S5 Screen Froze
Problem: Hello! I was using my phone as normal when all of a sudden my screen froze. The screen was on but no swiping or buttons would work, even the lock button. I removed the battery and rebooted the phone. Immediately after the phone got back to the fingerprint screen, it did the same thing. This continued to happen. Sometimes I could log in before it froze, sometimes it would freeze on the carrier screen. After trying suggestions on your site to no avail, including booting in safe mode, I removed the sd card. Suddenly my phone worked perfectly. Up to this point I have had no problems or errors with the sd card. Do you have any error checks or suggestions to try before reformatting the card? I have a lot of apps and pictures that I would like to avoid losing/recovering if possible. Thank you!
Solution: A corrupted microSD card can cause a phone to freeze since the device will have a hard time accessing the data stored in the card. While the usual method to resolve this problem is to reformat the card you can still try to fix the corrupt sectors in the card without formatting it thus allowing you to retain your data.
To do this you will need to remove the card from your phone and connect it to a computer running on Windows.
Open command prompt ( click on Start then on the search bar type “cmd”. Right click on cmd then click on run as administrator). You will then see a black window on your screen where you can type some commands.
Verify what drive letter the microSD is assigned to by going to My Computer then check the microSD card drive letter.
Going back to the command prompt window type in “chkdsk” hit the spacebar then type your card’s drive letter followed by a colon hit the spacebar then type “/f”. If the microSD drive is E then what you type should look like this “chkdsk e: /f”. Hit enter.
Wait for your computer to detect and fix the corrupt sectors in the card.
S5 Freezes At Samsung Logo
Problem: Hello, I’m hoping that you can help me with the problem I’m facing with my phone. I have tried the methods on this site to reboot my phone, but all have proved to be unsuccessful. I have went into the recovery mode and wiped the partition cache and I’ve even done a factory reset with no luck. My phone turns on but it always freezes at the samsung logo. I appreciate the assistance and I hope that you can help me. Thank you.
Solution: Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If it does then try removing it as this may also be a factor that can cause this problem.
If the issue persists then you should consider manually flashing your phone firmware. You will need a copy of your phone firmware as well as the latest version of Odin installed in your computer. Instructions on how to perform this procedure can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.
S5 Randomly Freezes After Downloading Lollipop Update
Problem: I just downloaded the Lollipop updates and ever since, my device has been running slower. it randomly freezes every 2 minutes and my messages are not sending. Also, when I have a text message conversation open, the text message notification is silent when I receive a new text message. It does this when it is on vibrate and sound. When I close the conversation, my sound notification works. Some of the emoticons are also blocked, as in they won’t display as an emoticon but a big X. Is there any way we can go back to the older version? I’ve had less problems and I definitely don’t want this update anymore.
Solution: This problem is most likely caused by the old software data of our phone that has not been completely removed during the update process. What happens is that this old data is causing a conflict with the new software version which results in these issues that your phone is experiencing.
The best way to resolve this problem is to first start your phone in recovery mode then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your device. Restart your phone then check if the issues still occur.
If the problem still persists then you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S5 Widgets Freeze
Problem: I have a problem where my widgets such as the time and recent apps widgets freeze. I’ve tried to restart the phone by taking out the battery and holding in the power button for 10 seconds etc. But nothing has worked. Now that I started my device in safe mode , my widgets seem to respond normally (this shows that a third party app is causing the problem, but I’m having trouble figuring out which of the third party apps is causing this problem. Please can you assist.
Solution: Do you remember the last app that you installed before this problem occurred? That app may be causing the problem.
If you can’t recall the last app you installed then you will have to do a trial and error method in finding out what app is causing the problem. Uninstall one app then check if the problem occurs. Repeat this procedure until the issue does not occur. The last app you uninstalled could be the cause of the problem.
If all else fails then you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S5 Freezes When Typing
Problem: When typing I can enter a word then I have to hit any key twice because it’s locked up. It won’t flow, after a key is entered it freezes and won’t respond so I’ve been tapping space twice after every word.
Solution: There’s a big possibility that this problem is caused by some form of corrupt data. Try clearing the cache and data of the keyboard app you are using. You should also follow this up by wiping the cache partition of your phone.
Another factor that you should look into is that if a certain app you installed is causing this problem. To check if this is the case you need to start your phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue still occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it’s likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset.
S5 Randomly Freezes And Restarts
Problem: The phone will freeze often and restart itself, it will do it very often and sometimes will take more than one try to restart itself
Solution: For this type of issue you should first check if a third party app you installed is causing the problem by starting your phone in Safe Mode. If the problem does not occur in this mode then proceed with finding the app that’s causing this and uninstall it.
Another troubleshooting step that you should consider is a factory reset. Just make sure to backup your data before performing this procedure.
