Problem #1: Samsung Galaxy S6 not displaying received text messages
Hello! Thanks for reading about my problem, it’s a great help 🙂
So, lately, I’ve been having trouble with my message app not displaying the texts I have received. I can see I have received them because they get displayed but once I open the actual text in the message app, I can’t read it fully. I can’t even read the texts I myself have sent.
I can see the beginning of the text I have received when my phone is locked, I can also see the beginning when I unlock my phone and scroll down my home page. I see the little 1 on the message app picture and I can see the beginning of the text when I open the app but I can’t see the text at all when I open the conversation it’s related to.
For example : I know I have received multiple texts from multiple people in the last two hours but I can only read my texts from two hours ago. It’s been happening quite frequently lately and it stops once I delete my conversations but I’d like to not have to do that anymore. Could you please help me? Thank you 🙂 — Sarah
Solution: Hi Sarah. This issue may be app-specific so the best thing to do here is to delete the cache and data of whatever messaging app you’re using. Here’s how to do it:
- Go to Settings.
- Proceed to Applications.
- Select Manage Applications.
- Tap the All tab.
- Choose the name of the app in question and tap it.
- From there, you will see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
Deleting an app’s data is like re-installing it. Doing so would delete your message logs and messages altogether.
I tried to share a video via Simple sharing a couple days ago. Since then the “preparing to upload” notice has not come off my lock screen and the arrow icon in the status bar just keeps running. I’ve tried restarting, I’ve tried turning it completely off and then on again. I went into the setting and tried to adjust the settings. I even deleted a few of the text messages i sent my wife after that. Nothing is working.
My phone has been acting a little “funny” lately as well. I got a notice saying the UICC has access to my phone now, and there was no way say I didn’t want the UICC to have access to my phone; I don’t even know what that is. the problem is the fact that it won’t stop trying to send that message. thanks for the help. — Erik
Solution: Hi Erik. The most likely reason why you are having trouble uploading a video may have something to do with the limitation imposed by your carrier (we believe is Sprint) over MMS. The maximum video file size limitation per message varies by carrier so you need to work with your carrier’s technical support team in sorting this out. Some carriers may impose additional fees to allow sending bigger video files so make sure that this is not what’s keeping you from doing what you want.
Your secondary concern regarding UICC notice popping up can also be resolved by asking assistance from Sprint. UICC stands for Universal Integrated Circuit Card, a special type of smart card similar to a regular SIM card, but provides more advanced capabilities to a device as it allows LTE network authentication and access. If your phone keeps showing a message that UICC is now active, there must be a Sprint-specific setting that you need to change to turn it off.
With the Hangouts app, which I use as my default messaging app, I’ll get a text from someone and receive and audible and status bar notification. Though, any additional texts that come from the same person will not generate a notification. This is very frustrating because I don’t know when people have replied to a text I sent or just sent an additional one. I’ve had angry friends because they don’t hear back from me. Please help! Notifications are turned on and I have a sound assigned that is loud and clear. — Kevin
Solution: Hi Kevin. Sound notifications for Hangouts are turned on by default but you may have unintentionally tweak some settings before that reversed this. Make sure to check that notification sounds are not turned off by doing the following:
- On your computer or Galaxy S6, pull up your Chrome browser and go to hangouts.google.com.
- Go to Settings by clicking a three-lines icon at the upper left hand side of the screen.
- Click “Mute notifications for…” under Notifications to check if this option is NOT enabled. Make sure that the “Mute notifications for…” is showing to keep this option disabled.
- Make sure that Sounds for incoming messages and Ring on incoming phone calls are checked.
You can also check if certain contacts have been muted or blocked:
- On your computer or Galaxy S6, pull up your Chrome browser and go to hangouts.google.com.
- Select the contact from the list of conversations.
- Click on the cog icon at the top right to access Settings menu.
- Make sure that the box next to Notifications is not unchecked.
