Hi there. I just read this post http://thedroidguy.com/2015/05/how-to-fix-freezing-lag-slow-performance-problems-on-samsung-galaxy-s5-part-1-107191 and while I don’t really experience any of the issues outlined in your article, I do experience a weird locking out/freezing annoyance when I play Visual Voice Mail.
I have Verizon and I’m not sure if the visual voicemail app is a Verizon thing or a Samsung thing. It is not the pro version.
Whenever I press play on a new message, it starts to play but as soon as I put the phone to my ear to listen, it stops the playback, then locks up the screen. It takes a few seconds before I can actually swipe my unlock code to unlock the screen again and then press play. The 2nd time around it always works. This happens every single time, not occasionally.
I am wondering if it’s a glitch between the app and the swipe phone lock I have turned on?

Solution: Hi Marianne. Visual Voice Mail is a Verizon app. A Galaxy S6 user mentioned an issue regarding Visual Voice Mail not installing properly in this post but appeared to have been resolved after installing a Verizon update. If you haven’t updated your operating system or Visual Voice Mail app itself lately, make sure that you do.
If an update won’t fix the problem, try to clear the app’s cache and data by following these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Applications.
- Tap Manage Applications.
- Tap the All tab.
- Look for the problem app and tap it.
- From there, you will see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
Clearing the app’s data means deleting all app-related information including your messages. Make sure you backup your important messages before you proceed.
You can also try to clear the system cache to see any difference.
This troubleshooting step is usually recommended if you have updated a device to another operating system version or if the phone is having some weird glitches. Despite not having installed the full set of new operating system files, we suggest the you do the following steps to erase possibly corrupted cache on your device:
- Turn the phone off.
- Press and hold the following buttons together: Power, Volume Up and Home.
- Release the buttons once the Android system recovery menu appears.
- Use the Volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option.
- Press the Power button to confirm selection.
- Select Reboot System Now option after deleting the cache. Wait for the phone to reboot.
If nothing appears to work, make sure to call Verizon and ask for direct assistance.
Can’t interlace text message with emoji. Only change was a recent upgrade to Verizon g900vvru2bpb1. Before issue, no problems using Samsung Messages app.
Appears (don’t know exactly precise time frame) that after the software upgrade, can no longer use emoji within a text message; the emoji window does not pop (tapping the smiley) while the text window is open. Once the text window i closed, then tapping the smiley pops the emoji window.
On the Samsung messages app, there does not appear to be any setting to emoji….or even the capability to reinstall the Samsung Messages app. — Dennis
Solution: Hi Dennis. The first thing that you must do is to delete the cache partition of your phone. This is the first thing you must do if you encounter multiple issues after an update. The cache partition is a special part of your storage device that keeps frequently used app and data components.
Clearing the cache partition will not delete any personal data so it’s perfectly safe to do. Your device will automatically create a new cache as you continue using it.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
If nothing changes after refreshing the cache partition, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset. Factory reset is a recommended potential fix when it comes to solving update issues. Sure it’s demanding and a hassle but it gives your device a much needed respite. Kindly refer to the steps below on how to do it.
Long before I installed any new apps, my phone would freeze when in use. I could be texting someone or simply trying to open the app drawer after it restarts and it just stops responding and restarts. So after it restarts I’ll turn it off and when I do this the touch keys at the bottom stay on and so does the LED for a few minutes. When they finally turn off I turn the phone back on and even then it is still sluggish.
I’m not sure what it is because I’ve tried uninstalling apps and reinstalling and it keeps doing the same thing. Once I took the battery out of the phone and the yellow sprint screen stayed on for about a minute.
I haven’t tried a hard reset. I tried a soft reset but it disables all my apps on the SD card.
The Gallery also doesn’t work most of the time. It’ll freeze and either restart the phone or crash most of the time. In which case I’ve had to install a third party app for the gallery. I’m not sure what it is so if you could help that would be great! Thanks 🙂 — Ariel
Solution: Hi Ariel. It’s normal for an Android phone to briefly freeze when trying to open apps, but when the symptom happens randomly, that may suggest an entirely different story. A good thing to do first though is to ensure that the system cache is up-to-date. A cluttered or corrupted cache partition can result to freezing, unresponsiveness, locking up, or slowness. Make sure that you wipe the cache partition by following the steps above.
In some cases, freezing can be attributed to a faulty SD card. Try to turn off the phone then remove the SD card to see the difference. If that won’t fix the issue, it would be good if you can do a factory reset. Provided that hardware is fine, a factory reset should fix this issue.
