The #Samsung Galaxy #Note 4 was first released running on Android Jelly Bean. Since Google is constantly updating the Android ecosystem this device has undergone several software updates and is now updated to Android Lollipop. Several owners of this device have already updated their phone without any issues. Some of our readers however have encountered a problem with the software update. In some cases the update will not install while in others the update will install but then issues occur right after.
In this latest troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy Note 4 not updating, problems after software update issue. We have collected some of the issues sent our way and have provided the necessary troubleshooting steps needed to come to a resolution.

Note 4 Not Updating To Latest Software Version
Problem: I am trying to update the latest android version but I’m having an issue. It will download the update just fine. It then restarts the phone to install it but when it actually tries to install it fails and says error. I have tried multiple times but no luck.
Solution: Basically what’s happening here is that the update will download fine but then it will not install.There are several factors to consider as to why this is happening. First, your phone may not have sufficient internal storage space available for the update to install. Remember, the file you downloaded is in its compressed state. It still has to be uncompressed, which takes up a lot of space, then installed. Normally, for major major software updates you will need at least 3 GB of free internal space. However, some of our readers say that they have successfully updated their phones by freeing up 6GB of storage space.
I suggest you try to free up some space first in your phone then try to do the update again.
If the update still fails then there’s a possibility that an app installed in your phone or a glitch in the phone software is preventing the update to be installed. If this is the case then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete you will need to download the update again.
Note 4 Won’t Update
Problem: My note 4 won’t update . I took it to ATT and they said it was a Samsung problem? Please help!
Solution: What exactly happens when you try to get the update? Can your phone detect an update available? Can your phone download the update? Or does the update fail to install?
With very little detail to work on I suggest you proceed with backing up your phone data then do a factory reset. This achieves two things. It frees up the internal storage space of your phone then it also removes any potential software glitch that may prevent your phone from updating.
Once the factory reset is complete try to check if there are any software updates available OTA. If no updates are found then connect your phone using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch running. Once your phone is detected you will be prompted of a software update. Just follow the onscreen instructions to update your phone.
In case no software update is found then you should check if your phone software has been modified in any way. Is your phone rooted? Is in unlocked? Is it running on a custom software? These factors can prevent your phone from getting the software update.
Note 4 Fails To Install Update
Problem: baseband: N910AUCU2COC6, kernel: 3.10.40-4160876, build: LRX22C.N910…. trying to install the new software update that my phone has been telling me about for like a month. it’s a 600mb update and I have 2 gigs free on my phone and half the sd card is free. after the download the phone says restarting in 5 seconds, I click restart, it shuts down and boots into a recovery mode, as soon as it gets to the android with the open chest and says installing it immediately fails and rolls back and reboots normally. I have rooted and installed custom roms on many of my phones in the past, and to my knowledge there is no root for the note 4 AT&T version correct? so how would I go about clearing the cache?
Solution: The 2GB internal storage space available in your phone may not be enough for the update to successfully be installed. Samsung has recommended that at least 3GB of storage space be made available if a major software update is to be installed. Some of our readers however have reported that even when they freed up 3GB of space they were still not able to install the update. Clearing 6 GB of internal storage space did the trick.
Try to free up at least 6 GB of internal storage space. You can do this by wiping the cache partition of your phone from recovery, uninstalling games and apps, or moving your personal data to the microSD card.
If after freeing up space the update will still not install then an app installed in your phone or a software glitch may be causing the problem. I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset using the hardware keys.Once the reset is done you will need to download the update again.
Note 4 Updating Contact List After Lollipop Update
Problem: I have recently updated to lollipop version 5.1.1 and after updating my contact list is showing that “updating contact list” from last 4 hours..i have lost all my contacts how can i stop it from updating and show my contacts
Related problem: Just updated to 5.1.1 and phone cannot read contacts on Sim. it’s just telling me that it is updating contacts. and is draining my battery. Please help.
