As more apps are installed on a smartphone and several files are stored in it its storage capacity decreases. There will come a time when there is no more storage space available to store music or photos on the device. The good thing is that the #Samsung Galaxy #S4 has a microsD card slot which allows for the easy expansion of its storage. You will be able to expand the storage of this device by up to 64GB eliminating low storage problems.
One problem that occurs in this case is that the data on the microSD card is not accessible by the phone. This is what we will be dealing with today as we aim to resolve the Galaxy S4 not able to access data on the microSD card. We have gathered several issues of this nature that our readers have sent us and have provided the best possible troubleshooting steps below.

S4 Not Able To Access Data On microSD Card
Problem: First thank you for your time. Model number SM-G900V with Android version 5.0. I recently updated my software and I was not able to access any of my music files that are on my SanDisk Ultra 64GB Microsdxc card. I was however able to access my photos and videos from my SD card at this point. About a week later I was not able to access anything from my SD card. At this point I pulled the SD card from my phone for the first time and put the card in an adapter and I was able to access everything on a computer. The prongs on the phone look good from what I can see and with the case I am using there should not be an issue with dirt getting between the prongs and SD card. Is my only choice to take the data off the card and then reformat the card in the phone then reinstall all the data back on the SD card?
Solution: If the computer can access the data stored in the card then the issue could be with the phone. Sometimes a software glitch can cause this kind of issue so I suggest you try to start your phone in recovery mode first then wipe its cache partition. Once this is done reinsert the microSD card then check if the issue still occurs.
If the issue still occurs then check if an app installed in your phone is causing this problem. This can easily be done by starting your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. If the issue does not occur in this mode then it is very likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail then I suggest you now proceed with backing up the data stored in the microSD card then reformat it.
S4 Can’t Write To microSD Card
Problem: Inability to write on my ad sd card leading to memory shortage. …the reason I got this phone was the lack of ram on my Kyocera. I am extremely upset and disappointed that I have yet to tap the potential of my smart phone, since I have had my first galaxy. . I would understand if i upgraded and got the phone discounted or free, but that is not the case. I bought this phone outright
Solution: One of the main reasons why a phone can’t write on the microSD card is that the card itself is defective. Try taking out the card and use another microSD card on your phone. Make sure that the card has a capacity of 64GB or less.
If the issue still occurs even with another microSD card inserted in your phone then the problem could be caused by the phone software. Try to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset has completed check if you are now able to write data on the phone.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail then this issue could be caused by a hardware problem. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
S4 Retrieving Photos From microSD Card
Problem: I have a 128GB micro card with 18000+ pics. It’s been working fine. My battery started to drain very fast just a few days ago and the phone seemed to slow down. I went to app mgr and tried to force close lollipop to see if this was the culprit. All of sudden my home screen changed and my phone does not read my micro sd card with all of my pics. Is it possible to retrieve the pics? Most were of my family.
Solution: You can try to take out the microSD card and let your computer read it. You will need a card reader to do this. If the card can be detected by your computer then you will be able to copy the photos stored in it. If the card can’t be accessed by your computer then try using some software recovery tools to recover the data in the card. While this does not usually work most of the time it’s best to give it a shot. Try to read the issue one of our readers has experienced below to get an in idea on how to deal with this problem.
S4 Restoring Corrupted microSD Card
Problem: I just read your article about samsung s4 memory card issues. I’ve had problems with my phone and sd card for a long time. On the android forums i see people with the same problem which leaves me to believe that this is a manufacturer defect. I run a battery pack and have 3 batteries that i swap out. I’ve learned that if i don’t let the phone power down completely before pulling the battery this can cause sd card problems. Either phone wont read the card and needs to be power cycled and card inserted. Or card can be corrupted. Or i’ve seen the phone randomly corrupt the sd card. First time this happened to me i figured my data was lost and replaced the card. The 2nd time i dug a little deeper and found some software by HP that can repair SD cards. It took about 8 passes thru the software to fix the card but it did it. I got all my information back and fixed the card. The samsung s4 is a sd card killer. And i still have issues with this to this day. Just thought id share this information about the hp software for repairing sd cards. I don’t remember the exact name of the software but it’s available right off their website. This is a good method if u dont want to replace your expensive 64gb sd card
Solution: Thanks for sharing this information which I’m sure most of our readers will find useful. While there are several data recovery software available only a few of them can do a good job. Sometimes you will have to use several data recovery software before finding one that works for your particular case.
S4 Can’t Access Data In microSD Card
Problem: I turned off my phone yesterday and when I turned it back on all the apps were grayed out and had sd next to it. The pics and music on sd card also not functioning. When I go to application manager all the apps are there, BUT all say 0.00B and are grayed out. If I click on an app it says app not installed. Not exactly sure what happened or how to fix problem. Thanks
Solution: It’s possible that the microSD card may already be corrupt. Try taking out the card first and check if it can be read by your computer. You will need a card reader to do this. If even your computer can’t read the card then it’s most likely corrupt already. You can try to recover the data in the card by using some data recovery software or you can just get a new microSD card.
If the computer can read the microSD card then the issue is most likely caused by your phone. Before inserting the microSD card back to your phone wipe its cache partition first from the recovery mode. Make sure to insert the microsD card in its proper orientation.
