I just upgraded from a 32GB Samsung Evo card to a 64GB Samsung Pro card, in hopes I would get faster read/write speeds, i.e., faster Gallery picture loading, smoother video recording, faster SD card app loading. However, this Pro card, bought from a reliable website (BHD, or that famous photo, video website), seems much slower than the Evo card. Recording HD video is still choppy, gallery images are not loading faster, and I even use SD booster to increase the cache on the SD card to help out…
I formatted the card before using it and I’ve read other S5 users experienced much faster speeds with their Pro card…Am I doing something wrong? I’ve done several soft resets and am thinking of just wiping the phone and starting over, as I’m very frustrated, as the phone also randomly freezes as well.
I’ve uninstalled all relatively recent apps and have a lot of free memory now… So, I think the only thing left is a factory reset, or is there something else I can try? Thank you. — Justin
Solution: Hi Justin. An SD card capture speed depends on other factors. While the rated speed and class of an SD card can make a difference, a fast card cannot always guarantee faster recording or capture speed. Your phone communicates to the SD card via host controllers and they can vary in speed and compatibility. We are certain though that the Galaxy S5’s SD controller is one of the most updated and fastest in today’s electronic market.
Other factors at play includes firmware and apps you have installed. One way of comparing read and write speeds of your new SD card is to ensure that the phone runs a clean software and that can only be done by doing a factory reset first. Getting a general idea how fast your phone reads and writes to a new SD card when it’s clean is a good way to establish base speed. If you notice significant delay after installing your apps, that’s an indication that one of your apps may be messing up the SD controller or operating system.
I can’t make outgoing calls on the phone or place an outgoing text. The phone will not ring when placing a call. It just says dialing and never connects to the network. I called the carrier which is Simple Mobile. They are trying to tell me it’s the phone, and it’s not unlocked from AT&T but I unlocked it myself over a year ago and have used the phone with Simple since then.
I have Wi-Fi and can get calls and receive text just not outgoing. I have done a soft reset and removed SIM and replaced. I’m afraid if I do a factory reset it will turn it back into AT&T phone. Do you know if that’s the case, and any ideas what maybe wrong? — Angela
Solution: Hi Angela. Did you check with Simple Mobile if there are any account settings or provisioning issues that might be preventing the phone to place a call or send a text message? Only Simple Mobile can check these things so make sure that you have them taken care of before trying to troubleshoot your phone. You also have to make sure that your account has enough credits to make a call or send a text message.
Now, troubleshooting your S5 involves a few things including checking some network settings. Start by going under Settings>Applications>Settings>Call>More Settings>Caller ID and making sure that “Network default” is selected.
If this won’t help, try to manually change the network. Here’s how:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap More networks.
- Tap Mobile networks.
- Tap Network operators.
- Tap the required network after the phone searches for available networks.
We believe that the phone’s inability to place a call or send SMS are related so if you can fix the call part, the SMS issue should also be resolved. Just in case you want to troubleshoot the SMS issue though, start by checking if the phone has the correct Message Center number. Here’s how:
- Open Messages app.
- Press the menu icon.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Text messages.
- Save the message center number (make sure to ask the correct number from your carrier).
- Press Message center.
I have been having problems with my S5 since I got it. First it would shut off then keep rebooting the Samsung logo. So I looked online and it said to hold certain buttons to do a full factory reset. I also cleaned the cache and then did another full factory reset. Finally was able to get the phone to load. I updated to Lollipop and the phone keeps freezing up no matter what I’m doing like when in the web apps, text messages, phone dialer, everything. It keeps over heating even if I’m only using the phone for a few minutes. Screen goes black and takes a few min before my phone can go back on. Constantly having to hit the old menu button to close out apps before my screen will work again. — Chairty
Solution: Hi Chairty. Slow performance issue like the one you have can be caused by bad operating system, corrupt system cache, poorly-coded app, or malicious software. The first thing you want to try to narrow down the causes is by booting in safe mode. If you haven’t tried it before, these are the steps to do it:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
The purpose of booting in safe mode is to give you time to observe how the phone behaves when no third party applications are running. If the issue fails to occur in this mode, that’s a confirmation that one of your apps is the culprit. You have to uninstall apps until the issue is gone.
