Note 5 Cannot Send Or Receive Text Messages

Problem: I did the update this morning and since then i cannot send text messages or receive any. I have done a soft reboot, cleared cache and data but still nothing. I can do phone calls.

Solution: This looks like it’s caused by a glitch in the update process. Sometimes when the phone updates, the old software data gets left behind which then causes issues after the update has finished.

What you will want to do first in this case is to check if a third party app installed in your phone is causing the problem by starting the device in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. Try to check if you are able to send or receive a text message in this mode. If the problem does not occur then it’s most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. This will eliminate any old software data that could still be in your phone.

Note 5 Not Getting Group Text From iPhone

Problem: When in a group text with iPhones, I do not receive messages from the people with an iPhone. I get a small box that reads “No Subject” and the option to download it. When I tap to download it says “Download from [phone number]” failed. I can text iPhone users without a problem, but not when in a group text. Also, when getting a text message for an activation code (banking password change, Whatsapp activation, etc) I never receive the text. Thank you for your help and the support you provide on your website.

Solution: Regarding the issue of you not able to receive messages from iPhone users this is usually caused by the iPhone and not by your phone. Tell your friends who have iPhones to go to the Message settings of their device and make sure that the Sends as SMS option is activated. This allows the iPhone to send the message as an SMS when iMessage is unavailable.

As for the phone not receiving text messages from premium numbers follow the troubleshooting steps listed below. Move to the next step should the issue still occur.

  • Clear the cache and data of the text messaging app
  • Start your phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Check the blocked messages folder of your phone if the messages are there. To do this go to the Messages app then tap on more on the upper right side. Tap on settings then tap on block messages then blocked messages.
  • Try to enable the premium messaging feature. Go to  Settings->More->Application Manager->All tab->Messaging. Under send premium SMS choose always allow.
  • If the issue persists contact your service provider regarding this matter.

Note 5 No Notifications For Text Messages

Problem: There are no sounds/vibrations when I receive text messages. I have literally nothing installed but the stock system – I even set it not to sync my apps/settings so that I wouldn’t have a third party app giving a problem. All settings for the messaging app are fine; I’ve checked the notifications volume, the application menu, the messaging menu, you name it. I tested the phone right after reset, before doing anything but signing into my gmail account so the stock apps could update, and still no messaging notifications. This just started last week, after I got my VR Gear, which I thought was possibly the problem, but not after the complete reset – I really thought that would resolve the issue. When I test the notifications sound in the messages options I can hear it just fine. All other sounds work fine. I simply cannot get any message notifications of any kind for actual texts no matter what I do. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Solution: Since this issue occurs even right after a factory reset then there must be something wrong with the phone software. Try to check if there are any new software updates for your device and apply them accordingly. You should also try to check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode. If it doesn’t occur in this mode then it’s most likely caused by an app installed in your phone. Find out what app this is and uninstall or disable it. Start with other messaging apps that are installed in your device as this may cause a conflict with your stock messaging app.

Note 5 Messaging App Stopped Working Error After Marshmallow Update

Problem: Every since I updated to marshmallow, my stock messaging app is malfunctioning. I am not receiving all of my text, and it will close for no reason. A message will pop up and it says, unfortunately messaging has stopped working. I have cleared the cache, and wipe cache partition,  and restarted phone. Called T-mobile, they refreshed the phone to the network, still not working.

Solution: One last troubleshooting step that you have not done yet and is highly recommended in this case is a factory reset. Just make sure to backup your phone data before doing this procedure.
