Galaxy Note 4 “Unfortunately, Settings has stopped” error after an update, other issues

As we’ve said countless times in the past, OS updates do not always go as planned. Time and again, we’ve seen this statement validated when Google releases a major Android iteration. With #GalaxyNote4 devices now started receiving Marshmallow updates, numbers of update-related issues are starting to show up. Problem #1: Galaxy Note 4 “Unfortunately, Settings has stopped” error after an update

Downloaded 6.0.1 today in India on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910G). Does not seem to have many changes except the icons which are curved now. Samsung after 5.0.1 has given this update directly and nothing in between.

Features which are not visible are Settings shortcut on Lock screen, App drawer (vertical theme), Notification and quick settings, System UI tuner, dedicated google settings, Double tap to launch camera action. Notification bar is still same as 5.0.1.

One bug I noted was that when you open the application manager and try to further open any app for details there, the pop show that “Unfortunately, Settings has stopped”. This way I will not be able to clear data from the apps. This could be a big problem I suppose.

Please let me know if this bug can be fixed.

Also I have read various articles about update and new features like vertical app drawer and others as listed above.

Would be great if I could get a reply on whether I can get all the new updates with all features or is it that those will not be available on Note 4. — Sagar

Solution: Hi Sagar. Many post-update issues can be resolved by refreshing the cache partition or by doing a factory reset. As long as true cause of the issue is not due to application incompatibility, these two solutions almost always work.

First, you have to wipe the cache partition in order to ensure that the system cache build is up-to-date. Sometimes, a corrupt system cache can cause other features to not work properly. Following an update, there’s a chance that the cache partition will become disorganized, cluttered, or contain outdated and irrelevant files. While updates like Lollipop are supposed to automatically create a new cache, this does not always happen in reality. One of the main reasons why so many users are complaining about slow performance, lag, or freezing issues after updating to Lollipop is a corrupted cache partition. We think that this is also the reason for your case. If you haven’t tried clearing the cache before, here are the steps to do it:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the wiping of the cache partition is finished, highlight Reboot system now and hit the power key.

A good follow through procedure for wiping the cache partition is doing a factory reset. This will ensure a minimum number of firmware-related bugs from surfacing. Please refer to the steps below on how to factory reset your Note 4.

As regards the features that you want, their availability are determined by Google (if you have a stock Android OS) or by your wireless carrier. Some carriers may add or remove features and they don’t usually solicit user input in their decision. Whatever you see right are probably the only features you will have until a new update will modify your OS again. Contact your carrier for this specific question if you need more details.

Problem #2: Stability and performance issues on Galaxy Note 4 after Marshmallow update

My phone is Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The phone was working completely perfect once i had the 5.1.1 version, it was powering and accessing to every kind of app etc.

When i first got the update reminder for the new version, i pressed “Update” and started immediately to download the new update which is, as far as i can remember, the 6.0.1. The day after i started to feel like my phone is getting much slower and not beneficial, bugs and glitches took over my phone. if i’m not mistaken, it didn’t even respond to any activity as well as started to turn off automatically without any reason like i was literally shocked because before i updated my phone it was totally fine. so i basically think the main problem is the software which is the new version.

Needless to say I’ve tried every single step of the recovery steps that may solve the problem but unfortunately my phone didn’t come back to life and it’s still the same…

It’s been like this for like 5 days and i really need a solution for my phone, looking forward to hear from you. — Waleed

Solution: Hi Waleed. While the problems are manifested differently on your phone, the solutions we provide for Sagar above should work in your case.

Keep in mind that stability problems can also result from using or installing poorly coded or incompatible third party applications. Make sure all the things you install after a factory reset are all updated to work with Marshmallow. Otherwise, the issues will remain and render a factory reset useless.

