Samsung Galaxy S5 Freezes, Lags, Slow Issues

S5 Gets Slow When Using Apps

Problem: Hello, I’ve had my S5 for a couple of months now. I switched from an AT&T s5 active and used the Google account to backup all my data. Unlike the active, this s5 is giving me a lot of issues. It gets super slow when I’m using apps. For example, as I am writing this there’s a huge lag as I’m writing. At the moment it is the only app I’m using. It gets slow when I use the browser, Facebook messenger or random apps and it’s driving me crazy. My wife has the same phone which we got at the same time and has  the same problem. I’ve cleared the cache several times, I’m running du battery saver and du speed booster but I can’t seem to solve the speed issues. Occasionally it takes several seconds to exit apps and the main screen only shows the background picture and apps icon for a few seconds before showing the screen with all my icons.battery gets very warm quickly at times even in standby. I’m out of ideas on solving these issues. Do you have any suggestions?

Solution: One of the reasons why the phone slows down is due to some problems with its data. Try wiping the cache partition of your phone and see if this resolves the problem.

There are also cases when an app you installed in your phone can cause this issue. To check if this is the case you should start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run making it easier to determine if a third party app is the culprit. If in this mode your phone runs smoothly then try to find out the app that is causing the problem and uninstall it.

Does your phone have a microSD card installed? There are cases when the phone slows down if the card is faulty. This is because your phone will take a long time to access the data stored in the card. Try taking out the microSD card and see if this makes any difference.

Finally, if the problem still persists then you should consider doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding. After the factory reset check and see if your phone is still running slow.

S5 Slows Down Apps Open Randomly

Problem: Very slow performance, chrome pops up at random times & loads different websites (sometimes to a site with a black background & green letters & numbers, & a window saying my android device has a virus.) The play store randomly pops up sometimes to different apps like Uber. After putting in my password to unlock my phone sometimes it will freeze, blackout, & I would have to do it again several times or after a couple times of trying it would completely stop working & only my background will show for a couple minutes. My battery gets hot faster now. Very laggy when opening apps or even just sliding through home pages or the apps. When I press on push notifications for apps like pandora, kik, or messages it won’t go to the app or it will take some time to get there & show a blank white screen. Running safe mode seems to fix all these problems for now.

Solution: If the problem disappears in Safe Mode then it is most likely caused by an app you downloaded into your phone. Try to find out what app this is and uninstall it. If you can’t find the app then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Slow Display Of Contact Name During Calls

Problem: Whenever I get a call from someone on my contacts list, doesn’t matter where they are saved; my phone, my SIM, or my Samsung Account, it shows the number for about 5 seconds and then it shows the name of the contact. This is getting extremely annoying because I need to wait for the name to appear before I can answer so that I know who is calling me. Also, sometimes my contact list or my favorites are blank, showing updating contacts and after a couple minutes it shows my contacts, still REALLY slow.

Solution: Try clearing the cache and data of the Contacts app from the Application Manager. This troubleshooting step usually resolves this type of issue.

S5 Slow After System Update

Problem: So i just downloaded the system update a few days ago and I’ve noticed my phone is a lot slower than it was before the update. The keyboard will restart while i’m typing, screen will freeze, it is just a lot slower in general.

Solution: If your phone slows down after a system update this may mean that there is some form of data conflicts in your phone. Try wiping the cache partition of your phone and see if this resolves the problem.

If the problem persists then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S5 Freezes When Adding Contacts

Problem: just noticed that I can’t get to add more than one contact at a time on my Samsung s5. When I try to add another it freezes and I will have to restart my phone. Please how can I fix this?

Solution: It’s very likely that the issue is caused by some form of corrupt data. Try to clear the cache and data of the Contacts app then check if the issue still persists.

S5 Freezes When Powered On

Problem: After switching the phone on from dead using the rhs button it goes through its normal startup sequence and takes me to the lock screen which displays time, date and background screen etc. I can swipe the screen as normal which takes me to the home screen. It’s here that everything freezes. The two lower buttons vibrate when touched but don’t actually do anything. As for the main screen.. I can’t get a response from anything ….apps, volume, swipe down the upper task bar etc .., nothing. I can’t even use the rhs button to return to the lock screen. Nothing seems active yet I still get notifications for messages and emails etc. I hope you can help. Best regards.

Solution: Try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery menu and see if this helps. If not then you will have to do a factory reset using the hardware keys. Make sure to backup your phone data before performing this procedure. You can backup your data by connecting your phone to a computer running on Kies.

If the problem still persists after the factory reset then this may already be a hardware related problem possibly caused by a defective display. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S5 Freezes, Lags, Slow Issues

Problem: My phone is just generally slow, laggy, freezes quite often, but hasn’t restarted itself yet… Sometimes it’ll be just fine, then it starts to freeze and lag, and become really slow.

Solution: In most cases like this the problem is caused by some form of corrupt data. I suggest you wipe the cache partition of your phone first then observe your phone operation.

Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If this card is faulty it may also cause the freezing, lagging, and slow issue you are experiencing with your phone. Try to take out the microSD card then check if the problems still persists.

One last resort that you should consider is to do a factory reset. Just make sure that you backup your phone data before proceeding.
