Samsung’s AMOLED clad Galaxy Tab S2 goes official in 9.7 and 8 inch variants

Galaxy Tab S2

Samsung has just released the two new Galaxy Tab S2 models, in 9.7 and 8 inch sizes. The tablets have been part of the leaks for quite some time now, so it’s relieving for us tech enthusiasts to know that the series has gone official at long last.

Not so surprisingly, the two models look strikingly similar (at least from the press photos), so it’s hard to tell the two apart. But naturally, the size is the key differentiating factor here with not a lot different in the specs department. The devices are light weight in nature and weigh 389 grams and 265 grams respectively.

What’s remarkable is that Samsung has managed to keep the thickness at 5.6mm for both models, making it the slimmest tablets going around. This could be a key selling point in addition to the Super AMOLED displays on board the two devices.

Both models pack a display resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, same as the iPad Air 2, so the company has ensured that it’s on par with the big players as far as hardware is concerned. The tablets also feature an octa core SoC of unknown make (1.9 GHz quad + 1.3 GHz quad) as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front camera, 3GB of RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage (expandable) and Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The 9.7 inch model comes with a 5,870 mAh battery pack while the smaller 8 inch model is revealed to be packing a 4,000 mAh unit underneath. Given that they’re packing AMOLED panels, the battery consumption should be minimal.

The two tablets will be up for grabs in global markets starting August 2015 according to Samsung. No specific details were provided on the availability and pricing.
