Samsung Galaxy Note 4 opens a billing site, random apps open after unlock & other app related issues

In this post I will address some app-related problems with Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (#Samsung #GalaxyNote4). Issues like these are very common and could happen to anyone regardless of the brand and model of their Android phones. So, if you are currently experiencing issues that involve one or two of your apps, you might want to check below to see if your concern is among the ones I cited here.

Note 4 redirects to a billing site

Problem: My Note 4 constantly goes to gateway billing site and wants me to pay for games that I have never tried to play. It seems strange as I also have a Note 10.1 2014 with a SIM running 4.4.2 and an A3 running 4.4.4 I run basically the same apps on all and my Note 4 is the only one with the problem which I thought maybe came with a downloaded app. My Note 4 has the Exynos chip. So is there a way of maybe stopping this annoying situation?

Troubleshooting: It’s a good thing you recognized it immediately as one form of phishing scams. More often, this kind of activity is caused by an app, so you really have to find it and uninstall it. Also, try closing the tab that opened the site and see if it pops up on its own while browsing or while using an app.

Now, since we really don’t have an idea which app is causing it, try to go to the Battery Usage screen and take note of the apps that run when the page automatically opened. Try to disable suspected third-party apps to see if the page still pops up without them running. Likewise, try to clear the cache and data of the browser that opens the site and delete its browsing history.

We cannot offer you a resolution but you can continue your observation to know more about the problem. But if you’re already fed up observing and wants to go through the hassle of backing up all your data than dealing with this problem, I suggest you do the master reset.

  1. Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  7. When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  8. The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.

Google Play Store opens to get the user install a game

Problem: Google Play store always opens up unexpectedly to try to get me to install another unwanted game I never asked for. This just started happening in the last few weeks. How do I get this to stop. I don’t want Google Play bugging me when I didn’t ask to be taken to their store. Many others I’ve talked to have also noticed this obtrusive behavior from Google. Anything we can do or do we just have to suffer with these rude interruptions?

Troubleshooting: Odds are you installed an app that comes packed with ads or you were browsing the web and have accidentally clicked or tapped on an ad that redirected you to a page that asks you to download (and install) the game. To know if it’s an app that’s causing all this, boot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Turn off the phone completely.
  2. Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  3. When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  4. Safe mode will be displayed at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

In this mode, all third-party apps that you downloaded and installed on your phone are temporarily disabled. So, if it was an app that’s causing the problem, it shouldn’t occur. So, continue using your phone and be observant.

If the problem didn’t occur in safe mode, our suspicion is confirmed. So, the real fix will now come from you. Try to find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it. If you’ve recently installed some and then this issue started, one of them is the culprit. To uninstall an app, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and scroll to ‘Applications’ section.
  3. Touch Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of ‘ALL’ tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap the app in question.
  6. Tap Uninstall.

Galaxy Note 4 stuck while installing an app from Play Store

Problem: When trying to load an app from the Play Store like Candy Crush, etc. it will not load the app. Just runs and runs and says installing. I’m connected to Wi-Fi. Please help.

Troubleshooting: The first thing I want you to do is check if there are other apps being installed or updated. If there are, wait until they are finished before downloading a new one. Secondly, if you’re already attempted to download and install the app a few times, some data may have already been saved in the phone and that might cause issues like this. Try to clear the cache and data of the download manager as it often fixes problems related to yours.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and scroll to ‘Applications’ section.
  3. Touch Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of ‘ALL’ tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Download Manager.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data, OK.

If the problem, however, started after updating some pre-installed apps including Google Play Store, then try uninstalling its updates. That should take care of the problem:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings and scroll to ‘Applications’ section.
  3. Touch Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of ‘ALL’ tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Google Play Store.
  6. Tap Uninstall updates.

Voice-to-text freezes when using FB Messenger app

Problem: When using the Samsung messenger app, and voice to text, sometimes the pop up screen for the tap to speak / microphone freezes. There is no way to X out delete. Nothing will eliminate that screen or allow further connection. Only by doing a power off and restart will the system reset. I have begun using the Verizon messenger app and have had no problems with the voice to text speech screen.

Troubleshooting: This is obviously the Messenger issue. The problem is not common, in fact, I only just encountered it now. There are three things you can do to see if it’s fixed: first, try to see if there’s an update available for the app, if there’s none clear its cache and data and lastly, uninstall it and download a fresh copy from the Play Store.

We can’t offer a solution to this problem for now but we’ll get back to you as soon as we find more information about it.

Random apps open when unlocking the Note 4

Problem: Hi Droid Guy, Greetings from Austria! I just got myself a Note 4 and I am very happy with it but for one thing: ca. 50 % of the time that I unlock the phone a random app is open and running – even though I haven´t activated or used it the whole day.

E.g. I unlock the screen and FB or Spotify is on its way. Also, sometimes my TuneIn started to stream when the phone was locked, which can be rather annoying during meetings! Thank you for your help! Best wishes, M.

Troubleshooting: Hello Miss M. This problem happens not just to Note 4 owners such as yourself but also to S5, S6 and S6 Edge owners and the most common cause is the Nova launcher but it doesn’t mean it’s really the cause as there are some users who reported to have experienced the issue without installing any third-party launcher. It’s not really a problem but more of an annoyance and it’s probably just a bug and it is, of course, tied to the firmware, which only Samsung could fix by sending an update that will patch it.

Downloaded apps constantly crash or freeze

Problem: Any apps I have  downloaded from the Play Store constantly crash/freeze. I have done a soft reset/hard reset my phone still the same issue. Done multiple factory reset still the same, I have noticed that Samsung’s Touch Wiz is constantly crashing as well. I have checked for software update but there is none. Please, help me!

Suggestion: There’s something lacking here–when did the problem start?…and how? Obviously, this problem never existed since day 1 because if it has already been happening, you shouldn’t be contacting us but contact the dealer or service provider and have it replaced. There must be something significant that may have caused or triggered the crashes and freezes like rooting, failed update, tampered firmware, etc.

You’ve done your part like factory reset, checking for updates and all to no avail. So, it’s time for technicians to take a look at your phone. Contact your provider, dealer or even Samsung and ask for help. There’s not much we can do about it… unless you are willing to take the risk and try to re-flash the firmware. But please, proceed at your own risk.
