I have a GS6 Model SM-S906L purchased via “Straight Talk Wireless,” a TracFone company. This model is a variant of the Verizon GS6 but due to it being ‘owned’ by ST, I’m unable to update the software to 6.0+ from its current 5.0.2. I tried searching online and dug through the XDA-Developers forums and couldn’t find a straight answer on flashing a Marshmallow ROM (preferably a stock ROM) to this device. Normally I’m pretty adventurous and tested methods via trial and error with my old HTC Inspire and my previous LG G2. However since I paid the ST price of $499.99 for the phone I’m a little more conservative this time. I don’t mind taking a risk so long as the information posted online to do so is given in good-spirit and without negligence or malicious intent. (Lots of douche-bags on the internet lol, but also a lot of kind and helpful people too).
If y’all have any information on updating the software on this device I’d greatly appreciate it. I’ll list as much info as I can think to add below. Thank you for your time and consideration in simply reading this message, even if you’re unable to assist I still appreciate your time.

Solution: Hi Andrew. We recommend manual flashing of ROM as one of the last desperate solutions in some cases but there’s no one ROM that we suggest in particular. That’s because we don’t know the reliability of any guide we find online. Most of the time, custom ROMs work but they are also not perfect. Many users will find to their dismay later on that their device becomes even more buggy than when they’re using a stock ROM. It is due to this fact that we refrain from suggesting any particular custom or unofficial firmware in our blog.
If you are really on intent on updating your S6 to Marshmallow via unofficial means, kindly visit other blogs to ask for more specific ROMs to start with. A good thing to consider when looking for the firmware is to ensure that it is specifically modified for the said phone model and build number. If you can’t find the correct firmware anywhere, that’s an indication that a developer may yet to work on your specific phone model and yet to release said firmware in the wild.
Fingerprint Scanner Not Working After Marshmallow Update. Ever since I’ve updated to Marshmallow, my fingerprint scanner does not work. It displays the error message of “Please ensure the screen is clean /dry.”
This is experienced even going into the setup mode to add fingerprints, displaying the same message stating the button is dirty/wet.
At first I initially believed it was my case as it has a plastic cover over the sensor however now that I have changed cases and the sensor is exposed, it is still persisting.
I have already wiped the cache partition as well as gone into the application settings and force stopped the fingerprint application, neither of which have resolved the issue. What is the best course of action? Thanks! — Mitch
Solution: Hi Mitch. The next step you want to do is factory reset. Here’s how:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
I woke up early in the morning and played a video on YouTube. For some reasons there was no sound and i tried to restart my phone and then it got stuck. it kept saying starting apps but it never really started. I managed to reset the factory settings and it started working but i got stuck with google login cause i had changed the password and i couldn’t use the phone. When i did a reboot again it didn’t boot. There was a black screen with the blue indicator blinking and nothing else.
I tried everything that there is on the internet. I even found firmware android and flashed using but it still won’t work. I keep getting Android is upgrading…starting apps on the screen and nothing happens.

Solution: Hi Milan. If the phone remains stuck in a particular page even after a factory reset or flashing of a different ROM, we doubt if there’s anything else that you can do at this point. These two things you did (factory reset and flashing) are the most drastic solutions users can do on their end after everything else fails. Your best hope for resolution now is to find a way to have the phone replaced as there’s no other solution that you can do.
First of all sorry for my poor English. I am a Brazilian living in Brazil. I bought an S6 in Chicago, unlocked, to be used in Brazil. Everything was working absolutely normal with no complications or problems. However, in the last three days, when trying to use whatever app, all of them have been closed almost instantaneously (1 to 2 seconds) after being started, with no reason, returning the screen to the “first page”.
I’ve tried to do all remedies to solving this problem, following all instructions extracted from internet, such us cleaning some unused apps, clearing every cache of apps, etc. Nothing worked!
As last and desperate attempt I restored my phone to factory default.
Unfortunately, even restoring my phone to the factory default, the problem remains, preventing me even to setting the initial settings.
I did the backup of everything to my PC using Samsung Switch App.
Please let me know what can I do by myself considering that I live in Brazil.

