Note 4 Randomly Freezes
Problem: My phone freezes at intervals. It is completely random, and is often prompted when engaging in an app or just unlocking the screen when the phone has been inactive for awhile. It often crashes and then restarts.
What I’ve tried so far:
- soft reset (taking the battery out and pressing the POWER button for a minute)
- Master reset through recovery boot
- factory reset several times
- firmware flash (5.1.1 model same as mine) from sammobile.com with Odin 3.11 ( or 3.09 I can’t remember).
- installing Nova launcher as an alternative.
- wipe cache partition
- installed and run master cleaner
I’m quite at a loss here. Could it be a hardware problem? In between the crashes the phone runs like new. looking forward to receiving your help ! and thanks !
Solution: Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If it has then try taking it out. You should also try installing the latest Marshmallow update on your phone then check if the issue still occurs. If the problem remains then you should have your phone checked at a service center as this is most likely a hardware issue already.
Note 4 Turns Off When Call Is Received
Problem: When I receive a call, the phone starts ringing and occasionally, after a few scones the phone completely shut off itself and restarts without requiring any sim card pin number entry at all. If I see who is calling before it shuts off then I know who called. Otherwise, if I didn’t see the callers name before shut off then there is no way I can know who the caller was because it doesn’t record it in the incoming calls diary. Hence I happen to miss a lot of calls and don’t know who really called. Worst of all is that during the shut off it send a call reject signal to the calling party. Many people think I rejected their calls in a rude way and they don’t call me anymore. Please help! The phone is within warranty period but the local Samsung service tells me I should leave the phone for at least a few days. What will I do without my phone? The battery does not seem to be worn down either. I usually don’t charge it at more than 80 or 90 % level and that is usually more than enough through the end of the day. I try not to let it drop down below 30% charge. Please help me. Best regards.
Solution: you should start the troubleshooting by checking if an app you installed is causing the problem. To do this just start the phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the preinstalled apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are barred from running. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it’s most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the problem still occurs even in Safe Mode then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. This erases the temporary data of your phone which if corrupt causes this problem.
You should also consider doing a factory reset to eliminate any software issues that could be causing this problem. Take note that you need to backup your phone data before doing the reset.
I suggest you try using a new battery on your phone if the factory reset fail to fix the problem.
If the above steps fail then you should have your phone checked at a service center.
Note 4 Error When Installing Marshmallow Update
Problem: I have samsung galaxy note 4, I have tried to update from Lollipop to marshmallow. After I have started installing the OP, I got the droid logo with the set “Installing system update”, it worked util 92%, but after that I got the a lying loge with a triangle and exclamation mark and the set “error” and the logo. Then the phone restarted und till now it restarts without any changes. So, I have read many solutions on your website, one solution was to wipe cache partition. But when I attempt to do that, I get the same thing, instead to get the sentence “no command” after the sentence “Installing system update”, I still get the “error”. How can I resolve this problem without to delete my data? Or is there any way to backup my data before doing a factory reset? Thanks in advance
Solution: It’s very likely that the problem is caused by a corrupted update installation. Try taking out the phone battery and microSD card ( if one is present) then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This will discharge the phone circuit and clear its RAM. Reinsert just the battery then turn on the phone. If the issue remains then try to access the recovery mode. From here there are two things that you should do. Perform the second step if the first step fails to fix the problem.
- Wipe the cache partition
- Do a factory rest ( this will delete your phone data)
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should consider flashing your phone with its updated firmware. Instructions on how to perform this procedure can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.
Note 4 Freezes When Running Apps
Problem: My phone often freezes when running apps like iHeart radio as I listen to music while driving. there are times when I have the app running and navigation running at the same time. However, recently I noticed my screen go blank and wouldn’t turn on. when I picked up the phone I notice it was really hot, so I removed the battery and let it set for an hour or so. I’m wondering if the updates that T-Mobile had anything to do with the symptoms I’m experiencing.
