Galaxy S5 cannot send a reply to text message, other text-related problems

Problem #1: Galaxy S5 cannot send a reply to text message

Hi Guys! I just want to ask regarding the texting and sending issue of my S5. My S5 originally came from my sister who lives in the US right now. She gave me her phone as a gift for my birthday, then after receiving her phone from US, i switch the SIM card into a local one here in the Philippines. After that I’ve noticed that when I’m sending my first message to a friend, it was a success then when it’s my time to reply, I need to make another new message again in order to reply to that same person. I hope you could help me fix this issue. Thanks. — Jay

Solution: Hi Jay. What app are you using when sending and replying to a text message? Make sure that the default messaging app is set properly. We suggest that you use the stock SMS app called Messages. To set is as default, simply do the following:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap More networks.
  • Tap Default messaging app.
  • Tap on Messages.

Problem #2: Verizon Galaxy S5 keyboard issue

Dear Droid Guy. I am using the stock messages app that came with the Samsung Galaxy S5 G900V and running Build BOE1 (not the Verizon messenger app) and a few months ago when I opened my messages app to send a message, the orange outlined smiley face, which is located on the left in the text box next to the attachment paperclip, stopped working completely. Normally, when I tapped it, the smiley faces emoticons menu would pop right up and I could easily choose one, as I was texting and flash right back to ABC and/or simply push send and all was good. Not anymore.

Now, I have to long press the microphone button on my key pad and the same emoticon smileys pop up, but it’s so irritating that it takes longer and interrupts the flow of my text messaging. The orange outlined smiley was only for use with messaging. Any time I use emoticons on websites, I know to push the microphone and choose the smiley face for options for social media. No problem there. Then I noticed that an odd little black outlined small smile face showed up in my emoticon menu, right next to, what used to be, the first option smiley face to choose from, on the first menu, but nowhere else. Below is a list of things I have tried:

  • Complete Factory Restore 3x (also for other Lollipop issues).
  • Cleared Partition Cache (several times)
  • Backed up messages i needed to keep and erased all data from my messages app, restored default settings and the same for the Samsung Stock Keyboard, erased all data, restored default settings and that small black outlined smiley will NOT go away and the orange outlined smiley in my text box still will not work. I do not have any other keyboards or messaging apps installed or turned on (they are disabled if not uninstalled) and I’ve not downloaded any keyboards, except for Google, which I uninstalled a few months later. I’ve looked for updates for the keyboard but cannot find that info. I also have a screen shot if you need.

Solution: Hi Pamela. If the keyboard looks the same immediately after doing a factory reset and without installing any apps, the app may have been changed by your carrier. Android operating system and some basic pre-installed apps are customizable and carriers often changed some features to give their product a unique feel. We are not 100% sure if Verizon did update the stock messaging app and keyboard on their phones but if nothing happens when you reset them to default, that might very well be the case.

We doubt if Verizon’s technical support team can help you with this issue but they may be able to point you to the developer team that builds their apps.

Problem #3: Unable to receive text messages on Galaxy S5

I was working in Singapore and texted every day with no issues. When I got back to West Africa the text stop working. I can text myself and the people I send the text to can see what I sent them but I’m unable to receive their text.

I have WhatsApp installed so I use that when I have wireless to help save cost on calling home back to the USA. The last few days I’ll hear it ring as if I have a message but when I look there is nothing there. Please help. I have cleared cache, turned off my phone and restarted, removed my battery. I still have nine gigs on my phone but still nothing seems to work.

Even sometimes I guess I’ll get a text and can see it across the top of my phone but when I click on the text to read it, it’s not there. — Whitney

Solution: Hi Whitney. Did you check with your carrier (SIM card provider) in West Africa if the phone is configured to received text messages? Unless this is answered first, there’s really only so much that we can do to help you. Below are the things that you can try:

Verify if you inbox is full. Cleaning your SMS inbox should be part of your maintenance tasks. If the inbox is full, the device cannot receive messages. Simply delete about 5 text messages or threads and ask your friends again to send you a message.

Restore the phone’s defaults via factory reset. Doing a factory reset may be helpful in this case if you think that the firmware or operating system may be causing the trouble. If you did not install any app or system update prior to noticing the problem, simply skip this step.

If you haven’t tried a factory reset before, here are the steps to do it:

  • Power down the Galaxy S5.
  • Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
  • Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
  • Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
  • Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
  • When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.

Contact your carrier. If you’re satisfied that your inbox is not full and a factory reset doesn’t work, the next logical step is to let your carrier know about the problem. There’s no other troubleshooting that you can do on your end to fix this.

Problem #4: Galaxy S5 text messages are out of order

When I receive text messages that may be a little long, they are truncated and appear out of sequence on my phone. For example, the end of the message appears first, the middle is at the end and the beginning of the message is in the middle. Furthermore, the messages are not numbered (for example 1/3, 1/2,1/3, etc) for me to even try to decipher what order the messages are in. It is extremely frustrating and annoying having to keep scrolling up and down to read the text messages. I have tried all your suggested fixes with the network data/time zone, the automatic time zone, and nothing works.  I have also tried downloading apps like SMS fix, and that does not work either.  Please help.  I’m thinking about about switching back to an iPhone. — DeeDee

Solution:  Hi DeeDee. If Automatic date and time and Automatic time zone are checked but the issue persists, the issue may lie on how your network sends the messages. This is no longer a phone problem so there’s nothing more that we can do. Try to call your carrier and let them know about the problem.

Problem #5: Galaxy S5 receives text messages late

When I get text messages, I don’t receive them till the next day! I tried soft reset multiple times, I’ve cleared up all my messages, and I’ve removed unused apps. Nothing seems to work! I asked a friend for advice and he says it might be because I was out of state and my phone coverage was messed up. Could this be a possibility? If so, what can I do to fix it? Please help!!! Alina

Solution: Hi Alina. Delays in sending text messages to your device is network-related so troubleshooting your phone won’t fix it. The reliability of SMS depends on the quality of service of your network. If you are constantly experiencing delays in receiving SMS and MMS, you have to ask for support from your network’s technical team so they advise you on what to do.

Keep in mind that network issues such as this can be due to other problems such as outages and maintenance.

Problem #6: Galaxy S5 very slow when sending and receiving text messages

I have been having issues with my phone delaying my sending and receiving text messages. it started a couple of weeks ago. I thought it may have been an Atkins app that I downloaded so I uninstalled that app. Most of the time I will only get my text messages after I turn my phone off and back on then all of them come back through. Please help this is really frustrating especially when it is important and you have no idea that anyone is trying to even reach you. It also does it with calls sometimes I will have 4G 2-3 bars and my phone will not ring and then after like 10 times of someone trying to call it will ring or I will have random voicemails but no missed calls and most of the time I know I have a good signal to receive call and text messages. — Amber

Solution: Hi Amber. Please do a factory reset and observe the phone for at least 24 hours before installing any application. This will give you enough time to see if the problem is phone- or network-related. Make sure to replicate the situation you described here during the observation period to isolate the issue further. If the problem fails to occur after a factory reset (steps provided above), that means that one of your installed apps, or a firmware update may have messed up the device.

However, if you continue to receive delayed text messages and random voicemails and calls, consider calling your network.
