S4 Display Settings Get Reset

Problem: When I try to use my S4, when I swipe the screen to unlock it , it will  open in what appears to settings or another function that you would have thought I had set to my liking and would not appear again until I decided to change them. Am I not saving changes properly or what is wrong ?   The S4 is new to me but I bought off a colleague’s husband who has moved on to a S6

Solution: This may be just a glitch in your phone software. You should first make sure that your phone is running on the latest software.

If it already is then do a restart. Take out your phone battery then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This discharges your phone of any remnant power and takes out any data stored in the RAM. Reinsert the battery then turn your phone on. check if the issue still persists.

If the issue persists then you should backup your phone data and do a factory reset.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

S4 Display Unlock PIN Missing

Problem: Hi, yesterday I went to use my phone and was surprised to see the normal dial pad that displays to enter my unlock pin was gone. In its place is a qwerty keyboard that will not accept my pin stating it’s an incorrect password. I can’t unlock the screen to use my phone. I was using fine all day. This happened while watching fireworks if that, on a very very remote possibility caused it.

Solution: This is definitely an issue with the phone software. Try to check first if your phone is running on the latest software update. If it isn’t then update your phone.

If your phone is already running on the latest software and the issue still persists then proceed with wiping the phone cache partition.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • After the the cache wipe is complete, press the Power key to select reboot system now.
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

If the issue still persists then back up your phone data and do a factory reset.

S4 Display Screen Rotation Not Working

Problem: I have a brand new S4 but my screen rotation doesn’t work. What can I do to fix it? I’ve tried factory reset but it still don’t work.

Solution: The first thing you need to check is the auto rotate feature of your phone. Have you enabled this? To enable it, just access Settings. Then, under the My Device selection, go to Display. Scroll down to the Screen section and ensure that the Auto-Rotate Screen option is active or checked. If it is already enabled then try to uncheck it then check it again.

If the problem still persists then you will need to calibrate your phone. First make sure that the auto-rotate screen feature is disabled. Go to Settings. Then, on the My Device tab, scroll down to the Input and Control section and tap Motions and Gestures. Select Gyroscopic Calibration.Place your device on an even surface, like on top of a table. Press the Calibrate button and wait for it to finish. Don’t forget to turn on the Auto-Rotate Screen feature after you finish the calibration.

If you are still experiencing the same problem then try to start your phone in Safe Mode and check if the issue still occurs in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S4’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the problem disappears then it may be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If you are still having the same problem at this point then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset.

If the auto-rotate feature still does not work then you should bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