Solution: This is a common problem in Android devices that upgraded to Lollipop. What happens is that your contacts list can’t be accessed and instead you will get a notice that says “updating contact list” when you try to access your contacts. One quick way to resolve this is to toggle the master Sync switch of your phone. To do this you need to access the Quick Settings by swiping down using two fingers from the top display. Tap on the Sync switch to turn it off. Once it is off reboot your device. As soon as your phone turns on go back to the Sync switch then turn it on.
In most cases the problem will already be resolved by now. However, there are instances when the issue still occurs. If it does then restart your phone in recovery mode and wipe its cache partition. This deletes the temporary data stored in your phone which if corrupt can cause this problem.
If the problem still persists then you should manually sync your contacts.
- Open Contacts.
- Touch More options.
- Choose Accounts.
- Choose the account where your contacts are saved.
- Touch More options.
- Tap Sync now.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the problem then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset using the hardware keys.
Note 4 Update Fails To Install
Problem: Hi! thank you for helping! i have a galaxy note 4 that keeps rebooting whenever i switch quickly between apps , plus i keep getting the message that says and app crashed and when i open the recovery it says dm-verity verification failed though i haven’t rooted or tampered with my phone. and when 5.1.1 update was installing it stalled at 100% so i had to remove the battery then it restarted saying installing system update and it reached 28% before giving an error message then rebooting the device into android. Thanks In Advance!
Solution: It’s very likely that that some form of corrupt data is causing this problem. This is usually the case when your phone apps crashes or you are unable to install a software update. What I suggest you do is to backup your phone data. You can do this using Kies or Smart Switch. Once you have made a backup of your data proceed by doing a factory reset using the hardware keys. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Once the reset is done proceed with downloading the software update.
Note 4 Restarts When Installing Update
Problem: I just got the update for Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. I was able to download the update(636.85MB). But when I try to install the update, the phone restarts(which is normal) and then shows “error”. Then the whole update is cancelled. I’ve already done this 3 times. I hope I’ll get a solution here. Thank you.
Solution: There are two possible reasons why this issue is happening. First, your phone may not have enough internal storage space available. Although the update is only more than 600 MB in size this is still in its compressed state. This will still be uncompressed before proceeding with the installation. Samsung recommends that you have at least 3 GB of internal storage space available. To be on the safe side I recommend you have at least 6 GB of internal storage space as what some of our readers have suggested.Take note that the internal storage space is different from the microSD storage space.
Once you have freed up the necessary storage space try to see if you can proceed with the update installation.
If the update still fails then another possible reason is that an app or a problem with the phone software is preventing the update from being installed. If this is the case then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete you will need to download the update again.
Note 4 Call Quality Degradation After Update
Problem: Since the 5.1.1 update call quality is awful. Breaks up, other party cannot hear me, static, sounds like in tunnel, etc. Spoke with AT&T and they sent replacement (refurbished) phone but still same issue with replacement. It is intermittent but very annoying. AT&T mentioned “problems with the update in some LTE areas”. Other AT&T Note 4 users experiencing same issues. And have also heard of at least one similar issue with an AT&T Samsung S4 minI after updating to 5.1.1
Solution: The issue could be caused by a bug in the phone software. Since it only occurs intermittently then you can check if it is network related. You can take note of the area where the problem occurs. If it occurs only in one particular area then it may be a signal or network related issue. You can also try to switch between the different network modes of your phone (LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA/GSM (auto connect), WCDMA only or GSM only.) and check which one provides the best call quality.
In some cases an app installed in your phone can cause this problem. If this is the case then you should start your phone in Safe Mode. Make some calls while in this mode. If the issue does not occur then an app may be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it. If you can’t find the app or if the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then backup your phone data and do a factory reset.
Finally, if the above troubleshooting steps fail you can either wait for the upcoming update that may contain a fix to this bug or you can roll back your phone to the previous software version. Going back to the previous version is not easy though as this has to be done manually.
