S6 Unfortunately Messages Has Failed

Problem: I can not start a new conversation with someone. As in if i text a number that i have text messages already with that haven’t been deleted it works just fine. But i text a new number that i currently have no text with the messaging app crashes with “unfortunately messages has failed” and if a new number texts me i do not get the text. Please help!

Solution: The first thing that you should do in this case is to check if the issue is caused by some corrupt data stored in the app. Try clearing the cache and data of the Messages app from the application manager then check if the issue still occurs. If the problem still occurs after this your next step is to check if a third party app installed in your phone is causing the problem. Sometimes apps that you downloaded can cause a conflict with the messaging app resulting in this issue. To check if this is what’s happening right now just start your phone in Safe Mode then try sending a text message in this mode.  If the problem doesn’t occur then it is most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the above steps fail to resolve the problem then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S6 Not Downloading Attachments From Text Message

Problem: Hello, I have received two text messages with pictures attached but when I try to download the attachment. I get an error “”Download of <no subject> from (phone number) failed”  What do I have to do to get my phone to download attachments to text messages? I am running android 6.1.  Thanks.

Solution: There are three possible reasons why this issue is happening. First, the phone may not have the correct settings to download picture messages. Second, the messaging app could have an issue. Third, you are not using a mobile data connection when downloading the message.

Here’s what you need to do to resolve this issue. Try checking the APN settings of your phone and make sure that it is correct. You should compare this to the setting your carrier is using and make sure that the phone setting matches. Make the necessary APN setting changes in your phone if needed.

If the problem is caused by the app you should try clearing the cache and data of the messaging app then check if you are now able to download the text message. You should also check if a third party app installed in your phone is causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode. If you are able to download the attachment in this mode then the issue could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Finally, in order for this to work you should make sure to use your mobile data subscription and not use a Wi-Fi connection.

S6 Text Message App Very Slow After Marshmallow Update

Problem: I installed the new marshmallow update last night and now my text messages app is running very slow and keeps shutting down with error message (Messages has closed). I can still send and receive messages; however, it keeps shutting down. I wiped the cache and rebooted my phone but am still having the problem. Any other solution to fix this?

Solution: Wiping the cache partition of the phone is a good troubleshooting step. Since the issue still occurs after doing this then the next thing you should do is to try to clear the cache and data of the messaging app. Sometimes corrupt data in the app can cause this type of issue.

If you have several apps that you installed in your device then this could also contribute to the problem. Try to check if there are any new updates for your phone apps by opening the Google Play Store and going to the My Apps section. You should also try to start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then an app you downloaded could be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the above steps fail to resolve the issue then your last resort is to do a factory reset. This is a highly recommended step that needs to be done whenever issues occur right after a software update since it can effectively take out the old software data which is likely causing the problem.

S6 Text Messages Are Sent As Group Messages

Problem: When I send a text to a contact it will come back to me as a group text between me and the contact I sent it to. This doesn’t happen with all outgoing texts but a few different ones…like my husband for one. I will text him and it will ping me back that I got that text…so now I have 2 text conversations going with him…one with my outgoing message and another with his responses.. I just can’t figure it out. I recently try tried to delete duplicate contacts…I also have been trying to merge contacts as I have many duplicates. Thanks!

Solution: Try to have the contact you are having an issue with delete your messaging thread in their device. Once it is deleted send them a regular text message then have them reply to it. Check if it arrives as a group message in your device.

If the issue still occurs try resetting the messaging app by clearing its cache and data from the application manager.

You should also check if a third party app is causing this to happen by starting the phone in Safe Mode. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it is most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

One final troubleshooting step that you should consider should the issue persist is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

S6 Not Getting Text Messages After Software Update

Problem: i keep on having problems when it comes to receiving text messages. it’s as if my phone is very selective with what test messages i get because with some people i get their messages perfectly fine but with others i don’t get anything at all. this started happening right after the update occurred and i’ve only tried restarting my phone but that didn’t do anything at all.

Solution: Have you checked if you have placed certain numbers in the spam list? Try checking if this is the case.

  • Go into Messages, then tap on “More” in the top right corner and select Settings
  • Go into Spam filter
  • Tap on Manage spam numbers

If you have not setup any spam numbers and since this issue occured right after a software update then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S6 Not Getting Text Message Reply

Problem: Another Samsung user sent replies to my text messages. He has screen grabs of them, but on my phone all I see are 3 of my texts to him (no responses in between)  I thought he wasn’t responding at all. Now i’m worried this is happening with other users too but I’m not aware. Is there any way to know, and/or to fix this? I know I was in an area with service when these messages were supposedly sent.

Solution: The first thing that you need to do in this case is to make sure that the contact has not been included in the spam numbers list.

  • Go into Messages, then tap on “More” in the top right corner and select Settings
  • Go into Spam filter
  • Tap on Manage spam numbers

Next, try checking if a third party app is involved in this issue by starting your phone in Safe Mode. Check if the problem still occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

One last resort that you can do should the issue still persist is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this.