For reference, these are the steps to do a factory reset:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight wipe data / factory reset and press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight Yes — delete all user data using the Volume Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, highlight Reboot system now and hit the Power key.
  • The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 4 boot normally or to recovery mode

Originally the phone quit on a friend of mine, after she was told that her warranty was up. She bought a newer phone. I am not convinced that it can’t be fixed. So i bought a new battery for the phone which got me some power, from there i put it to download mode and put on TWRP as a custom back up. From there i put a custom ROM on the SD card and tried to boot up into recovery and the phone is acting up like it was originally. The phone won’t turn on every time. When i does it, it goes into a download mode and gives me a message that the firmware upgrade encountered a problem, try to connect to kies and start recovery mode. Kies won’t even recognize the device and I checked for the drivers and they are fine. So without Kies and the phone being able to connect, how am i supposed to try to recover?

P.s. I have also tried countless Youtube videos that suggest downloading the firmware and use Odin to reflash. however when i do get the phone on and connect it to odin it almost never works. The messages i get are flash read failure, and sometimes no PIT partition. IM confused to say the least lol. Thank you for any info in advance

After rooting the device and adding TWRP as a custom back-up, and A custom rom that I downloaded i got the phone. — Kyle

Solution: Hi Kyle. The solutions we provide in this blog are limited to software troubleshooting. If the device does not turn on properly, there’s little to nothing that we can do about that in terms of a software fix. The device’s bootloader may have been corrupted during a modification process, which causes the entire boot process to fail. If this is the case, the device is as good as gone.

Any other “advanced” software troubleshooting are not shared by Samsung publicly and may not be easy to find online. If you don’t have much time to invest in looking for more solutions online, we suggest that you simply have the device replaced for convenience.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 4 keeps vibrating even after a call has ended

Recently my Galaxy Note 4 has started vibrating continuously after a phone call is answered. It will not stop vibrating until I reboot the phone even when the call is ended. I also had problems with my screen not timing out and turning back on after it had been manually timed out.

I have already wiped the cache partition through the recovery and still had the issues. Then I performed a factory reset and am still having the same issues. I am not sure what to do. I’m running Android 5.0.

The only app solution that I have that would affect phone calls is trueCaller and zedge. I have had no issues with these applications in the past but recently my phone is acting very strange after the most recent AT&T update! It has even started to tell me the dock is connected when I plug it into the charger. It also gives me messages about power sharing and asking me to download Samsung power sharing application to share power with other devices when my phone is connected to the charger.

After the factory reset I have not seen the dock is connected or power sharing notifications! Please help I do not know what to do.

I’ve gone into my settings and turn off the vibrate when ringing. The phone then does not vibrate but I would prefer my phone to vibrate when I receive phone calls since it is usually in my pocket. I would really appreciate your help I don’t know what else to do I have tried everything. — Chris

Solution: Hi Chris. A third party app is most likely to blame for your problems. You can either boot the phone in safe mode, or do another round of factory reset then observe the phone without any apps to see the difference. We suggest that you do the latter though you can also try booting in safe mode first. Booting Galaxy Note 4 in safe mode will temporarily disable all third-party or download apps leaving pre-installed ones and core services running. This procedure can help you determine which of your apps is causing a problem.

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  • When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  • Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Problem #5: Can files be moved to SD card or PC if a Note 4 does not boot properly?

Hello. My Device is unable to turn on. It gives the error above in addition to other errors like “com.android.phone has stopped”, “Google Play has stopped” and a Whole lot of others. I push OK and more like the above come up with different apps and processes that has stopped working. If it gets to the error, S suggest has stopped working, i can’t go further.

I have tried it in Safe mode, rebooted it after clearing partition Cache all to no avail. My Last resort is to perform a Factory reset. Which brings me to My question.

Is there a way to back up my phone data to the SD card in the phone or another storage form if I can’t even turn my phone on and get past the accessibility initial set up? It always stops when i try to enter My google info and it stays on the screen that says this may take a Few minutes, and never gets past it. Thank you much! — Chuck

Solution: Hi Chuck. If your phone still powers on, try to connect it to a computer via a USB cable instead so you can see if you can move your personal files that way. If your computer can detect your phone and will be permitted to access the memory, then you can start transferring your files to it. Otherwise, you’re really in a hard spot as there’s no other way to create a backup when your Note 4 fails to boot up normally.
