#VerizonWireless has publicly announced its plans to start testing #5G networks as early as next year. Following this test period, the carrier is hoping to bring it to at least some regions by 2017. It must be noted that Verizon is the only carrier to openly announce its intentions and plans regarding 5G networks, although we hope that other carriers will follow suit soon.
The carrier has also listed down its plans to bring this idea to fruition:
Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm and Samsung kicked-off the inaugural Verizon 5G Technology Forum last month, and have established working teams to ensure an aggressive pace of innovation.
5G network environments, or “sandboxes,” are being created in Verizon’s Waltham, Mass., and San Francisco Innovation Centers. Just like in the early days of the development of 4G LTE technology, collaborating in a shared environment will foster compelling applications faster.
Verizon and its partners are committed to beginning technology field trials in 2016.
Given that it’s still quite early in the day, the carrier hasn’t offered details on which markets will receive 5G support first. But needless to say, Verizon will probably include some of its prime markets in the first run.