This issue has happened on and off since it was out of the box. If I send a text message while I have a strong Wi-Fi connection it fails to send using stock text app. I have to shut off Wi-Fi and resend it using mobile data for the text to successfully send. Plot twist, I have the same issue if Wi-Fi is shut off. Text message will fail to send via mobile connection when I have 3 out of 6 (or more)bars showing on my mobile connection. A text will fail to send and I have to turn on Wi-Fi and resend, pushing the text through newly turned on Wi-Fi.
I have cleared system and app cache. I have tried different texting apps-but the issue is always the same. Random text message fails to send. I receive all messages regardless of Wi-Fi or mobile data-I just can’t send. In my particular line of work I see a lot of this issue on the S6 and S6 Edge. I’ve done hard reset only to have the same issue.
Also, could you do an article about the types of symptoms that a bad SIM card can cause? I rarely see this mentioned across the android forums. Thanks! — Cherry
Solution: Hi Cherry. This scenario is definitely interesting and we haven’t encountered it before. We can’t see any connection with Wi-Fi function causing issues with SMS function so this may be an isolated case. We know that there are many variables that can cause a firmware or operating system to stop work normally so your main task is to identify what it is. This is easier said than done though. The best thing that you can do as a start is to do another round of factory reset and try to replicate the problem before installing any third party application. Make sure not to install or download anything for a few hours after doing a factory reset. Just text to your contacts for a few hours and observe. If the problem fails to occur, that’s your hint that a third party app may be to blame.

I recently left my HTC one phone for this S6 Edge. The HTC had a secure folder which I could move all or any of my SMS messages I want to save. This allowed me to maintain a clutter free primary SMS folder while saving all old SMS texts in the secure folder. I could move one or all SMS back and forth between the two folders. The secure folder did require a password to be able to open the folder. I don’t really need to be secretive about messages although it was nice to know the folder was password protected. Bottom line is how or where can I make a duplicate folder in the same directory as SMS storage presently so I can copy messages back and forth using a file manager? — Scott
Problem #: Hi Scott. We’re afraid your Samsung S6 Edge does not have a similar feature to secure an SMS folder like in your previous HTC One. Samsung’s security feature covers broader aspects in your phone via its security feature called Knox. This is done by creating a separate partition with its own separate operating system dedicated to protecting sensitive information and apps. Other third party apps in the Play Store like File Hide Expert, AppLock, and CM Security Antivirus AppLock may offer the exact capability you are looking for. After all, there’s an app for everything these days, right?
Hello. I came across your article on how to troubleshoot the s6/s6 edge. I tried all that was recommended by your site and other sites and still could not send MMS via my s6 edge. I could receive them fine, just not send. I finally broke down and made the dreaded call to my provider, AT&T. First call the gentleman really ticked me off and I hung up on him. After I cooled my hot-head I realized I was shooting myself in the foot and called them back. I was connected to a wonderful customer service rep. Long story short I went through everything I had already done and tried a few things he suggested and still no good. I finally mentioned I had come across an article that spoke of turning on ‘enhanced messaging’ but I did not see that on my phone. He informed me I can’t alter that and only AT&T can. He then said he would activate the enhanced and we could at least try it. Low and behold that was what was needed. The phone started finally sending MMS. I thought enhanced was for very large files, up to a GIG, but clearly that is not the case(at least for AT&T).
I am very grateful this is fixed now but I now wonder if my s6 edge is different from other edge phones NOT on AT&T. Why is my phone different from other phones in the articles? Did AT&T alter my phone before they sold it to me and if so why was I not notified they had done a downgrade to this brand new phone. I bought this phone ~May 2015.
I thought I’d let you know about the fix because others may encounter this issue and the only way to fix it is to have AT&T activate enhanced(if you have AT&T). Thank you. — Linda
Solution: Hi Linda. We’re glad you were able to resolve your MMS issue by calling your carrier.
Every carrier adds their own line of phone services for their subscribers by modifying the stock Google-provided firmware or operating system. Some carriers may either add or remove some built-in Android functions to the stock firmware to promote their own similar functions or products. It is in this sense that your S6s is different from a T-Mobile S6, for example. The firmware running on your S6 is basically slightly different in terms of pre-installed apps and features from S6’s of other carriers.
