AT&T Galaxy Note 4 can’t make and receive calls on Metro PCS network, other issues

Rumors are coming in for the upcoming Galaxy Note 6 and, as expected, we are looking at some of the best in hardware technology offerings. So far, the thing that caught our attention though is the interesting rumor from a reputed source that reveals that the new Note flagship is capable of turning into a Windows machine when plugged in to a PC. True or not, such idea can be a revolutionary way towards making our digital world more awesome.

Problem #1: Galaxy Note 4 won’t power on

Greetings. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910T.  N910TUVU1ANIH  HW Rev 1.1  10/15/2014.

Recently T-Mobile did an OTA upgrade to 5.1.1 shortly thereafter I started having major issues with it.  Random reboots.  Frequently seeing the “Downloading do not turn off target” error screen repeatedly, sometimes booting up sometimes not.

I talked to T-Mobile who suggested I backup my data and try resetting the phone, so I started to do that.   As Helium and other tools didn’t backup all the data due to some apps not wanting me to, I was still in the middle of that process and hadn’t yet tried resetting or anything.

I put my phone down one night and went to bed.  When I woke up the phone wouldn’t turn back on.

Nothing I’ve done has helped. I’ve tried all the various resetting tricks with the various button combinations, taking the battery out, taking the SIM card and the SD card out, etc.

I have an external Samsung battery charger and two batteries so I know it’s not the battery. I have multiple Samsung OEM USB cables, so I know it’s not that.

No matter what I do I get no response from the screen and I do not get any of the vibrating bootup response from the power button. So there are no signs of life and nothing about it makes any sense to me.

It hasn’t gotten wet but just in case I did try to do the rice drying trick just in case something happened to it when I was asleep.

**** Here’s the only sign of life: when I plug the phone into the computer (Windows 10 at the moment) it registers the device as QHSUSB_BULK   *****

I got SkipSoft Pro for the Galaxy Note 4 so I would have a variety of tools that are easy to use.  But from everything I read it seems like I need to be able to turn on the phone to use the Odin tool.

I also downloaded other tools.  Read lots of webpages on the subject,  tried talking to a few people in various IRC channels, etc. etc. etc.  I’m fairly tech savvy but not terribly smartphone savvy (this is only my second.) This is … exceedingly frustrating.

Solution: Hi Michael. If you’ve tried all hardware button combinations for a Samsung device, chances are the issue is not software related at all. As a rule of thumb, if an Android device has a software problem, one of possible button combinations should at least work if you try to boot it up. That means that there’s really nothing that we can do at this point since we cannot even boot the phone up in the first place.

If your Note 4 is still covered by a repair warranty, we suggest that you have it physically checked for damage. Sometimes, the power button can fail for no apparent reason so make sure to mention that to a technician during repair.

If you want to replace the button yourself, we’re pretty sure that there are a few online resources that you use for guidance. The power button itself can cost somewhere between $6-12 dollars depending on the color and retailer.

Problem #2: AT&T Galaxy Note 4 can’t make and receive calls on Metro PCS network

Able to connect to the Internet, able to receive and send SMS. Yet I can’t make calls. Call drops abruptly  and sometimes it happens as I dial the number.

Metro PCS and 4G LTE  logo are on the top of the screen but as soon as I dial any number they disappear  and “out of service area” message shows up and call drops.

Metro PCS seem incapable of solving the problem. Since I switched my number to this phone I’ve not been able to make  and receive single call.

I love  this phone and I don’t want to do away with it. It was a AT&T unlocked phone. But I prefer to stay with Metro PCS.

Any help please. — Cecil

Solution: Hi Cecil. The cause of the problem may either be a glitch in the operating system, or network- or account-related. We know that AT&T Galaxy Note 4s are equipped to handle the frequency bands below:

2G GSM : 850/900/1800/1900;

3G WCDMA : Band I/Band II/Band V;

4G (LTE Cat 4 150/50Mbps) : B2 / B4 / B5 / B12 / B17

On the other hand, Metro PCS operates on these bands:

700 MHz (LTE band 12)

1900 MHz (LTE band 2) – 3G/4G (PCS/EVDO/LTE)

1700/2100MHz (LTE band 4) – 3G/4G (HSPA/HSPA+/LTE)

Basing on these basic information, we can see that your Note 4 should be able to use 4G LTE network for both cellular and data connection. We know that LTE network of some carriers can’t handle voice calls so they simply route them to their 2G or 3G networks. We’re not sure if this is true for Metro PCS LTE network. If it is, then that’s the reason why you can’t receive and make calls at all. To put simply, either the phone’s hardware isn’t compatible with Metro PCS/T-Mobile network, or there’s a network glitch that automatically kick your device out of the system everytime you try to dial a number.

We know it can be frustrating to work with technical support representatives especially if the initial contact was not fruitful but the only party that can shed light on this issue is Metro PCS itself. It’s their responsibility to give you the specifics why your calls are not going through.