Resetting an S5 to its factory settings is the fastest way to delete everything on the phone as well as a great troubleshooting step if you encounter an issue that may appear hard to resolve. It’s also a great way to get rid of annoying, rogue, or troublesome apps fast. Whatever your reason is, you’ve come to the right post as we give you options how to reset an S5 back to its original state.
As a precaution, please ensure that the battery has been fully charged and you have created a back-up copy of your data before you proceed.
- Power down the Galaxy S5.
- Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
- Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
- Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
- Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
- When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Should nothing change after doing the procedures above, you can assume that there must be a hardware problem behind the trouble. Be sure to have the phone checked by Samsung so it can be repaired and/or replaced.
I got an OTA update on my Samsung Galaxy SM-G906S few days before. I downloaded and installed the updates. after installation my phone re-started several times and hanged even. finally it got stable and was working normally. after a week it went into boot loop on its own.
i tried to enter in recovery mode but failed to get in. Later on, i connected it to a laptop and used KIES emergency firmware which was successfully completed with no errors at all but phone was same at boot loop. Then i downloaded an official firmware from www.sammobile.com and flashed with ODIN but same boot loop. i tried TWRP RECOVERY and PHILZ RECOVERY but same at boot loop.
Whenever i have flashed my mobile with ODIN or KIES it is always successful with no error but boot loop is always there in the startup.
i can’t go in recovery mode, just download mode only.
Secondly after flashing firmware it says recovery booting in blue color and restart again and again.

Solution: Hi Hammad. Bootloop issue is mainly a result of existing system files interfering with each other after modifying a device’s operating system. The conflict between system files can cause instability and lead to crashes during boot sequence. If you managed to install either TWRP recovery or Philz Recovery, then you should be able to go to recovery mode. That’s the main reason why you install these custom recovery in the first place!
Once you are in recovery mode, make sure to wipe the Dalvik-cache. Doing so is effective in dealing with bootloop problems in most cases. If that won’t work, we doubt if there’s anything more that you can do. You can try using ADB as a solution but the process in itself is pretty convoluted. Kindly search Google for instruction how to use ADB to fix a bootloop issue.
Not all bootloop cases are recoverable. If bootloop remains even when booting in custom recovery mode, you must be one of the unfortunate ones who bricked their phones permanently.
Hi. A week and a half ago, I bought a SM-G900FD UAE firmware and I am currently roaming in Italy with T-Mobile US SIM. My network mode was set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto and worked fine. And a week later it says emergency call only.
I found that now my phone only works if i set it to GSM only mode on “E” connection. And when i change the modes it will sometimes say at the bottom of the screen “currently unable to download. Please try again later”.
I tried local SIMs and they work the same. Meanwhile on my other S5 (SM-G900T) the T-Mobile SIM gets 3G/4G LTE. I’ve done a factory reset 3 times. Samsung USA referred me to Samsung UAE, and UAE said I’ll have to send the phone there for them to look at it. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Solution: Hi Dima. Calling Samsung will not work as the problem appears network-related. Assuming that your S5’s hardware is compatible with the network you are using in Italy, which means that it can work with your network’s frequency, there must be some other problem on their side that results to your device being unable to use other modes. You need to contact the wireless carrier to check if there’s anything that you must change under your phone’s network settings so that it can be properly provisioned. And just to be on the safe side, try to ask them if your phone’s hardware is compatible with their system.
T-Mobile uses GSM technology so it shouldn’t have major difficulty in connecting to other GSM networks in Europe. If you want to use your T-Mobile SIM card there, make sure to also contact T-Mobile technical support to see if roaming is fully supported in the area where you’re at.
Stuck on red Verizon screen at boot – desperately need some files from phone:
Our Samsung Galaxy S5 is suddenly stuck on the red Verizon screen during the boot process. It is the first time this is happening to this phone. The battery died and after recharging it, the problem appeared. I am not sure if something was going on in the background when the phone died.
The phone is not modified, no root or anything has been applied. The phone is on a recent Lollipop version.
I wiped the cache partition via recovery.
I took the battery out and tried again.
I tried to reboot via (Volume down + power button).
I also tried to see if I could access the phone via ADB. When I boot into recovery (I am on the Android system recovery screen with the different options) and try to connect it to my PC via USB the device is not listed (ADB devices).
Is there any way to retrieve the data or reset the system files without losing personal files? — Andrej
Solution: Hi Andrej. Looks like you’ve already tried all the possible software solutions with the exception of a full factory wipe. We know how frustrating this must be for you but there’s really nothing more that you can do at this point. You need to do a factory reset if you want the phone to boot back normally.
