Galaxy Note 5 stuck in Note 5 logo screen after CF-Auto-Root procedure, other issues

Problem #1: Galaxy Note 5 fails to start after installing a game

Hi. I have only owned my new Android Samsung Galaxy Note 5 for about 4-5 months. it never gets turned off and is usually charged each night while I sleep. The phone has now 100% stopped working and cannot be charged. Initially it showed 0% battery power but when it is being charged a little light no longer shows. This has all happened over the evening when my 7 year old daughter had installed more ‘games.’ She said it occurred when she started “watching for free”. This was probably just a kids game invitation (my guess). It has just died! I am really worried as this is my only phone. Why has this happened? Do you think the battery has been totally drained and I need to buy a new one or does the battery just need removing and replacing or is it worse? I look forward to your thoughts. Many thanks. — Jen

Solution: Hi Jen. A full hardware check is necessary to identify whether or not this is just a battery-gone-wrong issue, or if it’s another else. That said, the only thing that you can try on your end is to see if you can boot the device in other modes. If your Note 5 will boot to another mode, the issue is more likely a software-related issue and not in hardware. Below are the things that you can try:

Boot in Recovery mode

  • Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode

  • Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  • Wait until the Download screen appears.
  • If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  • Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode

  • Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  • Press and hold the Power button.
  • Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  • Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  • Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  • The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

If you can’t turn the phone on to any of these modes, the most likely cause is hardware malfunction. Contact Samsung or your carrier so they can  a hardware check or replacement.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note 5 stuck in Note 5 logo screen after failed CF-Auto-Root procedure

Dear Sir: Good Day! I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Duos (SM-N9208) upgraded to Marshmallow. I decided to root the device using CF-Auto-Root for the model and the appropriate version of Odin. The process ran smoothly and the application displayed “Pass”. However, when the device was restarting, it got stuck to the Galaxy Note 5 logo. I tried to do a factory reset but the device does not reboot to recovery mode, only download mode. I also tried to reflash the rooting files several times but without success. Presently the phone is not usable and freezes at the Samsung logo. Please advise me on this problem. I would appreciate your response on this matter. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Solution: Hi Lou Mari. The only effective solution to rooting-related issues is by doing a master reset. Supposedly, a successful root procedure will automatically prompt the device to Recovery mode, otherwise the use should boot to recovery manually. Since you are unable to do so, the rooting process may have corrupted the bootloader in some way, preventing the device to boot normally now.

Another good reason to mess up a device when rooting is when a user unintentionally uses an incorrect file. If you think you may have used a wrong file, try to unroot the device by flashing a stock firmware. Again, make sure that you use the correct stock firmware for this job.

Finally, the most common reason for issues encountered after rooting a device — locked bootloaders. Most carriers choose to prevent unofficial modifications to their devices’ software by locking the bootloader. If your phone’s bootloader has been locked and you tried to root it, that’s unfortunate as you just created an expensive paperweight. Contact your carrier and ask their policy towards software modification to know if your device may have a locked bootloader.

For possible solutions, we suggest that you contact the developer of CF-Auto-Root or visit their XDA-Developers forum. We haven’t tried using this root ourselves so we are not familiar with this product. We know that this root does not support all types of Samsung devices so make sure that you get direct information from the source of the code itself.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 5 got damaged after installing software update from AT&T

I have a Note 5 and about 2 weeks ago they did an update for the software. I did it like other people have done. Then since that time my phone was really damaged. I just called AT&T to see if they can fix the problem but they can’t they told me. I have to buy a new phone, called couple times and there is no result.

I called Samsung but there’s no help. When I called AT&T, there is no help because there’s no insurance on my phone. so the only way is to throw away my phone and go buy a new phone and that’s ridiculous because my phone is still brand new. And then I don’t know I was searching online and I seen that you can fill out this to you guys and see you what you can do. Even though right now my phone it will be on 30% on my phone turns off and that’s ridiculous too because I have to put on the charge for another like 20 minutes to start using my phone and that problem starts since the software was updated so I need help please. — Susu

