S4 Not Making Or Receiving Calls & Texts After Lollipop Update

Problem: I recently updated to lollipop against my will.  Ever since then I cannot receive or make calls or texts. This only occurs in my house. I loved kit kat. I did some research and my dbs (is like 113 if not more which is a dead zone from what I read. I got a free cell phone booster from sprint but unfortunately the modem that I use is upstairs in my landlordS house.  It’s clear they don’t want to be inconvenienced. I saw there was a way to go back to kit kat but it seems a little difficult.  (I’m not a geek) please help. Thx

Solution: It looks like the update may have affected the signal reception of your phone. Try restarting your phone first and see if this resolves the issue.

If the problem still persists you should check if this issue is caused by old system data that may have not been completely removed from your phone. To do this you should back up your phone data and do a factory reset.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the problem persists then you should consider if going back to Kit Kat is best for you. Take note that this is not a troubleshooting step supported by Samsung.

S4 No Text Notification After Lollipop Update

Problem: I recently got a notification from AT&T that the system was upgrading and I let it do it’s thing…My phone restarted and it seemed that everything was fine.  But since then, when I receive a text message, there is no audible alert.  The settings are all the same as before, but now there’s no sound.  I’ve tried a soft reset, but it hasn’t helped…any help would be awesome!!

Solution: Here’s what you need to do first. Check on some of the basic settings such as:

  • Volume – make sure that it is set to maximum for notifications
  • Change text message notification tone

Next, try to start your phone in Safe Mode then check if an alert tone can be heard when a text message arrives.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S4’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If you can hear the notification sound then the problem may be caused by a third party app installed in your phone. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the problem still persists even in Safe Mode then I suggest you back up your phone data then do a factory reset.

S4 Stuck In Recovery Booting Screen After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hi, I started a system update this morning and its still going on 7 hours later! The green android is showing with installing system update and the percentage, then when it gets to 100% it buzzes and the samsung galaxy s4 start screen appears with “”recovery booting”” in the top left corner.  Then it goes back to the green android screen again.  Every so often the screen goes blank and it just buzzes every 5 seconds.  When i take the battery out and replace it, it starts doing the above routine again. Hope you can help, thanks.

Solution: One of the best ways to deal with this issue is to wipe the cache partition of your phone.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

If the problem still persists then you should consider doing a factory reset. Take note that this will delete all of the data stored in your phone so only consider this if you have previously made a backup of your phone data.

S4 Software Update Disclaimer Keeps Appearing

Problem: My phone had a software update and I did the software update disclaimer but every time my phone dies or I turn it off and back on it has me confirm it. It has done it several times.

Solution: This issue may just be caused by a glitch in the phone software. Wiping your phone cache partition usually resolves this type of issue.

Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.
