How to troubleshoot Samsung Galaxy Note 5 screen problems & display issues [w/ Troubleshooting Guide]

The screen or the display is the component that allows the owner to interact with the phone and your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (#Samsung #GalaxyNote5) packs a very impressive one. While the phone is exceptionally powerful, it’s not free of problems and complaints about screen issues are among the most common we received from our readers.

Note 5 screen issues troubleshooting

In case you have issues with your phone’s screen, try this troubleshooting procedure:

Step 1: Reboot your phone – both a firmware and a hardware glitches can cause the screen to become unresponsive and more often than not, a reboot is all that’s needed to fix these glitches. So, before you actually indulge yourself into some complicated procedures, always begin your troubleshooting with a reboot.

Step 2: Boot your phone in safe mode – if the reboot didn’t fix the problem, then try booting the phone in safe mode to find out if the problem still occurs even with all third-party app and services are disabled. If so, then the problem could be in the firmware. However, if the issue was fixed in safe mode, then you can rest assured one of the apps is causing it. Find that app and uninstall it.

Step 3: Do the master reset – this procedure is used to rule out all possible firmware glitches since it brings back all the phone’s factory defaults. If the problem still remains after the reset, then it must be the hardware that has some issues. Please don’t forget to backup all your data, files, pictures, etc. as they’ll all be deleted during the process.

Step 4: Seek help from a technician – if all else fails, it’s time you sought help from a technician who can do further troubleshooting. The worst case scenario is that the display panel will be replaced as the digitizer (the component that makes touchscreen possible) and the LCD are glued together.

I hope this basic troubleshooting guide can help you.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Screen Issues

As I said earlier, here are some of the problems I included in this post. Browse through them to see if something is similar to yours and use the existing solution.

Note 5 screen doesn’t have the continuous scrolling like the S5

Problem: I have just moved from the Galaxy S5 to a Galaxy Note 5. On the S5 my home screen didn’t go just left or right but around. On my new Note 5 I can only move the screens left or right which is very upsetting because for example I have to go through all my screens to get from the far right screen to the far left one because the screen simply doesn’t go all the way around. Is there any place where I can change this setting? Thank you so much! — Amy

Answer: Hello Amy! Samsung took away this useful feature from Touchwiz starting with the S6. There’s no existing fix to it however, there’s a workaround–use a third-party launcher like Nova launcher.

Fingerprint lock reverts back to swipe even if set Fingerprint lock

Problem: I read the thread on lock screen reverting back to swipe even with fingerprint, pin, or password enabled. Mine also reverts back to swipe, no other lock screen security can be enabled, other than none. I DO NOT have smart lock enabled. Help please. And thank you!

Answer: This must be the post you’ve read so I ask you to read to other post I wrote dealing the same issue. If these solutions aren’t applicable to you, then I suggest you boot your phone in safe mode to troubleshoot further:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
  5. When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.

If the problem, then it’s time you did the master reset to bring the phone back to its factory defaults. However, you need to backup all your files and data first so as not to lose them.

How to do master reset on Note 5

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Note 5 screen unresponsive in the top-left corner

Problem: I was reading this article and I noticed someone had the same issue as I. Unresponsive display in the top left hand corner. I have a T-Mobile Note 5. I’ve never dropped it or exposed it to water. It is brand new out the box. I’ve had this phone for about two months now.

Troubleshooting: This problem has also been happening to other Galaxy devices and not just with the Note 5. While we always suspected it has something to do with the screen itself being defective, we were wrong. In fact, this problem can be solved easily and the culprit is the Facebook Messenger app. Try disabling or uninstalling it and the problem will be fixed. We are yet to investigate further why it’s happening.

Note 5 says widget is already added to the Home screen

Problem: I would like to add more large  weather widgets on all of the home screens but I get a  message that states “the weather widget has already been added to the home screen.”  I have a Galaxy Note 5 and I am not able to do this whereas I was able to do this on my Note 4.  What gives?

Related Problem: I currently have the Note 5 and I am trying to add the 5×1 weather widget to another home screen but a message comes up that says ” the widget has already been added to the home screen.”  Is there a way to work around this? I was able to do this with my Note 4.

Answer: If you already added the widget to one of your Home screens, then you can not add it to other Home screens. It’s not possible with Touchwiz now but try using Go Launcher Ex, you can do almost everything you want with that launcher.

Note 5 touchscreen stopped responding, screen responds to S Pen only

Problem: Touch screen of my Galaxy Note 5 recently stopped responding to finger touch.  Its response to the S Pen  remains normal and is unaffected.  Please advise. Thanks.

Answer: The Note 5 has two different digitizers; one for the finger and one for the S Pen. It appears like the other one stopped working and the only solution to this problem, if it was really the digitizer that has a problem, is to replace the display panel. You can claim warranty for this kind of problem. However, try doing the master reset before you contact a technician. Just follow the steps above.

Add owner information on Note 5’s lock screen

Problem: I recently switch to a Note 5 from a Galaxy S4. On the home screen of my old phone I was able to customize the home screen with my name on top I can’t figure out how to do that with the NOTE 5 can you please help me. Thank you so much in advance.

Answer: I think this feature is variant-dependent. There are Note 5 models that may not have it. But anyway, here’s how you add an owner’s info in your phone’s lock screen, if the feature is available:

  1. Tap on the Apps icon and tap Settings.
  2. Go to Personal section and tap Lock screen and security.
  3. Now, under Lock screen option, touch the Show information option.
  4. You should have three options: Weather, Dual clock and Owner Information.
  5. Touch Owner Information, and type your name or whatever info you want displayed when the device’s screen locks.

That’s all it!

Note 5 screen started flickering after it was dropped but got fixed

Problem: After I dropped my phone on hard floor, its screen started flickering, in between it gets ok, I attached the phone to pc with side sync and tried resetting device. After the factory reset, the flickering improved from black screen with flashes to little flickering letting me read what’s on display. I turned the brightness up to full and flickering totally disappeared. And when I bring it down, it starts flickering again. Touch fingerprint sensor and S Pen working fine. Now I don’t know if it’s software issue or hardware. If later, whether its display that is broken or the motherboard or some chip. Please help.

Answer: If the problem started immediately after the drop, then the impact should have caused it, although it wasn’t hard enough to cause serious damage. The problem may be limited to the screen because if the motherboard got affected or a chip, the phone won’t turn on.

Note 5 screen becomes unresponsive, purple hue showing

Problem: Lock screen started to get unresponsive unless you use the pen and now it’s starting to have a purple hue to the screen. Just picked up the phone 3 days ago have not even dropped it once.

Suggestion: Here’s what I think: whatever the problem is (and I think it’s really serious), you should not deal with it considering the phone is still 3 days old. Basically, you are still eligible to receive a brand new replacement unit.

But let’s say you want to deal with this problem, which I think is hardware-related, and found a temporary fix, do you want to deal with it for next two years? Or do you want to always hope that the problem won’t come back anytime soon? I hope you got my point.
