Samsung Galaxy S5 Can’t Send Receive MMS & Other Related Issues

S5 Not Sending MMS Or Connecting To Mobile Data

Problem: I bought this samsung galaxy s5 recently and i connected it to cricket but i cant send videos or images and i can’t use the mobile data i can only text and call please help me

Solution: The most likely reason why this issue is happening is because the APN settings of your phone have not been set yet for the Cricket network. Try checking your phone and see if this is the case. If it is then you should either create a new APN ( if one is not present) or edit the APN settings in your phone to match the one used by Cricket.

You have to have an active mobile data subscription to be able to send or receive an MMS as well as use the mobile data service.

S5 Not Sending Or Receiving MMS

Problem: Hi.  I recently bought a Galaxy S5 from an online store, and it is an AT&T phone, but i use it for Metro PCS.  When the phone got to my house, I called Metro PCS customer service because my data services were not working.  They had me update the APN (I have included a picture of what my APN menu looks like when I open it).  I can’t remember if they had me  do anything with the “”Network Operators”” menu, but I have included a picture of that menu as well.  After I did this, I restarted my phone and when it powered up, I opened an Internet window and it was working, so I assumed that all data services were working, but I later found that, although I could send SMS messages, I could not send or receive any type of MMS messages via text.  I have included a picture of what my “”Multimedia Messages”” menu looks  like when I go into the settings.  I can get pictures on Facebook Messenger, so I know the phone can download pictures, but why can’t I receive MMS messages via text? Also, I keep getting a notification that an email cannot be downloaded (I have included a picture of this), but I am getting up to date emails everyday on this device.  When I click on the notification, it just goes to my Gmail inbox.  Im very confused as to why the phone is doing this.  Please help.  Please note that I have not sent any pictures.  I sent this to the email  address listed on the site and got a response stating to submit this form, so I simply “Copy & Pasted” the body of my email.

Solution: Upon checking the photos which you sent us via email it appears that the settings you are using are correct. However, we didn’t get to see the detailed APN setting of your phone as we only got to view the name of the APN your phone is using which is “metro pcs lte”. What you need to do is to tap this APN and check its settings.  For Metro PCS the settings listed below should be the one set on your phone.

  • APN: fast.metropcs.com
  • Proxy: Not Required
  • Port: Not Required
  • Username: Not Required
  • Password: Not Required
  • Server: Not Required
  • MMSC: http:// metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
  • MMS proxy: leave it blank
  • MMS port: leave it blank
  • MCC: 310
  • MNC: 16
  • Authentication type: Just leave the default settings there

Once you have made sure that the settings on your phone are correct you should be able to send and receive picture messages.

Regarding the issue with your email it looks like you are having a problem receiving the email on your phone stock email app. As I checked the photo you sent the error message “The email server (imap.gmail.com”) is not responding. Make sure the account information in your incoming mail setting is correct” appears. This means that there may be a problem with the incoming mail setting on the email app. Try to check your phone’s email settings.

S5 Converting SMS To MMS

Problem: My text messages are automatically changing from SMS to MMS.  I tried to follow the steps to change it on one of your forum pages where another person was having the same issue.  I followed the steps of opening messages going to settings and then that is where I had the issue.  There is no “creation mode” listed on my phone.  Am I looking in the wrong place?   When I send messages to my daughter in law they all go to her phone as MMS and she is restricted on data.  Is there a way she can change it on her phone as well?  She has a Samsung S4.

Solution: In most cases when you try to send a long text message (usually above 480 characters) using the S5 it will automatically send it as an MMS instead of as an SMS. To make sure that you are alerted when the character limit is reached you can go to the settings of your messaging app and under MMS tick the box under MMS alert. You will be notified if your SMS is converted to MMS.

If however your phone converts your text message to MMS even if you are sending a message with only a few characters then this is a problem. You should first try to clear the cache and data of your phone messaging app and see if this fixes the issue.

You should also consider using another messaging app and see if the problem gets resolved. Try using Hangouts first before choosing some of the popular third party messaging apps over at the Google Play Store.

If the problem still persists I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset.

S5 Verizon Model Can’t Change APN Setting

Problem: I have a Verizon s5 that’s unlocked, using it with straight talk so im trying to change the APN settings. But when I go to do that it doesn’t give me an option to add another APN or to delete the existing one. Do you know how I can add the APN I need or to get around it not giving me that option?

Solution:  Changing the APN for a Verizon branded S5 can’t be done easily as the option to add an APN is not present. This feature has been locked by the phone firmware itself. The best way for you to change the APN of this phone is if you reflash the phone with an unbranded firmware that allows for the adding, deletion, and editing of the APN setting.
