S4 No Text Notification

Problem: just a few weeks ago I noticed that when I am texting that the notification does not always sound when I receive a text.  If I am doing other things and don’t hear the notification, I think i am done talking to that person.  If I look later I see that I have missed a follow up from the same person since I didn’t hear their personal notification. The Verizon store was not able to help.

Solution: This may be a glitch in the phone software. Try to check first if there are any new software updates available for your phone. Apple them if necessary.

If your phone is already running on the latest software update then try to restart your phone. This usually resolves most of the glitches that occur on a device.

You should also consider wiping the cache partition of your phone.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • After the the cache wipe is complete, press the Power key to select reboot system now.
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

If the issue still persists then you need to check if a third party app installed in your phone is causing this problem. To do so you need to start your phone in Safe Mode.

  • Remove the battery from the phone.
  • Re-insert the battery.
  • Press and hold the Menu key.
  • While holding the Menu key, turn on the device.
  • When you see the lock screen, you can release the Menu key.
  • ‘Safe mode’ displays in the lower-left corner.

Once in Safe Mode try to check if the issue still persists. If it doesn’t then it is most likely caused by an app. Find out what app is causing this to happen and uninstall it.

S4 Text Message Sending Failed

Problem: When I send a text message, the message tries to send for a minute or so and then gives the message:  code:-1 failed to send message to (number). When I try to make a call it says “dialing” on the screen but does not make the call or ring and eventually ends the call. However, my phone shows that it is getting 4 bars or so of signal. My carrier is virgin mobile. I have already contacted them but they have not solved the issue as of yet.

Solution: In most cases this issue is usually caused by a problem with the network. Have your carrier check on the towers in your area and see if there is any issue. You should also try to send a message in different locations and see if the issue constantly occurs. Example, try sending a message in your house then drive to a different area such as  to your office or the mall then send a message from there. If the problem only occurs in a specific area then it may be network related.

You should also try updating the PRL of your phone.

  • Select the menu button (located to the right of the home button)
  • Tap Settings
  • Tap More(upper right)
  • Then scroll down and tap System Update
  • Select Update Profile and let it run fully (may take up to 90 seconds)
  • After the network profile is updated, repeat the same steps, but this time select Update PRL instead of update profile

If the issue still persists you should consider doing a factory reset on your phone as several people who have experienced this same issue say that the issue disappeared after the factory reset. Just make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

S4 Not Receiving Text Message From One Contact

Problem: Version 4.2.2. I Cannot receive text messages from one contact. This just suddenly started. He Receives my text msgs. Both have service thru USCelluar.

Solution: Try to check if the number of that one particular contact has been included in the Spam Numbers list of your phone. If it has then you will not see the messages sent by that contact.

  • From the Home screen tap Messaging.
  • Tap Menu > Settings
  • Uncheck the Spam settings check box if you see any check mark in it.

If your spam settings have already been disabled but you are still not getting any messages from the contact then try to restart your phone to clear out any software glitches.

You should also check if a certain third party app installed in your phone is causing this issue by starting your phone in Safe mode.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app installed in your phone. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

S4 Lag In Sending Text Messages

Problem: My text messages take forever to send and stays in “sending” status for a while. In group MMS texts, my texts are always late. I also seem to miss texts in group messages.

Solution: Does this issue occur in one particular area or in any location? If it  only occurs in one area, such as your home, then there may be some network issues. Try to contact your carrier and inquire about this. If there is no issue with the network then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

This issue may be caused by the cached data of your messaging app. Try clearing the cache and data of the messaging app first and see if this resolves the issue.

  • From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe to the All screen.
  • Tap the desired application
  • Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  • Tap Clear cache.

You should also try to wipe the cache partition of your phone.
