S4 Has A Black Screen

Problem: My Galaxy S4 has a black screen I believe is referred to as the “Black Screen of Death.” I read one of your articles but removing the battery and holding the power button for several minutes then reinserting the battery doesn’t work. I know that the phone is on though because the hardware buttons glow and the LED at the top glows when plugged in. I had cyanogenmod 11 installed but  it had been installed for several months before this happened. The phone wasn’t dropped or anything, the incident seems to have come out of nowhere. Any suggestions?

Solution: Try accessing the recovery mode of your phone then see if you can do a factory reset from there. Take note that this will delete all data stored in your phone so only do this if you are willing to lose your phone data.

If the phone can’t access the recovery mode then you should consider flashing your phone software as this issue could be caused by a corrupt software.

If flashing the phone software does not resolve the issue then this may already be a hardware related problem. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Black Screen

Problem: Phone was working yesterday – only used  it to make a few calls.  I think I left it at around 60% battery charge..  This morning, the screen was black.  I thought it was  a dead battery, plugged it in, and could see that little light that indicates its plugged in.  charged it for a bit -still nothing.  Tried the power button a few times, nothing, but I could tell the phone was turning on because the tune it makes when turning on.  Used my hubby’s phone to call my phone – my phone rang, but I couldn’t answer it. Pulled out the battery, put it back in.   No change. Hubby has the exact same phone, so we switched batteries, still  no change. I’m reluctant to do the hard reset as mentioned on several sites.  Do you have any suggestions before i do this? thanks.

Solution:  Since the phone can still accept calls then the problem here is that the display is not working. The best way to proceed in this scenario is to first check if the issue is a software problem by trying to access the recovery mode of the phone. If you can access the recovery mode then you should wipe the cache partition of your device. If this doesn’t resolve the issue then your last option is to do a factory reset from the recovery mode. Take note that this will delete your phone data so only do this is you have recently made a backup of your phone data or if you are willing to lose your phone data.

If your phone can’t access the recovery mode then the problem is most likely caused by a damaged display. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Screen Is Blank

Problem: Screen is blank.  Phone boots (blue LED, intro music) but does not display anything.  I believe the problem is related to the light sensor for auto screen brightness…… here’s why.I was able to get the phone working with a very dim screen along with some flickering and gradually it was getting brighter.   When I moved the phone close to a light bulb, the screen went blank immediately.  After a minute or so, the display tried to brighten (and flickers as well) but now after a soft reboot, the screen is blank.  Touch works OK (I can swipe and unlock) but still nothing displays (bottom left menu ‘key’ and bottom right ‘return’ key light up and work OK…..as far as I can tell). Is there a way to check hardware regarding the light sensor on the phone?  Any other info/advice would be helpful.  Thanks!

Solution: To access the general test mode of the phone just type *#0*# from the keypad. If a hardware component fails in this test then your best option is to bring the phone to an authorized service center and have it repaired.

S4 Screen Is Black

Problem: My screen is black, I finally can hear the AT&T “”boot up music””and an incoming call, the back button lights up and the blue light flashes but the screen is black. I have tried charging, taking battery and and card out. Help!

Solution: This problem is very likely caused by a faulty phone display. You should however check if other factors are involved, such as the phone software. To do this you need to start your phone in recovery mode. If your phone can access the recovery mode then I suggest you do a factory reset. Take note that this will delete your phone data. If your phone can’t access the recovery mode then this is most likely a hardware related issue. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Black Screen With Green Stripe

Problem: I had dropped my phone very badly and wrecked the screen. It still responded but the screen didn’t work. I brought it in and had the screen replaced. That was almost 2 weeks ago. Today I was using my phone and when I turned the screen back on it was black, with a tiny green stripe going across the very top. Each time I tried to turn the screen back on the green lines would move further down the screen. But not super consistently. Sometimes more than others, and sometimes it’ll do nothing. I tried some of the suggestions in previous posts, like getting it to safe mode, but i usually can’t read any of the words. Sometimes when I power it back on I’ll see the Samsung logo behind the green lines. One time I did see “Warning!!” at the top of the screen but could read nothing else.

Solution: Try to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. If the problem still occurs right after the factory reset then this is most likely caused by the display. You should bring your phone to an authorized service center and have the phone checked. It is possible that you will need to have the display replaced again.

S4 Screen Goes Black

Problem: Screen goes black, except bar at top with Time, battery life, internet connection, etc. stays on, rest of screen is black.  Only way to get it back is to restart phone.  Intermittent, can’t pinpoint why/what is causing.  Original phone, no repairs/replacements, etc.  This just started to happen around early December.

Related Problem: I turn on my phone it will work for maybe a minute or less than the screen turns black and will restarts and will repeat stay on for less than a minute then screen turns black. please help. Thanks

Solution: If the problem disappears after you restart your phone this could be a software related issue. Start the troubleshooting by wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. This clears out the temporary data of your device. Restart your phone then check if the problem still occurs. If it does then the next thing to do is to check if a third party app is causing the problem. To do this you need to start your phone in Safe Mode then check if the problem occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it is most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the above troubleshooting steps fail then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S4 Screen Went Black

Problem: The screen went black when I was watching a youtube video and won’t do anything.I have done the soft reset but it still is black it has not been dropped at all and is brand new. Nothing pops up when starting it yet I can tell it is on I can not do anything with my phone please help.

Solution: Check if you can access the recovery mode of your phone. If you can then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone. This will clear out the temporary data stored in your phone that could be causing this problem. Restart the phone then check if the problem disappears. If it doesn’t then you will need to access the recovery mode again and do a factory reset. Take note that this will delete all data stored in your phone.

If the above troubleshooting steps fail then this may already be a hardware related issue. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
