S5 Can’t Access Internet

Problem: I’m new to smartphones and just recently purchased my Samsung Galaxy S5, so please forgive my ignorance.  My problem is that I can not access the internet if I am not connected to WiFi.  I assume something isn’t properly set on my phone.  We have our plan with Smart Talk using the Verizon network.  Wouldn’t there be some kind of roaming capability outside a WiFi connection?  Can you help?  Thanks

Solution: The most likely reason why you are unable to connect to the Internet using mobile data is that the phone may not have the correct APN settings yest. The APN or Access Point Name is a gateway between the network ( which is your carrier)  and the Internet. Each carrier has their own unique APN setting. To make sure that your phone is using the correct APN setting contact your service provider regarding this. You may need to configure this setting in your phone if necessary.

Other reasons as to why you are unable to connect to your mobile data are as follows.

  • Mobile data switch is off. Just turn it on.
  • No mobile data subscription. Check on this with your service provider.
  • An app in your phone is preventing you from connecting to your mobile data. To check if this is the case just start your phone in Safe Mode. Try to use your mobile data in this mode. If you are able to go online then the issue could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

S5 Not Connecting To Wi-Fi After Marshmallow Update

Problem: I updated my Galaxy S5 from Lollipop to Marshmallow and now I don’t have WIFI. I reset my modem and router and turned my phone off for 10mins and turned everything back on and still no WIFI. It will connect for 5 seconds and then disconnect. This sucks!

Solution: This issue happens quite a lot not only to this model but other models as well that have updated to Marshmallow. Rebooting the modem/ router and your phone is one way to fix this issue. Unfortunately in this case it does not seem to help. What you should do next is to delete the Wi-Fi connection from your phone. Restart your phone then add the connection again.

If the issue still persists then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. This is a highly recommended procedure whenever issues occur right after an update since it effectively removes the old software data that could still be in your device and is most likely causing this problem.

S5 No Network Data

Problem: Got unlocked Verizon S5 for my AT&T service. Got calls and sms but no network data. No instructions and I’m a novice with tech. Help if possible it’s much appreciated.

Solution: You will need the correct APN settings to be setup in your device. For AT&T the settings are listed below.

  • Access the Settings menu.
  • Tap Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
  • Tap Mobile Networks.
  • Tap Access Point Names.
  • Select the option to add a new APN. This is usually accessed by a + symbol on the screen or by tapping the menu button.
  • Program each field using the settings below.

  • Port: Not set
  • Username: Not set
  • Password: Not set
  • Server: Not set

S5 No LTE Connection

Problem: I recently bought an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S5. I put my sim card from my Grand Prime into the S5 and instead of showing “LTE” like it did on the Grand Prime, it was only showing a faded “4G”. I tried manually setting the APN and that did nothing. I’ve tried looking up what to do but they all say the same thing that ends up not working. Thank you for your time.

Solution: If the APN settings of your phone are correct but you are still not getting any LTE or 4G connection then try to perform the following troubleshooting steps listed below. Move to the next step if the current step fails to resolve the issue. Before proceeding with the troubleshooting make sure that you have an active mobile data subscription that’s capable of accessing the LTE network and that you have the Wi-Fi switch of your phone turned off.

  • Try checking if the issue occurs in other locations. This is to verify if your current location is getting a weak LTE coverage or if there are any network related issues in your area.
  • Try to check if the problem is due to a glitch in the phone software by backing up your phone data then doing a factory reset. Once the reset is done check if your phone has the correct APN settings then try to go online using your mobile data.
  • Since this is a newly purchased phone try to use a different SIM and see if it gets an LTE signal.

If the problem still persists then you should have your phone checked at a service center.

S5 Mobile Data Drops When Call Comes In

Problem: I bought a verizon unlocked phone and I’m trying to use it on the AT&T network. When I’m on a call the data goes from 4G to 1x. I know verizon has advanced calling feature but I cannot use this because I don’t have a verizon Sim card. Is there a way to use data while on a call for this phone? Thanks!

Solution: Try going to the network settings and change the network mode from global to LTE/CDMA. If you are still having the same problem then make sure that the Advanced Calling/VoLTE feature is active.

S5 Not Connecting To 4G Only 3G

Problem: Will not connect at 4G LTE only 3G. Tried to verify APN settings but this phone does not have that option. I have tried factory reset, changing sim, soft reset, clearing system cache to no avail.

Solution: This is a similar issue to the one we have addressed previously. What you will need to do first is to confirm with your service provider if there are any account related issues that may be preventing you from accessing the 4G LTE network. You should also inquire if there are any network activities in your area that might be affecting the LTE connection.

Once you have this cleared out it’s time to troubleshoot the phone. Follow the steps listed below to resolve this issue. Move to the next step should the problem still occur.

  • Try to check if the issue occurs in other locations. This is to verify if your current location has a weak LTE signal.
  • Check the network mode of your phone. Make sure that it is set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect).
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
