Galaxy Note 4 lags when typing PIN, other operating system problems

Problem #1: How to unlock Galaxy Note 4 when fingerprint scanner, backup password, and Android Device Manager do not help

On my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A last night, the fingerprint scanner suddenly stopped working, and it would not accept my backup passcode. I went to ADM and clicked on [lock] and typed in a new password on the New Lock Screen popup. 

As promised, the current lock screen was replaced with the “Locked by Android Device Manager” screen displaying my message.  After pressing the [home] button, I was taken to the “enter password” screen with my usual screensaver displayed.  When I entered the new password, the message “incorrect backup password” appeared.  I have repeated this two more times with different passwords and different recovery phrases over the course of 12 hours.

I can’t get back to the Google lost password or Google sign-in screen to try using my Google password to reset the phone.

I tried the soft reset you kindly suggested at the top of this page to no avail. 

I restarted the phone in recovery mode and deleted the cache (partition) as suggested on some forum, then rebooted the phone, but that didn’t work.

The AT&T support center only had a hard reset to offer me.

I lost my backups 3 days ago when I deleted AVG from my computers and this Note 4 and changed to Bitdefender.

I’ve tried plugging phone via USB into computer and even network router, but of course it is not visible, regardless of whether or not the screen is on when the phone is powered on.

Finally, i tried Samsung’s Find My Mobile.  After ensuring the correct phone model and phone number was displayed in the upper left corner of the webpage, I read immediately below that correct information, the following:

Device status

OFF   Checking…

Immediately below that, I clicked on [Display a registered device] but none appeared,

Solution: Hi Robb. The security layers for the Note 4 are designed to be forgiving to users. The backup password, well, is there for backup. The Android Device Manager security layer is for the worst case scenario and unfortunately, Google and Samsung can only do so much to secure devices. If you have already tried all the steps provided by Google from this page, your only option is to ask Samsung to unlock the phone for you. There is nothing more that you can do to resolve this issue on your end.

Make sure to bring all important papers that will confirm that you are the owner of the device to avoid delays. AT&T can only help you at a certain level; Samsung can  use more advanced techniques to unlock your Note 4.

Problem #2: Facebook app freezes constantly on Galaxy Note 4

Not sure if this is a memory issue or app issue. Facebook freezes up constantly especially when trying to watch a video. Never had this issue on my Note 2. I have uninstalled FB and reinstalled. I’ve performed a soft reset. I verified cleared out my RAM. I moved several apps to my SD card in case it was a memory issue.  The problem continues.

I’ve stopped using the app and have started logging into FB via Chrome and I have not run into the freezing problem yet…but I have only logged in this way a couple of times. Thanks in advance for your help! — Annette

The important potential solutions you must do include booting in safe mode, clearing the app’s cache and data, clearing the cache partition, and doing a factory reset.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 4 lags when typing PIN

Hi. I bought this phone brand new about 2 months ago I’m now experiencing slow start when putting my PIN number in. Sometimes when I text it will stop then pause and start the input again or it has on some occasions gone back to home screen then I have to press the back up button and continue texting. I never had any problems with my Note 3. Any ideas?

Also, I used to have fingerprint access but that too played up. It’s so annoying for a new phone. — Sally

Solution: Hi Sally. Did you change or add anything on your phone prior to noticing these issues? Did you notice them after installing system or app updates or new apps?

The answers to these two important questions usually determines what approach to take in our troubleshooting.

Since we can only assume that you may be uncertain if some changes were introduced to the device before the problem occurred, we suggest that you do the basic software troubleshooting. This process involves doing the basic stuff if a user thinks the issue may be coming from a bad software.

Wipe the system cache

In your case, you can start the process by wiping the cache partition. Deleting the system cache, also known as cache partition, can be an effective method to fix performance issues including the one you describe. The system cache is a set of temporary files used by the system to load apps quickly and efficiently. If the cache gets corrupted or outdated after an update or an installation of another app, you can refresh it by simply wiping it clean.

This method is also a maintenance task that is supposed to be done in a regular basis so you can safely do it without fear of losing important personal files. Here’s how to do it:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the wiping of the cache partition is finished, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the power key.

Boot in safe mode

If you have tried booting your Windows computer in safe mode, Android safe mode functions exactly the same way. For the uninitiated, safe mode is a special runtime environment where a user can uninstall apps, or observe if a particular issue is due to a problem app. To do this, just follow these steps:

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  • When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  • Safe mode will be displayed at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Restore firmware defaults via master reset

Also known as factory reset, this procedure can be a bit demanding as you need to backup your personal files first before proceeding. Master reset will delete everything on the phone’s internal storage device and bring back operating system state to factory defaults. This is an effective solution if you are having multiple app problems, or if you suspect that there’s a software cause to your problem. Below are the steps to do it:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Vol Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Vol Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  • The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.

Problem #4: Some apps have changed after getting a replacement Galaxy Note 4

Well I’m a senior trying to learn this still after 5 years. However, I recently had a warranty exchange for my Note 4 only to find that all my S Notes did not transfer nor did my Quick Notes. Don’t know how to find the Android version as per the instructions too complicated.

My point is that the contact form, even though all contacts transferred, is now different in ‘form’ and that is disappointing. The form I had before was so much nicer.

If I’m transferring to a new phone (same phone), why is there a noticeable difference in some of the built-in apps. Please don’t say it’s  an updated version. It’s hard enough to keep up as it is… — Penny

Solution: Hi Penny. Modern day mobile communications systems change faster than most of us can keep up so we don’t blame you if you find it hard too. In Android world, operating systems and apps get updated not only to introduce new “forms” but also for security.

If there have been significant changes you observed after moving from one Note 4 to another, that is most probably because the operating system was updated. Your old Note 4 may had Android KitKat while the new one right is already running the most recent Android Lollipop. While KitKat is cosmetically different from Lollipop, the changes “under the hood” are even more significant with the latter. Deep inside, Lollipop is coded way more differently than KitKat, thus not only will you notice how things look different in it, but other changes including performance, loading times, among others may also be noticeable.

With the change in operating system comes modifications to apps as well. Updates may be released to change the appearance of apps to be in harmony with how the new operating system look, so it can be expected that users will notice changes to their forms (although changes may not always be good). Needless to say, apps also need constant adjustment in order to work with a new operating system with the least possible bugs. An app that works fine on KitKat on the same device is not guaranteed to work in exactly the same way on another Note 4 running Android Lollipop operating system. Apps need to evolve in order to work effectively and efficiently. Outdated apps will not only potentially cause complications later on, but can also become a potential security threat for a device. Keeping apps updated (which may also mean changing how they look), is a must in our smartphone world. This is how it works and we must adjust to it.

It’s also worth mentioning that not all apps upload a copy of your files and settings to a remote server (commonly known as cloud) so that you can just simply synchronize your new phone to get your old files back. In some other times, an app may offer cloud service but a user may fail to utilize it before doing a factory reset or exchanging their device for a new one. Either of these two must have happened in your case.

It may be unacceptable for you but yes, your new Galaxy Note 4 may be an updated version and the best that you can do is to learn how to use it. If you want to live in today’s digital world, you must find a way to learn new things fast.
