Hi. My internal storage was full yesterday and it gave an error message that I cannot and receive text messages. I cleaned my files today and freed up more memory.
How do I get the text messages from when the error was on?
I tried restarting, turning on/off mobile networks and changing default messing app to hangouts. Still didn’t sync. Please help. — Joseph
Solution: Hi Joseph. Delivery of text messages depends on the conditions set by your network service provider. If your device was not ready during the delivery period, it is typical for carriers to keep SMS and MMS for a certain period so they can attempt to re-send them at a later time. This means that there’s nothing that you can do at your end but wait for the carrier to send the messages again.
I took my phone to Europe and purchased a SIM card there for use. I changed the APN’s appropriately and all worked except I could not send texts. I verified with Verizon that my phone was completely unlocked, then I called the provider in Europe and they first guided me to go to settings/applications/messages/text messages and change the settings there appropriately.
When I attempted to do that, the “Messages” field was grayed out and I could not access it. When I explained to support they told me this is a problem with the Verizon phones because Verizon uses a customize version of the Android (or customized firmware, I really don’t recall…). They said that if I flashed the phone with standard Samsung / Android software or firmware that all would work. I decided not to make any changes as I was concerned that if I did, my phone may not work when I return home.
My question is. If I were to put standard software/firmware on my Verizon phone so it would work fully in Europe (for next time) would my phone also work with Verizon when I put my Verizon SIM card back in? — Mark
Solution: Hi Mark. If you’ll flash a non-Verizon ROM to your phone, there’s no guarantee that all Verizon services will work once you insert a Verizon SIM card. We don’t work for Verizon so we don’t have an accurate list of services that will work on a device that runs on a non-Verizon firmware. You have to ask them for this information yourself.
I had a Samsung S3 mini which started to give me problems sending text. It would say message not sent every so often so after speaking to my supplier, Virgin, I decided that with the phone being 2 years old I would replace it. I bought an S5 brand new from car phone warehouse one week ago after six days.
The same thing is happening again so I am assuming the problem is not phone related. My wife, daughter and grand daughter all on Virgin and none of them have had the same trouble as myself whilst being in my house. I will be contacting Virgin once again re this problem thanks. — TP
Solution: Hi TP. If the same issue happens on a new S5, the first thing that you can do is ask Virgin to replace the SIM card (especially if you recycle your old one from the S3). If using another SIM won’t do any good, start troubleshooting your phone.
Boot your S5 in safe mode
Users usually carry the same set of applications over when changing to another phone. To see if one of your installed apps is the culprit, try to boot the phone in safe mode. To do that, follow these steps:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
- To go back to normal mode, simply restart the phone.
Run the phone in safe mode for several hours and make sure to test if the issue will occur. If everything appears normal in safe mode, this means that one of your apps is to blame. Make sure to uninstall apps until the issue will be eliminated. Otherwise, proceed to the next solution.
Delete the messaging app’s cache and data
If the issue remains even when in safe mode, the problem is most probably isolated to the text messaging app you’re using. Try wiping its cache and data to see what happens next. Here’s how:
- Go to Settings.
- Proceed to Applications.
- Select Manage Applications.
- Tap the All tab.
- Choose the name of the messaging app and tap it.
- From there, you will see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
Hi, this isn’t a current issue. It’s one I just resolved, but maybe it’s an unknown issue and it has a simple fix. As of late, I’ve been having a couple issues with my S5’s system clock. A couple weeks ago, the automatically set time from the network was an hour off, so I reset the time manually.
Today I awoke and all of the texts I was sending, and receiving, we’re not being updated in the chat window. I confirmed that my messages were being sent by a friend, so I started trying to resolve the issue. Did soft and hard resets, cache partition erase, and updates to no avail. I switched messaging apps, still nothing. As I was scrolling around in my conversation trying to confirm that my messages were nowhere to be found, I found the test messages I sent to myself in the previous day at 9pm. I looked at my clock and it was 9am. I looked at my phone’s clock and it said 9pm. Somehow my phone, again, was having a time issue, so I set it back to automatically updating from the network, which now gave the correct time as opposed to when I had to adjust it manually. I sent a message with the clock being correct and it worked perfectly.
So what I’ve learned is that if your system clock is the wrong time, your messages may not be stored or updated. And if they are, they will be in the previous day’s conversation. — Chris
Solution: Hi Chris. Thanks for sharing this helpful input. You’re correct. If a device’s time is incorrect, the network will continue to send your messages normally although they may be sorted differently on your phone.
My text message icon does not show up on my status bar and my vibration has changed to just a very short spurt after an AT&T update. Everything worked fine before the update and now I physically have to check my messages every time I open my phone to make sure I don’t have a text message.
I’ve soft reset, cleared the phone cache, made sure my text messages are set on priority, made sure my text message was set on vibrate, made sure I had the notification box checked to receive notifications on the app. Still I don’t receive notifications for the app. It’s the app that came with the phone. Not the AT&T message app. Any help to rectify this would be appreciated. — Stomie
Solution: Hi Stomie. We can see that you’ve already tried some of the basic software troubleshooting. If wiping the cache partition did not fix the issue, the next logical step is doing a factory reset. Unless this is a flaw in AT&T’s version of Android Lollipop, factory reset should restore the normal notification features of your phone. We haven’t heard of this problem from other AT&T users so this may be isolated to your phone. Updates don’t usually go as planned, especially with Android Lollipop, so making sure that there are no firmware-related issues via factory reset is a must in your case.
In case you need the steps, here they are:
- Power down the Galaxy S5.
- Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
- Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
- Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
- Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
- When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Messaging. Ever since the phone has done it’s updates, I cannot send emojis on my text messages. I used to. The little face was under the paperclip and one I pressed it they would pop up the emoji screen. now when I press the little face nothing happens. I have tried turning off the phone taking out the battery running diagnostics checking every app and nothing. I’m at the point where I am considering of doing a hard reset to see if everything gets back to normal.
In addition I am dropping calls or the call goes directly to voicemail and then the voicemail will show up 2 hours later sometimes the same thing happens via a text message whether the message is coming from an iPhone or an Android. please advise.
Also I need to know why my Bluetooth does not work when I am in my car to use the GPS and have the Bluetooth to engage the phone at the same time the phone portion will work but the GPS will not speak. — Evelyn
Solution: Hi Evelyn. Because the issues you have started after an update, it is recommended that you first wipe the cache partition.
Here are the steps:
- Turn the phone off.
- Press and hold the following buttons together: Power, Volume Up and Home.
- Release the buttons once the Android system recovery menu appears.
- Use the Volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option.
- Press the Power button to confirm selection.
- Select Reboot System Now option after deleting the cache. Wait for the phone to reboot.
Wiping the phone’s cache or cache partition may not be effective at times so make sure to proceed to factory reset (steps are provided above).