Solution: Hi Susu. Keep in mind that over-the-air (OTA) updates provided by carriers very seldom brick devices. In most cases where phones are rendered unusable after installing an OTA update, the most likely reason stems from the fact that the official software was modified. Software modification usually takes in the form of rooting, flashing non-official ROM, and even installation of third party apps from unreliable source. If your phone was never rooted, or its software remained official during the update installation, your best choice would be to ask direct assistance from your carrier. Since you’ve apparently tried to ask their support without much success, we suggest that you take a more drastic route of manually flashing a stock ROM. If you are not familiar with manual flashing procedure, use Google to find a good guide. The important thing to remember when flashing is to make sure that you use the correct firmware. Each phone model only works with a specific firmware so make sure that you find the correct one.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 5 won’t turn back on

Hi. I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and recently I have been facing these problems. Ever since 4 months ago, I had issues trying to turn on my phone. At times after turning it off it won’t power back on again. It got worse and the green Android robot would pop out and the left top corner would write: could not do normal boot .start udc download. Once I continue to restart my phone, I would be able to use it again. However, recently I could not power on my phone for 2 days straight. I charged it but it doesn’t on no matter how many times I restart it. I would like to know the reason why. — Eunicetay

Solution: Hi Eunicetay. There are a number of things that you should consider when dealing with this problem. The first one is app- or firmware-related reasons. Poorly coded apps or even operating system updates can sometimes lead to boot issues.

To check if an installed third party app may be causing the problem, try to boot your device in safe mode. If you will be able to power on the phone in this mode, make sure to observe it for at least 24 hours. If the problem won’t occur while safe mode is enabled, you can bet one of your apps is to blame. Uninstall apps until the issue is gone.

However, if the problem remains while safe mode is on, or if the phone won’t even boot to safe mode at all, try booting the phone to other modes. Refer to the steps provided above.

We’ve seen cases wherein the only reason why a device won’t boot up normally is due to a bad Power button. If you think the power button is bad, submit the phone for a repair so it can be fixed.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 5 MMS fails when sending or receiving | Galaxy Note 5 keyboard lags when typing

When sending picture MMS from my phone I often get the error “server response error” and it fails. Also, I often can’t download the image that people send me. I try and try but nothing. I have done the resets and the 3 button starts but doesn’t seem to change anything. On the rare occasion it works.

Also I am often waiting for my phone to catch up to my typing. Have plenty of SD space and much room on my storage device. I don’t use many apps – only 3 pages. I type fast with 2 thumbs but I shouldn’t have to wait for it to catch up, should I ? I am eligible for upgrade – thinking of going to Iphone 7. What are your thoughts? A much better phone? I really don’t use. My phone for anything but email, phone messages pics etc in a real estate role. Thank you so much for your help. — Ray

Now, for your slow performance issue or slow keyboard response problem, the first thing that you want is to wipe the cache partition. Here’s how:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  • Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  • The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If the keyboard app remains laggy, do a factory reset and observe the phone for an hour before you install your apps. This will give you an idea whether or not the keyboard works fine when the firmware is fresh. Also, make sure that ALL (as in all) your apps are compatible with your operating system version. You can do so by simply updating them.

For your MMS issue, we strongly suggest that you let your carrier know of the problem, especially if it’s still happening even after a factory reset.

Problem #6: Galaxy Note 5 Wi-Fi not working

I was having the Wi-Fi greyed out issue after an Android update on my Note. I finally Googled it, which resulted in me realizing that another update was available that fixed the issue but since my phone was set to update on Wi-Fi only and I couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi…. you get the idea. So I did the update about a week ago and it seemed to fix the issue. Then last Saturday, I turned on tethering so my kids could watch a video in the car, and although it said tethering was working, their devices never registered (they couldn’t even see my phone). I turned it off but since then, the Wi-Fi button does not work again. I am considering moving on to another phone but I really love this one and I don’t want to get into another contract a week after finishing this one.. Anyone else experiencing this? — Tabi

Solution: Hi Tabi. We hope this is not a hardware issue. To check, try to perform a factory reset and like what we tell Ray above, make sure not to install your apps right away afterwards. Try to see how the Wi-Fi function works right after a factory reset so you’ll the difference. If nothing changes, you can bet hardware malfunction is to blame. In that case, you must find a way to have the phone replaced.

For reference, these are the steps on how to do a factory reset:

  • Create a backup of your files.
  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  • Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  • Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  • The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  • Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  • The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.
