Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge screen started flickering & other screen-related issues

We received some reports from our readers who own Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge units complaining about some screen related issues including screen flickering, display turned black and won’t turn on. These issues can be caused by apps that keep on crashing, corrupt firmware and more hardware issues. You can still do something about the first two causes, however, when it comes to hardware issues, they’re off limits especially if you still value the warranty of your device.

A: Hello Shibly. I watched the videos and looked at the pictures and it seems like it’s really a hardware problem. However, there are a couple of troubleshooting procedures you can try to see if they can make a difference. The first one is to delete the system cache which may fix “MINOR” firmware and hardware issues especially if they occur after an update. Here’s how…

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

The second procedure you can try (but still no guarantee) is master reset. However, you need to go through the hassle of backing up every bit of data you don’t want to lose in your phone such as your pictures, music, videos, etc. It is also important you do it before you send the phone in for repair when you go back to the UK.

  1. Backup your data.
  2. Remove your Google account.
  3. Disengage screen lock.
  4. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  5. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.

NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.

  1. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  2. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.

NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.

  1. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  2. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  3. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  4. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  5. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

When it comes to hardware issues, there’s only so much we can do about them.

Q: “I noticed that there were 4 dark areas on my 2 week old s7 edge. When I adjusted the brightness to maximum the lines disappeared but when I adjusted it to dark 4 prominent lines appear. I never dropped it or spilled anything on it. I never pressed it hard nor do I put it on tight pants pockets. I tried rebooting it but nothing happened. It’s still there.

A: A lot of S7 and S7 Edge owners reported similar problems and majority point to the hardware being at fault. However, there were also reports that such case may also be caused by factors. In your case, try to see if it has something to do with the theme. Try to change the theme of your phone and see if those lines disappear. If not, then it’s time to call your provider or Samsung and claim warranty for it. If it’s a hardware problem, then there’s nothing we can do about it as a technician is needed to do further investigations and tests.

Q: “The screen is ultra sensitive, the Touchwiz is a bit laggy/glitchy at times, i.e. swiping from home screen page to page isn’t smooth.

A: According to Samsung, S7 Edge’s screen is sensitive enough that users probably won’t need the sensitivity setting that’s why if you were asking how to make the screen less sensitive, sorry buddy, there’s nothing we can do per se. Now, about the Touchwiz being “a bit laggy or glitchy,” try to verify first if it’s not caused by other apps that could be freezing or crashing. Try to isolate the problem by booting your phone in safe mode and observing it if TW still lags.

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If the problem remained in safe mode, then you should try wiping the cache partition first and if that won’t work, then you really have to do the reset. Backup your data and follow the procedure to do the master reset in the first problem.

 

Q: “Please help, I have a black screen on my S7 Edge. I have tried everything on your page and it still won’t turn on. Upgraded to this phone on 23/4/16 so outside my grace period. Store said all I can do is send it off for repair which will take 2 weeks.

A: Okay so your S7 Edge got a black screen, when did it start and what could have caused it? I’m certain something happened or occurred like the phone lagged, rebooted, won’t charge or anything at all.

We’re always willing to help but if there’s not enough information, it’s difficult for us to begin our troubleshooting. So, in your case, I would assume two things; first, that it’s a minor system crash and second, if it’s not a system crash, then it must be an issue with the firmware or the hardware.

As to the system crash, all you need to do is press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys (in that order) together for 10 seconds until the phone reboots. If it didn’t respond to Forced Reboot procedure, then it must either be a firmware or hardware issue. So, for this, you need to send it in for repair.

Q: “Hi. My Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is only 2 weeks old and now the screen turns on by itself and therefore uses battery and someone can read my phone. Please help soon.

A: Wakelocks. They’re often the reason why Android phones wakes up from being idle. Most of them came with apps you installed. Try installing Wakelock Detector from the Play Store to detect them and get rid of them.
