S4 Turns Off On Its Own

Problem: My phone will just die. It will be fine and I put it in my pocket for a little bit then it is the black screen of death. I take the battery out as suggested and it will come back. It is annoying. It started happening after the lollipop update. Is there a fix or do I have to live with this? Also the lock screen numbers will pixilate. They just become white squares. Help!

Solution: Try starting your phone in Safe Mode first to determine if a third party app installed in your phone is causing your phone to turn off on its own.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S4’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then it’s most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If however the issue still occurs then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset. This is a highly recommended step to perform since you mentioned that this issue happened after the Lollipop update. A factory reset usually resolves any issue that may pop up after a software update. This procedure may also help resolve the lock screen number showing as blocks.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

S4 Turns Off When Browsing Or Taking Pictures

Problem: My samsung phone goes off whenever I browse for  sometime …Also goes off whenever i take like 10 or more pictures.

Solution: Your phone battery may already be weak causing this issue to occur. Try getting a new battery and see if this resolves the issue. Make sure to charge the new battery at least 20 minutes before turning the phone on.

If the problem still persists the next thing you need to check is if this problem is caused by your phone software. To do this you will need to do a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding.

If the problem still persists then I suggest bringing your phone to an authorized service center as this may already be a hardware related problem.

S4 Will Not Charge

Problem: I went on vacation and 2 things happened to my phone that might have contributed to my issue 1. Got splashed with some water and I cleaned it right away, 2. Used a charger with 2 ports and found out the next day that this drains the battery every since I used the charger the phone wont charge, I got a new battery but still the phone wont charge. Also when I connect the device to a computer I receive a message that the USB device is not recognized. I hope there is a solution to my issue.

Solution:  The first thing you need to do is to check the USB port of your phone for any signs of dirt or lint. Presence of one or both has been known to cause charging and connectivity issues. Clean the port if necessary using compressed air or a cotton bud dipped in alcohol. You may also use a toothpick.

You should also try to use a different USB cord to eliminate the possibility of you using a defective USB cord.

Try using different wall chargers and see if your phone charges.

To eliminate any software related problems you will need to do a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before proceeding.

If the issue still persists then the internal components of your phone may have been water damaged. Bring your phone to an authorized service center for further checking.

S4 Stuck In Download Mode

Problem: I went to get my phone and it wouldnt turn on so i took out the battery and now i have the green droid guy telling me do not turn off..updating, what do i do?

Solution: If your phone is still running on its stock software then this may just be caused by a glitch in the phone data. Try to take out your phone battery as well as the microSD if you have one installed. Press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This drains your phone of any residual charge and clears out its RAM. Reinsert the battery but leave the microSD out. Turn on your phone.

If your phone is still experiencing the same issue then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your device.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • After the the cache wipe is complete, press the Power key to select reboot system now.
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

S4 Does Not turn On After Software Update

Problem: Phone wanted to do an up date months ago. Opted to keep kit kat…So last night the phone was at 1% and was put on charge. The screen would come on for x amnt of time and then go off. It did this several time so i moved the phone thinking the cord was not in an ideal location so after i moved it it stayed charging and i left it alone for 15 min. Hit the home button and it said it was charging. So about 40 min later i checked the phone and it showed… Downloading do not turn off target and i may be paraphrasing slightly, but it had an android robot on the screen and in the top left corner some very small writing and some of the text was red the rest was black text. If you told me what it said it would ring a bell but i cant remember what it said now. So I left the phone alone and came back an hour later and the phone was dead. No charging light nothing. Ive tried all the holding down of buttons and removing the battery and sd card. Its been about 7 hrs now with no charge and  batt isnt hot or warm for that matter. I did connect to the computer and it was not a recognized device. I am at a loss at this point…Thanks Erika

Solution: Try taking out the battery and microSD card then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. Reinsert the battery then turn on your phone. If you still don’t get any response then leave it charging using the wall charger for at least 20 minutes then turn it on.

If the issue persists try using a different USB cord when charging your phone. Charge your phone using the new USB cord for at least 20 minutes.

If you are still not getting any response at all from your phone then bring it to an authorized service center as this may already be a hardware related problem.
