Problem: Hi. I need your help because my phone turned off and it will not turn back on. All I know is that there was an update that downloaded to my phone and one day after that the phone turned off and won’t turn back on. I don’t understand why Samsung have to update a perfect device and ruin it. Please help me. By the way, my phone is a Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Thanks.

Troubleshooting: Samsung wants its devices, especially the flagships, to have an up-to-date firmware that’s when Google releases a new version of Android, a few week after, Samsung (and other manufacturers for that matter) will also release a new firmware based on the new Android version. Updates are supposed to fix known issues with the previous version and patch security loopholes that hackers often use to gather information.

With the new firmware installed, old problems get fixed but new ones emerge not to mention issues during and after the update and yours is just one of them. At first glance, it would seem like it’s a firmware issue but we really don’t know that. Therefore, it’s necessary to troubleshoot your device. Follow the steps I laid out for you below to troubleshoot this issue…

Step 1: Perform the Forced Reboot procedure

System crash often happens after system updates. Before you actually jump into your troubleshooting, just verify first if it’s not just a firmware crash issue.

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key together for 10 to 15 seconds. If there’s enough battery left to power up the components, your phone will reboot normally.

Step 2: Try to charge the phone for 10 minutes

Perhaps the reason why your phone turned off on its own and refused to come back on is because the battery is drained. So, after trying to force reboot the device and it’s still unresponsive, get the charger and plug it in.

Aside from the obvious reason, you need to do this to know how the device responds when it detects current is flowing through its circuits. Normally, the S6 Edge+ will display the charging icon on the screen while lighting up the LED above the display. If none of these charging signs show, then the phone might not be detecting electric current or the firmware is frozen and cannot respond.

At this point, try to force restart the device but this time leave it plugged in to make sure there’s power. If the problem persists, then proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Check the charger, USB cable and the ports

Maybe the battery was totally drained and the reason why the phone isn’t charging is because the charger is damaged, the USB cable is broken or something is corroding the ports and preventing power contacts between receptors.

In this step, try to check the port on your charger for debris or dirt. If you can find some, clean it out using a q tip or a blast of compressed air. If the port looks clean, check the cable for breaks or anything unusual. Also try to see if the pins on both ends are not dislocated and corroded.

Lastly, check the USB charging port on your phone for the same reason. There have been reports of misaligned pins in the port so if this is the case, you can gently straighten them out using a toothpick or tweezers.

Step 4: Try booting your device in recovery mode

The Android system recovery, otherwise known as recovery mode, requires all hardware components to be powered up but the Android user interface isn’t loaded. Meaning, the phone will run on its barebones.

If the problem is with the firmware, then the device will boot up successfully in recovery mode but if it’s the hardware that’s the problem, there’s no way you can power it up. So, try these steps to boot your Galaxy S6 Edge Plus into recovery mode:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.

Step 5: If all else fails, seek help from a technician or send the phone in for repair

After doing all those troubleshooting steps and the problem isn’t fixed, then there’s really something wrong with your phone and we just can’t pinpoint it out without doing some tests. On your end, there’s nothing much you can do about it. So, make an appointment with technician and have it checked, tested or repaired.

Galaxy S6 Edge Plus won’t boot up after an update

Problem: I am so happy I found your blog because finally, I can ask someone about a problem with my phone before I go to the store and have it checked. First of all, my phone is a brand new S6 edge+ which was given to me by my daughter. I have another phone, an iPhone, so I still have something I could use in the absence of the other that’s why I can afford to have it fixed at a later date and I just want to make sure that I can’t do anything about the problem before going to a technician.

The problem is my phone updated on its own about 5 days ago and I was able to use it for a couple of days and then it got stuck when I tried to reboot it. You know, there’s a logo that loads up when you turn the phone on, that’s where it’s stuck. I can’t get past that screen. What gives? Troubleshooting: Being stuck during boot up can be caused by some apps that keep crashing due to compatibility issues with the new firmware, some caches or data got corrupted during the update process, the update itself is corrupt or lacking some files, etc. To troubleshoot this problem, try these…

Step 1: Boot your Galaxy S6 Edge+ in safe mode

Booting in safe mode will temporarily disable all third-party apps. If one of those apps is causing the problem, then your device should be able to boot up in safe mode successfully and if this is the case, all you need to do is find that app and uninstall it. This is how you put your device in safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  3. Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  4. You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.

Step 2: Delete the system cache of your Galaxy S6 Edge Plus

If booting in safe mode didn’t yield anything, then it’s time to go after the system cache. All system and apps caches are stored in the directory called ‘cache partition.’ In this step, all you have to do is wipe the directory out to get rid of bad caches. The fact is you will be deleting all caches regardless whether they’re corrupt or not but don’t worry as they can be deleted at will without any adverse effects on the system.

The truth is it is even recommended to delete the caches once in a while (especially after firmware updates) to replace them with new ones. So, follow these steps and see if the phone can successfully boot up after this procedure…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Step 3: Try to do the master reset to see if your S6 Edge Plus boots up

Assuming you have successfully booted up in recovery mode and have already deleted the system cache, it’s time you reset the device to see if it would fix the problem. This procedure, however, will delete all your files and data and since it couldn’t boot up, there’s no way to back them up.

So, for this step, it’s your call if you want to continue or not but this is the step you shouldn’t skip if you’re planning to get the phone seen by a technician. It won’t just reset your phone, it would also delete all personal information saved in it. If you’re a person who values privacy more than others, reset your phone before you let somebody handle it.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
