S4 Delay & Echo In Call

Problem: I have been talking with a friend in Guatemala through fb messenger. They had a Samsung, but recently switched to a Hauwei. Now they hear me fine, but on my end my phone is not clear. I can’t hear and I can hear a delay in my voice getting to them. I talk, it delays, then they hear and respond to the echo. Please help!

Solution: In cases like this the first thing you need to check is your Internet connection. Since you are ung FB messenger in making a call the quality of the connection is very important in achieving a good call. Try switching to another connection source such as a different Wi-Fi connection or try your mobile data connection to make a call.

If the problem persists then proceed with clearing the cache and data of the Facebook messenger app.

  • From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe to the All screen
  • Tap the desired application
  • Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  • Tap Clear cache.

If you are still experiencing the same problem then try to uninstall the app then reinstall it again.

S4 Not Connecting to Calls After Lollipop Update

Problem: Since updating to lollipop my phone does not connect 1st time to calls .I have done a factory reset and also cache wipes it seems OK for a while then starts again.

Solution: If the factory reset resolves the issue for a while then the issue occurs again try to check what app you may have installed in your phone when the issue starts to occur. This app may be causing the problem.

There’s also the possibility that this may be a network related issue. Try checking on the signal your phone is getting whenever you make a call. If your phone has no signal or only one bar then you may not be able to make any calls.

S4 Gets Signal Only In GSM Mode

Problem: When network mode is in anything except gsm only. The cell signal will intermittently go from near full strength to a circle with a slash (absolutely no signal). This happens in every location I happen to be. If I try to make a call, invariably, my signal drops to zero for a minute before showing a signal and when I again initiate a call it drops to zero. When I do have a signal I have a fast data connection. If I switch to gsm only it works normally. I have read this may be an issue with 4.4.4. I have the latest update,UVUKNK2. When I first got the phone I rooted it and had other problems so I used Odin to reset it to the stock rom. Yes I wiped it before and after. Tmobile has no solution except to buy a new phone. Right now I am stuck using an S4 that can effectively only use low speed data. Do you have any suggestions or have you seen this problem before? Thanks.

Solution: The first thing you need to do is to check if you are in an area with good signal reception.

Next, since you flashed your phone firmware try to check if you used the correct software version intended for your phone model. There are different firmware versions available catering for different variants of the S4 and if you use a different one for your device then you may experience some issues.

Finally, one you have the original stock firmware on your phone check for any software updates that may be available. It may be best if you upgraded to Android Lollipop.

S4 Cannot Answer Calls

Problem: Whenever I receive an incoming call it won’t let me answer it but it will let me reject the call I even tried turning on single tap mode and using the home button to answer  the calls but that doesn’t work either.

Solution: Try restarting your phone first and see if this fixes the problem. When restarting your phone take out its battery then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. Reinsert the battery then turn the phone on.

If the problem still persists then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power Key simultaneously.
  • Release the keys when the Android recovery screen appears.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight Wipe Cache Partition.
  • Press the Power key or Home key (this varies based on the software version of your phone) to select.
  • The phone will display Cache Wipe Complete after a few seconds.
  • Press the volume keys to highlight Reboot System Now.
  • Press the Power key to select.

If you still can’t answer a call the you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

S4 Cannot Make Calls

Problem: Hi, All of a sudden I am not able to make phone calls from my phone. I can’t hear others and others can’t hear me either. I did a few things like removing sim/battery and put it back, etc but nothing seems to be working. Also tried disabling google app as suggested by some users but that’s no good either. Do you have any suggestions please?

Solution: Try checking your SIM first by inserting it in another phone then make a call. If the problem is the same then you may have an issue with your SIM or your account.

If however you don’t experience the call issue while your SIM is used in another phone then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset.

Once the factory reset is complete do not update any apps yet. Try to make a call. If the problem still occurs then this may already be hardware related. Bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
