When the #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 was released two years ago it had one of the best displays among the smartphone models available in the market then. This device sports a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display with a Full HD 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution. This makes images appear very detailed on the screen. While the screen of this phone is quite outstanding there are instances when issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 screen will not light up issue & other related problems. S5 Screen Will Not Light Up
Problem: Hello, this is my third s5. I have done the reboot, system reboot, taking the battery out ending all apps etc. My screen will not light up but I can hear the sounds. If I take the battery out then turn back on I’ll hear the T-Mobile jingle but my screen won’t light up. I push the power button on the left and the two keys on the bottom light up but not my screen. I just got this third replacement phone on Thursday and Saturday it started. It is very, very frustrating to have phone replaced three times and still have issues. Your help and advice is greatly appreciated, thank you.
Solution: If you already performed a factory reset and the screen still does not light up then there’s a possibility that the display of the phone needs to be replaced as it is already damaged or its connection to the motherboard has become loose. I recommend you bring your phone to a service center and have it repaired.
S5 Blank Screen
Problem: Phone was on charger. I heard the little T-Mobile jingle and went to check because I only get that jingle when the phone boots up and there was no reason for it to reboot. The screen was blank, no response to the home key. Removed the battery, let the phone drain, put the battery back in. Tried turning it on, tried soft reset, tried recovery mode, still blank screen. The phone boots but no screen. Shortly after pushing the start button, I get the vibration and the lower half of the screen flickers once. Then the T-Mobile jingle and all the little lights flash but a blank screen. Might the screen just be dead or could it be the Lollipop upgrade? Should I arrange for a funeral?
Solution: Try connecting the phone to its charger then check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then the phone might not be getting enough power from the battery, try replacing this battery with a new one. If the issue persists and since you mentioned that it even occurs even in Recovery Mode then it’s very likely a hardware issue already. The connection between the display might be loose or the display itself is damaged. I recommend that you bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
S5 Display Glitching
Problem: Hello out of the blue without dropping my phone or dropping it in water it started glitching. When the phone is locked I can press the home or lock screen to activate the phone and sometimes it boots right up, other times it flashes and goes blank and takes several tries locking and unlocking it before it will turn on and allow me to use it. Another problem is in some apps and when the phone is on the lowest brightness setting it will glitch and flash in a green and pixelated way until I raise the brightness and it is very concerning to me, as it has slowly gotten worse and I did nothing to cause it.
Solution: Sometimes the glitching that occurs on the phone screen is caused by some form of corrupt data in the phone. It can also be caused by an app you downloaded. To troubleshoot this issue try wiping the cache partition of your phone first from the recovery mode. Restart your phone then check if the issue still occurs. If it does then the next step is to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem. Start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are prevented from running. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
One last troubleshooting step that you can do is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this. In case the issue still persist even after the factory reset then you should have your phone checked at a service center as this could already be a hardware related problem possibly due to a faulty display.
S5 Screen Is Black Except Notification Bar
Problem: About 3 times per day, on ‘most days’- screen is black except the notification bar contents is visible. Notification bar is unresponsive. Screen taps, home screen button, single press on power button is totally unresponsive. If I hold the power button it will show the option to restart the phone. This is my only option to get the phone working again. No recent upgrades, no previous screen damage or issues. It just seems to have started about 2 weeks ago. I tried the ‘remove battery, press and hold power button for a minute’. The problem will return in a day or two. I tried to see if it is related to an app or incoming data (mail, text etc) I do not see a common time or issue that causes this. I also removed the ADW launcher app- but problem continues.
Solution: Since the notification bar can be seen then I suspect that the issue could be caused by an app installed in your phone or some form of corrupt data. Try starting the phone in Safe Mode then observe if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it is very likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it. If the problem occurs even in Safe Mode then I recommend that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S5 Screen Flickers
Problem: When I use my device at a low mid brightness it works fine and has no problems however when I lock my phone and I press the lock button to use it again the screen doesnt come on and the screen flickers green after about 7 or 8 tries constantly pressing it it comes back on I don’t why this issue is occurring I haven’t had any problems before. Also when I use my phone at low brightness the screen flickers green to stop this I searched on google and to told me to disable hardware rendering. Thank you if you can help I would really appreciate it.
Solution: Try turning off the automatic screen brightness feature of your phone the set the brightness level to maximum. Check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then the phone’s sensor might be faulty. If the issue still occurs then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below. Move to the next step should the problem still occur.
- Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
- Start your phone in Safe Mode. If the issue does not occur in this mode then an app might be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then I recommend that you have your phone checked at a service center as this is most likely a hardware related issue already.
S5 Screen Freezing Flickering
Problem: My S5 has been freezing and flickering for sometime now, but it has gotten worse recently. I have to remove the battery to restart, the next 1 minute its back to the freezing and flickering. Although my screen is cracked but that has been a long time now. What can be the possible cause of it? Thanks.
Solution: Try backing up your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done do not install anything in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. If it does then it’s very likely that the cracked display is causing this issue. I recommend that you have this checked at a service center.