Solution: If you are using a streaming app and a navigation app at the same time then the phone will generate a considerable amount of heat which is normal. Regarding the phone freezing this might be caused by the iHeart radio app if it only occurs when you use this app. Try clearing the cache and data of the app then check if you still experience the same problem. If the issue still occurs then uninstall the app and reinstall a fresh version from the Google Play Store.
If the issue still occurs then I suggest you try wiping the cache partition of your phone. This will erase the temporary data stored in the device which could be causing the problem.
One last troubleshooting step that you should consider is a factory reset. Take note that you need to backup your phone data before proceeding with this.
Note 4 Lagging And Freezing After Drop
Problem: I am using Samsung Note Edge. I dropped my phone twice and after dropping it, the phone seems to be lagging and freeze. I have purchased 3 different battery and it seems to use the battery power quite fast for all 3 batteries. I charged at 100% and after 4 hours(Sometimes I don’t use it at all), it will then be 15%. Also, I have start to transfer my pictures and videos to my MicroSD card instead of the phone memory, as I thought it will lag the phone. After these 2 issues, my hp just completely lag, freeze and will lock itself. Usually, it will lag on apps and Settings. Even going to the Settings to find out the Android version, will take about 2 mins to open up and after that it went to lock version. When I open Whatsapp, it will lag and freeze, I have to wait for it before doing anything. Once done, I will restart the phone. Aside from Whatsapp, on Facebook, Phone(try calling) and even Settings, it will freeze and not able to do anything. I tried to switch off and when I try to click on shutdown or restart, it will not let me. Hence, I have to wait for the phone then I can do my actions of restarting or shut down. Sometimes, i need to pull the battery out to get it done. What should I do? You mentioned backup the phone- where should I backup my phone? Like google drive or thumbdrive/hardisk?
Solution: Use the Smart Switch software which you can download from the Samsung website to backup your phone.
- Connect your phone using a USB cord to your computer
- Launch the Smart Switch app on your computer.
- Click Backup.
- You’ll be required to allow access permissions on your phone.
- Pick up your phone.
- Tap Allow.
- Once the backup has completed you will get a breakdown of all the data that was successfully backed up. Click OK to finish.
As soon as you have made a backup of your data I suggest that you perform a factory reset.
Note 4 Has Password After Marshmallow Update
Problem: Can’t use my phone because the marshmallow update put a password on it when there wasn’t one before the update. I have never enabled the password protection before and my phone was open. I did the update and it booted up to a password screen. Factory reset isn’t an option I have contact information, pictures and video, along with saved emails receipts and tax documents on here. Need this unlocked or at least a way to undo the marshmallow update.
Solution: This is an issue that affects most Samsung Galaxy devices that have updated to Marshmallow. You can fix this by heading over to the findmymobile.samsung.com website where you can first lock then unlock the phone. In order for this to work you should have a Samsung account specific to this device.
If you don’t have a Samsung account then you will need to contact a Samsung customer care representative.
Note 4 Keeps On Restarting
Problem: Phone restarts whenever it feels like. Just yesterday it restarted over 30 times. Usually happens during a call, opening an app, using the camera, sometimes restarting takes 2 mins, sometimes 10, sometimes it randomly pops a screen up that says “Downloading do not turn off the target”. Also, apps sometimes take 30 seconds to minutes to respond. It’s happening enough that I’m afraid to use my phone. Took it to a Samsung walk-in service centre, they did a hardware test and reinstalled everything from new. Hardware test came back and everything is fine. It is 2 years old and the carrier is Rogers. Help?
Solution: If the phone hardware is fine then this might be a software related issue. I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is done don’t install anything in your phone just yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs. Take note that if you have a microSD card installed in your phone you should take this out before doing the reset and return it after testing if the issue still occurs.
Note 4 Can’t Get Out Of Lock Mode
Problem: When the device goes to lock, after a short period of time it is impossible to get out of that state. None of the hardware buttons will bring it back. Only way to start the device is to remove the battery and put it back in. As long as I don’t let the device lock I can use it. I have done a factory reset and it still occurs. I tried to run the device in safe mode and it still happens.
Solution: Since you already performed a reset then this could already be a hardware problem. I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
