago and lost everything can you help me on how to get my phone to charge. How do I know if I need a new port or a new battery? Please and Thank you hope to hear from you soon.

Solution: The first thing that you should do in this scenario is to verify if the charger is causing the problem. Try using a new charger, make sure to also use another charging cord. If the phone doesn’t charge with a wall charger then try checking if it charges via the computer USB port. If it does then your phone might have a damaged charging port in which case you should have this checked at a service center.

Once you have verified that the charger is not causing the problem it’s time to troubleshoot the phone. If you have another battery try using it in your device and see if it charger. Thisway you can check if your current battery is defective and causing the problem.

Finally, to check if the issue is caused by a software glitch I recommend that you backup your phone data and do a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center that’s capable of doing board level repairs.

S5 Only Charges When Phone Is Off After Update

Problem: I’m having trouble with the battery after the 6.0.1 update. My battery is only charging when the phone is off and starts draining when I turn it on even if it is plugged into charger. Side note the swipe feature for texting is lagging as well. If you have a solution for me I’d really appreciate it, thank you!

Solution: Since this issue occured right after a software update I highly recommend that you do a factory reset first. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset. What this reset does is it deletes any old software data that might still be present and is causing a conflict with the new software version. Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone just yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air. Make sure to remove any dirt or debris present in the port.
  • Try using a different charging cord and wall charger when charging your phone.
  • Try to check if the phone charges via your computer’s USB port. If it does then your phone might have a damaged charging port. Have this checked at a service center.
  • Try using a new battery.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

S5 Gets Hot Showing Snowy Screen

Problem: I tried to run overdue update for Samsung galaxy s5 last night – phone kind of crashed and went to a grey snowy screen it flashed to this twice then sometimes gave option to enter backup password but wouldn’t allow any digits to be typed. Phone also got hot. Eventually it let me in and I reset fingerprint scanner. Then tonight while surfing the web the same thing happened. I have tried removing battery and holding power key but this doesn’t solve it. When the snowy screen is on it gets hot and the buttons don’t do anything.

Solution: For this issue you should first check if the phone software is causing the problem by doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset. Once the reset is complete don’t install anything in your phone yet. If your phone has a microSD card then remove it temporarily. Check if the problem still occurs. If it does then this could possibly be caused by an internal component that has failed to work. I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Keeps On Rebooting When Not Connected To Charger

Problem: i’m having weird problems with my phone, it keep rebooting over and over, its just say samsung then reboot again, but when it is on the charger it work just fine and when you take it off the charger it reboot over and over again until you put the charger back in. the weird part is battery would say it’s at 100 percent when you plug it and unplug it. also i tried factory resetting it and that made thing worse, now it won’t go to the main screen

Solution: This issue might be caused by a faulty battery that doesn’t provide the correct power to the device anymore. Try using a new battery on your phone and see if this fixes the problem. If the issue still occurs do the following troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Take out the battery and microSD card ( if you have one installed). Press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This will discharge the phone circuit and clear out its RAM. Reinsert just the battery then check if the phone turns on.
  • Try to start the phone in recovery mode. If you are able to access this mode then I suggest that you do a factory reset from here. Take note that this will erase the data stored in your phone.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Doesn’t Turn On Unless Plugged In

Problem: Got this phone used and unlocked. Bought it a new battery cos the old was was crap, but it still does it. My phone will shut itself off, then not turn back on unless it’s plugged in. Is there any way you can help cos I’m at my wit’s end.

Solution: Since you already replaced the battery what you will want to do next is to check if a glitch in the phone software is causing this problem. Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete immediately check if the issue still occurs. If it does then the power IC of the phone might be defective. I suggest that you have this checked at a service center.

S5 Charge Incompatible

Problem: I have two issues. One is that when I type on mobile Chrome, it is extremely laggy or suddenly types the same word 3 or 4 times. The other issue is that my mom bought a 10 foot charger that said it was compatible with my Samsung Galaxy S5..but every time I try to charge my phone, it’ll charge for a few minutes before saying that it isn’t compatible. I don’t know what to do.

Solution: For the charging problem this could be caused by the charging cord that you are using. Try replacing this with another cord. It’s best if this cord is around a meter in length. You should also make sure that the charging port is free of any dirt or debris by cleaning it with a can of compressed air.

Regarding the issue that you have with Chrome try to clear the cache and data of this browser from the application manager first. If this doesn’t fix the problem then uninstall Chrome then install a fresh version from the Google Play Store.