We don’t think there’s something in your phone that prevents calls from being made.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 4 black screen issue

Hi. I need your urgent advice. My Note 4 SM-N910G (network is Singapore Starhub) is rooted with Kingroot and I have been using it for a year already. No issue so far until recently after updates, my screen has turned black suddenly.

When I power on the phone, I still can hear it running and the LCD light is blinking but the screen is black. So I doubt it is battery issue right?

I am unable to do a hard factory reset by pressing the Home+Power+Vol up button together. I am also unable to enter into Odin Mode too. It is all showing a black screen but there is vibration when I pressed the buttons so the phone is still fine, only not sure what has happened. Is it LCD issue?

Can I use Odin to flash original firmware by going into Odin Mode even though it is not showing on phone screen? Will it work that way? Please advise urgently, thanks. — Wendy

Solution: Hi Wendy. Our troubleshooting options are limited if you cannot see anything on the phone screen. We obviously cannot perform recovery mode tasks or flash a firmware in Odin mode if the screen is black. Try having the phone checked physically as this might be a display failure.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 4 freezes and shows black and white screen when playing games

My screen keeps hanging when playing Need for Speed, Asphalt 8 or when listening to songs at TTpod. Yesterday my screen shows half black and half white suddenly and when i power off and on, it went black screen but LCD light, sound and everything is working. My Note 4 is rooted. I have cleared cache, factory reset and downloaded some small apps like soda crush saga, real-time calculator, converter, updates for WhatsApp, Gmail, Google Map, Drive, Android view (not sure what is this but seems to be meant for system).

After factory reset, last attempt was to transfer back TTPod (scan by malware and claimed to have issues all along) and soda crush. Thereafter, i take out the S-Pen, again it happened, black and white screen. Thinking that it is TTpod causing such issue (which I wonder why since I have this app for many months already, no such thing happened previously), I factory reset once again without the TTpod app but with candy crush soda. Today again black and white screen. I know you have mentioned on how to soft reset to check which software causing this issue. Can I get a step by step guide? What other alternative can I use? Please help. — Fil

Solution: Hi Fil. The best thing that you can do to check if a third party app is to blame for the problem is by booting in safe mode. Here’s how:

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  • When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  • Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Make sure to observe the phone for a day or two while in safe mode to really see the difference. If the issue fails to occur, that’s a confirmation that one of your apps is indeed the culprit.

Problem #5: Facebook Messenger app problem after updating Galaxy Note 4

I updated my phone last week with the push update that came from Android by choosing update now. Ever since the latest update I have not been able to use Facebook Messenger free calling. I can make a call, but the person whom I am calling cannot answer up my phone call. When I receive a call in Facebook Messenger I get a message saying can’t connect and I am unable to answer the call. My Wi-Fi signal is strong my battery is charged, I did a hard reboot and a soft reboot. Nothing worked. The person to whom I making phone calls also has Android, but I’m not sure what version. It’s a new Galaxy. I used Facebook Messenger free calling in the past 4 over a year with no problems. This just started happening. I am able to use messenger to send messages and I am also able to receive messages with no problem. Please help. — Erica

Solution: Hi Erica. If the problem happened after an update, you must wipe the cache partition and try to re-install the app. These are the steps on how to delete the cache partition:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the wiping of the cache partition is finished, highlight Reboot system now and hit the power key.

If wiping the cache partition won’t change anything, simply re-install Facebook Messenger.

Problem #6: Galaxy Note 4 battery drain due to cold temperature

Thank you in advance for taking the time to review the issue that I am having with my Samsung Note 4. About a month ago, the phone was left in the car at night where the temperatures dropped down below freezing. When I went to get the phone from the car the phone screen would not turn on, but the blue light flashed indicating that I had a message. Pushing all buttons possible, holding them down, different sequences, the screen would not turn on.  It wasn’t until I pulled the battery and put the battery back in before the screen turned back on. It happened again when my wife and I were playing in the snow and it was in a pocket.  I had to pull the battery for longer than 30 seconds in order for the phone to regain life.  Is there something with cold temperatures and battery issue? Please advise. — Brent

Solution: Hi Brent. The recommended storage temperatures of Lithium-based batteries should be around 15°C (59°F). It’s not unheard of though of Galaxy Note 4 being used in colder climates like Canada or Norway all year round without problems so we know that the battery can live through lower temperatures for extended periods. In general, lithium-ion batteries are like humans — they function better in room temperature. Temperature extremes must be avoided if possible. Warmer environment is usually recommended for optimum battery performance though. Cold temperature lowers battery capacity and prolonged exposure can hasten battery drain. Lower temperature can significantly increase internal resistance causing a huge drop in capacity. This is the reason why your Note 4’s battery may have completely drained itself after leaving it inside a freezing car overnight.

We suggest that you warm the battery up first before using after it was exposed to cold temperature for some time.