Solution: Hi Lismar. So what exactly is the problem now? Are you having trouble doing the initial setup after a factory reset, or has passed initial setup but apps are still closing by themselves?
If you managed to do the factory reset but could not complete the initial setup, a deeper problem may be the cause like a hardware malfunction. Obviously, no amount of software troubleshooting can resolve a hardware issue. You must find a way to have the phone checked or replaced.
However, if the apps continue to fail after you re-install them following a factory reset, one of them may actually be the main reason. Do another round of factory reset and observe the device for at least 24 hours without installing anything. This will help you determine if our hunch that one of the apps is the culprit is true.
Problem #5: Galaxy S6 messaging app is laggy | Google Music and Pandora apps not working properly | Galaxy S6 apps are laggy and not working properly
Hi. I’ve been having annoying problems with this very expensive phone. My texting is constantly lagging, it’s takes a while to load my threads upon opening them as well as sending a text. If I send more than one message at a time it becomes glitchy and has trouble sending them. The messages will switch places a few times before they are both officially sent.
Also, my music apps will not connect to the internet. I will have good signal but Google Music and Pandora both will lose connectivity the entire time I use them. Google music doesn’t connect at all anymore. When I open the app, every feature is grayed out, not allowing me to use anything but my downloaded music on my phone. With Pandora it will load one song while I’m on the app, when I lock my phone and let it play, it only finishes that one song and won’t load again until I open it back up and mess with it. I only downloaded pandora because I got tired of fighting with my Google music app, only to encounter similar problems. This is quite frustrating seeing how I’m paying an arm and a leg for this phone and expected great things from it. I appreciate any advice, thank you so much! — Messina
Solution: Hi Messina. The first thing that you want is to ensure that the phone’s system cache is fresh. You can do that by wiping the cache partition via recovery mode. Here’s how to do it:
- Turn the Galaxy S6 off.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Power and Home buttons at the same time until the Android logo appears, and the phone vibrates.
- Release the Power button but continue to hold the other buttons.
- Use the volume buttons to scroll down to highlight Wipe Cache Partition.
- Press the Power button to confirm
- Scroll down to Yes and press the Power button
- Scroll to Reboot System Now and press Power
- Your Galaxy S6 will reboot with a cleared system cache
Once you’ve cleared the system cache, try to use Google Music and Pandora again to see if they’re working now.
If the issue remains, the next step is to wipe the cache and data of each problematic app. Wiping an app’s cache and/or data is the first thing a user must do to fix any app-specific problems. Provided there’s no coding-related causes from the developer’s side, which means that there’s nothing that you can do on your end, any app problem can be easily fixed by doing this solution.
This is mostly effective if an app stops working in the middle of an operation or if it appears sluggish. The most likely reason for such behaviors can be attributed to a corrupted or outdated app cache. Your phone, like an old-school computer, needs to place frequently accessed data and other app-specific information to separate folder to efficiently open apps next time. That place is the cache. Sometimes, app changes or updates may create newer information or data that may not be properly reflected in the cache, creating a mismatch of some files. This can lead to issues later so forcing the phone to generate a new cache and data may help fix the problem.
Keep in mind that wiping the data of the messaging app you’re using will wipe your text messages.
To delete a Samsung Galaxy S6 cache and data, just follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Proceed to Applications.
- Select Manage Applications.
- Tap the All tab.
- Choose the name of the app in question.
- From there, look for Clear Cache and Clear data buttons.
If these two solutions won’t fix the issues, you can also try to boot your S6 in safe mode to see if another third party app is the culprit. If you’ll be able to use the messaging app without any issues, or if Google Music app works properly while safe mode is enabled, that’s a confirmation that an app is indeed responsible. You have to isolate which app is problematic until you have eliminated the issue. Here are the steps on how to boot your S6 in safe mode:
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
- Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
- You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.
Now, if any of these steps fail, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset.