If the phone appears to lag, freeze, or sluggish after an Android update, you can also wipe the cache partition.
Hi there. Here is my problem: I have a fairly new Samsung S5 and I am having massive trouble with my Wi-Fi connection at home. Shows full connectivity, router is only a few feet away. 3G and 4G is working fine, only Wi-Fi is unbelievably slow. At first I thought my router
might have a problem. But the thing is: with my iPhone, my iPad and my laptop the Wi-Fi is fine. And with my Samsung I don’t have problems in other Wi-fis either. So there must be some kind of incompatibility between my Samsung phone and the router. Can you help? Would be great, cheers. — Veit
Solution: Hi Veit. Like Chairty above, your first attempt to resolution should be to see if there’s a third party app that may be causing the issue. Should nothing changes even when in safe mode, the next thing to do is to check your router settings and ensure that there is no enforced limitation on speed your S5 can get. Some home routers feature filters that include an option to throttle the speed of devices connected to it. If you are not the administrator of your device, make sure to ask the person in-charge to check this for you. If only you don’t know what to do regarding this, try to contact your internet service provider (if the router came from them) or the router manufacturer.
I started out with Samsung Galaxy S5 (Verizon) but switched carrier to T-Mobile. Thought everything went right until I found out that I could receive texts but was unable to send. (failure notice comes up).
What I first did was to do a factory reset. Then I installed a T-Mobile SIM with T-Mobile’s help – recovered my old info from Google backup.
After trouble with texting I tried everything over again. Still unable to receive texts. Brought phone into T-Mobile – phone was set properly. I then had them put in a different new SIM card and phone worked properly for an hour or two then old problem re-surfaced. Both of the SIM cards that had the problem are ones from the same batch that I have had for at least the last year. They have a date on them that says use before 2017. I asked T-Mobile if I purchased a different one from them and do they think it would work and they replied no. Not sure what to do. Do I have a bad phone or am I overlooking something? Thanks. — Ted
Solution: Hi Ted. If the phone worked fine for some time before reverting to the old problem, something must be causing it to lose the network settings to work properly with T-Mobile network. Please try to do a factory reset and observe the phone for at least 24 hours without installing any app. This will help you determine if an app is responsible. Simply follow these steps:
- Power down the Galaxy S5.
- Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
- Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
- Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
- Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
- When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Please I’m havıng problem wıth my Samsung. The network mode ıs on WCDMA/GSM, and ıt ıs been workıng perfectly. But four days ago I went to gıve a technıcıan to help me change the chargıng port of the phone sınce the port shakes whenever I’m chargıng ıt. He was unable to fıx ıt but I notıce I had my 3G network when I was goıng home but ımmedıately ı get to my compound and ınsıde the house, the 3G network disappear. I trıed every other network wıth my phone ıt ıs the same thıng ındoor but once’s I’m outsıde I’m able to receive the sıgnal. What can be the cause? Because a technıcıan told me the last person that checked my phone have tempered wıth somethıng on the mobıle network of the phone or the panel. I have checked d mobıle network cord and ıt ıs properly fıxed. I have trıed puttıng dıfferent chargıng port that ıs meant to work wıth ıt but ıt ıs not workıng wıth ıt. The problem ıs not from the servıce provıder but from the phone. What can I do. Really waıtıng for your reply. Thanks. — Olabode
Solution: Hi Olabode. Make sure you tackle a possible software issue first by doing a factory reset (steps provided above). This will ensure that the phone has a clean firmware to begin with.
We think the problem must be hardware-related though. The technician may have damaged a component or components or even the antenna. If the problem persists even after a factory reset, make sure to have the phone checked by a different technician.
