Samsung Galaxy S5 Unable To Charge Issue & Other Related Problems

All of the flagship models that the company has released after this model has its battery sealed inside the device. One advantage of a removable battery is that it can easily be replaced in case something goes wrong with it. Since there are still a lot of people using this model which was released in 2014 it’s very likely that battery issues will occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will address the Galaxy S5 unable to charge issue & other related problems.

S5 Unable To Charge

Problem: My phone will not charge sometimes. Most times it does not charge. It keeps saying unable to charge. When it is off the lightning bolt will appear then it may or may not show the green power up charging but will immediately jump to the yellow caution sign. As I stated earlier, this happens sometimes. It’s as if the phone decides when it wants to charge. Tried a different battery in it, still the same problem, Also tried cleaning port with a toothpick in hopes that it was a buildup of dust. Still no luck. Pleeeaaase help me!

Solution: Usually in cases like this its the battery that needs to be replaced since there’s a possibility that it is already defective. Since you have already changed the battery which didn’t fix the problem then the next possible factor that could be causing this issue is a broken charging port. Sometimes though it i the charger that’s causing this issue. To check if this is the case try to use a different charging cord and wall charger when  charging your phone.

There are also cases where a glitch in the phone software is causing this issue which you should check first. To do this just backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done do not install anything in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then you need to bring your phone to a service center and have it checked. It’s very likely that the charging port will have to be replaced.

S5 Turns Off Automatically After Software Update

Problem: I had software updates this morning. Then, my phone keep turning off automatically. The power does not turn off when I use the app or text or call something (basically if I am using my phone, it’s fine). However, if I leave it alone for about ten minutes, then it turns off.

Solution: If this issue only occured right after a software update then the issue could be caused by some old software data that has not been completely removed from your phone during the update. Try wiping the cache partition of your phone first from the recovery mode then check if the problem still occurs. If it does then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Turns Off When Using Apps

Problem: Phone turns off every time I use any app. Once off the boot screen shows up, it vibrates, goes black and repeats until I plug it in or take the battery out. If it is plugged in then the problem goes away. This problem originally only happened while playing pokemon go but now it happens with any app.  

Solution: If the issue does not occur when the phone is plugged to its charger then it’s possible that the battery is weak. Try getting a new battery and see if this fixes the problem. If it doesn’t then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done do not install anything in your phone yet. Instead, check first if the issue still occurs. This is to make sure that the issue isn’t caused by a third party app.

If the above steps fail to resolve the issue then I suggest you have your phone checked at a service center since this could already be a hardware related problem.

S5 Not Charging With Some Chargers

Problem: I  have a galaxy s5 active and it is extremely fussy about what chargers it will work with. I am using a belkin wall charger, and I also have a portable charger that I like to use. The USB cord works with the wall charger just fine, but when I use the same cord with the portable charger, nothing happens. It will not charge at all. Any idea what the problem could be?

Solution:  Does the problem only occur for his particular portable charger? It’s very likely that the portable charger might not be giving the correct power to the phone which is why it is not charging.

The troubleshooting steps that you need to do to resolve this issue are listed below.

  • Clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air or by blowing into it using a straw. Your aim is to take out any dirt or debris that could be present in this port which could cause charging issues.
  • Try to use a different charging cord.
  • Check if the phone charges with the portable charger when it is switched off. If it charges then it’s likely that the portable charger is not charging the phone with the recommended current.

S5 Slow Charging

Problem: The phone keeps saying that it’s either slowly charging or won’t even charge at all, I have even tried multiple different chargers and it still doesn’t work.

Solution: To ensure that your phone charges properly you should be using the original Samsung charger and charging cord. If you are already using this and the issue still occurs then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below. Check if the issue still occurs after performing each step then move to the next step if the problem remains.

  • Clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air or by blowing to it using a straw. You can also use a toothpick to dislodge any debris that could be present in this port.
  • Try to use a different charging cord.
  • Try using a different charger.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. This is to eliminate any software glitches that could be causing this problem.

If the above steps fail then I suggest you have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Gets Hot Stuck In Samsung Screen

Problem: Just got a  new phone so I put my old s5 in the box as my s6 was ready to use straight away. Came home and I’d forgotten to switch s5 off. The box was hot, the phone was very hot, I removed the battery which was also very hot. I let it cool down for an hour and then Tried 3 times to put battery in and boot it up but it just gets stuck on the Samsung screen.  Please help. Thanks

Solution: The phone should not get hot if it is not being used. This can only happen if there are certain processes in your phone running aggressively or if a hardware issue has occurred. To fix this problem try taking out the battery and the microSD card of your phone ( if one is installed) then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This will discharge the phone circuit and clear out its RAM. Reinsert just the battery then try to turn on the phone.

If the phone does not boot try connecting it to its wall charger then see if this fixes the problem. If the phone starts when the charger is connected then it’s either the battery is not providing the correct power to the phone or the issue is caused by a software glitch. I recommend that you backup your phone data then do a factory.

If the phone does not completely when it is connected to the charger then try starting the phone in recovery mode. If you are able to access this mode then try doing a factory reset. Take note that this will delete your phone data.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Charger Incompatible With Phone

Problem: Samsung power sharing turned on, couldn’t charge, restarted and out in safe mode, turned off Samsung power sharing, but now says original charger incompatible with the phone, and every other charger as well. Tried everything except hard reset.

Solution: Try cleaning the charging port of your phone first using a can of compressed air or by blowing into is using a straw. Your aim is to take out any dirt or debris that could be present in this port. Check if the phone charges.

You should also try using a different charging cord as this cord gets damaged easily and the cord you are using could be damaged.

One last troubleshooting step you can do is a factory reset. Take note that you should backup your phone data before doing this.

If the above steps don’t work then you should have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Keeps On Shutting Down

Problem: Hello. My s5 constantly shuts down even when the battery is still good. I have tried clearing cache memory and did a reset recently but the problem is persistent. My android version is 4.4.2 and never tried updating..It says “your system is up to date” each time i try. Thanks for the help

Solution: You might want to try using a new battery on your phone just to make sure that this issue is not caused by the battery you are using.

I also recommend that you update your phone software first as this could also be causing this problem. If the automatic update fails then try flashing the updated software version. Instructions on how to flash your phone can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

S5 Set Warranty Bit Kernel Error

Problem: After receiving by galaxy s5 back from an authorised repairer it started turning off/on randomly and frequently. After a few days of this the yellow ‘set warranty bit: kernel’ appeared in the top left hand side of the loading screen with the white ‘samsung galaxy s5’. Now the phone won’t turn on past the black loading screen. I have tried to do the ‘hold down the off, home and volume up buttons’ but it won’t load past the writing in blue ‘recovery booting…’ to navigate the options (whatever they are) Unfortunately I didn’t do a back up when I first started having problems. This totally sucks because I hate losing photos of my kids growing up!! Please help…

Solution: It looks like the phone software has become corrupt. The best way to deal with this is to manually flash your phone with its updated stock software.
