How to fix a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that’s not charging

This post serves as your troubleshooting guide in case your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge won’t charge. Whether you are charging with Samsung’s manufacturer charger or a wireless charging pad, charging issues are among the most common problems any Android smartphone owner may face. It is also among the problems that need to be addressed immediately as your phone will only sit atop your table when it totally depletes its battery.

The owner may only have an idea that his/her phone isn’t charging when the battery is totally drained and the charging signs won’t show up when the device is plugged in. At this stage, many owners may panic thinking that their expensive piece of technology may already be busted.

But just because your Galaxy S6 Edge’s battery isn’t charging doesn’t mean you need to have the battery replaced immediately. Remember that before electric current reaches the battery, it passes through a logic board and gets recognized by the Android system and the firmware itself.

Galaxy S6 Edge won’t charge in car

Problem: So, I recently got a new Galaxy S6 Edge phone with Sprint and so far, the phone is doing all of its advertised functions and features but charging in my car. All my other phones are charging fine with my car. But the thing I’m really confused about is that the phone charges fine when I plug the charger into the wall outlet using the original charger that came with the box. So, I think it’s not really a hardware or port issue. It’s just so annoying that it won’t charge in my car using my car charger. Do you guys know what the problem is and how I can fix it? — Clarisse

Troubleshooting: Hi Clarisse. Apparently, the phone isn’t the problem here because it’s charging with its original charger. On the other hand, your car charger is also functioning with other devices. So, that leaves the USB cable in question. Try using a different cable that you know works and if your phone still refuses to charge using your car charger, then the problem is with the charger–it may not have enough amperage to be able to push electric current into the battery. Samsung devices need chargers with 2 Amps rating.

Fast charging not working on new Galaxy S6 Edge

Problem: Hi Harold. I’ve been reading your posts on Galaxy S6 Edge for a couple of days now because new phone’s fast charging feature isn’t working. I have friends who also have the Edge and I asked them if there is a setting that needs to be turned on or enabled to make fast charging work, they said fast charging capability is native to the phone. So, I’m confused why my new phone isn’t charging as fast as advertised. It’s about 8 days old. What should I do? — Ellaine

Troubleshooting: Hi Ellaine. I will assume you’re using the charger that came with the main unit because if not, then that’s the problem. The original charger is capable of adaptive fast charging while third-party chargers aren’t.

Also, if the phone heats up when plugged in, the fast charging feature will not work; the same thing happens if the screen is on. So, verify the phone isn’t heating up and turn the screen off while charging. If the fast charging feature still doesn’t work, have the phone replaced. After all, it’s still within replacement period. A new phone should work without issues, so it’s better you have it replaced as early as now than deal with the problem until your contract expires.

Galaxy S6 Edge isn’t charging at all

Problem: My Galaxy S6 Edge is just more than a month old and everything was working well a week ago, now it just won’t charge. When I plug it in, it won’t respond. The usual charging icon won’t display and the LED won’t light up. What’s the problem here? Can you help me guys? — Jason

Troubleshooting: Hello Jason. First of all, make sure you’re using the original charger that came with the device and that the USB cable is properly mounted in the charger and the port on your phone. There is a possibility that it’s an issue with the charging unit itself or just the cable. So, let’s try to rule out possibilities here. First, using the original USB cable, try to connect your phone to your computer and see if it gets detected. If not, then it’s probably a cable problem, so you know what to do next in this case.

However, if the phone gets detected by your computer, try to set your focus on the charger itself. If you have other phones, try charging them using your S6 Edge’s charger. If they, too, won’t charge, then buy a new charger.

If you’ve successfully ruled out that it’s neither the charger nor the cable that’s having a problem, then the issue is with your phone. You will now have to rule out the possibility that it’s just a firmware issue and the first thing to do is boot your Galaxy S6 Edge in safe mode:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
  5. When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.

When in safe mode, try charging your phone and if it failed again, backup all your data and perform full hard reset. After all, the first thing a technician would do is reset the phone so it’s better you do it before he does. If the problem is fixed with you doing it, then you just saved yourself from all the hassle of going to a tech shop, explaining what the problem is and answering questions.

Full Hard Reset

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Galaxy S6 Edge won’t charge after an update

Problem: Hi guys! There was an update recently which I downloaded to my S6 Edge. After the installation, my phone seemed to have used up all its battery leaving it with just 7%. So, I charged my phone and to my surprise, it didn’t respond at all. I rebooted it several times already but it still won’t charge. Now, I’m on 2% and a few minutes from now, the phone will shut down but I still haven’t managed to get it to charge. Why is this happening? Help me. — Lorie

Troubleshooting: Hello Lorie. If the problem occurred after an update, then it must be just a glitch. More often than not, the new firmware will corrupt some caches and data leaving some inconsistencies in the system itself. In this case, it seems like the charging function is the one that’s affected.

The first thing I suggest you do is soft reset: just press and hold the Power and Volume Down keys for 10 seconds until the phone powers down. While turned off, plug the phone to charge. It is almost certain the problem like this is fixed at this point. Otherwise, I recommend you wipe the cache partition if there’s enough battery left, if not, then you need help from a tech.

Wipe Cache Partition

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

  8. This worked for me! My S6 Edge Plus was not charging whatsoever and I was afraid that I needed to go into the store. I called T-Mobile Customer Service and they told me that I would need another phone. Thankfully, I found this because it worked. My phone is now charging! Thanks so much

  9. Nailed it!!
Most of the smartphones supports fingerprint touch ID, But there is no exception for the 6.0-inch vkworld T1 Plus, Vkworld official makes a video to show how to use this function. You can review their latest video on youtube channel 🙂

  10. You’re a hero! Thanks for this fantastic tip – exactly the same problem and exactly the same solution. Seems a bit ridiculous that such a sophisticated piece of technology can be hampered by so simple an issue, but it’s great to know that this is the root cause! (I guess I’ve got a few unnecessary micro USB cables hanging around now though 😉 )

    Thanks again!

  11. Solution! Use something small, like as a toothpick, to ‘lever up’ the little tab inside the USB port. (And maybe clean out some lint while you’re in there).

This worked like a charm for me after trying everything else:
    -multiple cables, adapters, wall sockets
-restarted, cleared cache, booted in safe mode, soft reset, factory reset
But in the end the cable tip was simply not making good contact with the phone USB port.

It all started with a weird VR glitch flashing on and off my screen, which I’ve seen other people post about too. But I see now that that was a symptom, not a cause.

  15. any 1 having a problem of not charging and having a issue of power sharing ? the solution is simply charge your s6 edge with a wireless charger. Untill samsung finds a solution of not charging while power sharing issue.

  16. Success. My phone simply wasn’t charging (10 days old). Eventually drained to nothing and power would show a battery outline with thunderbolt, but no progress.

I followed the instructions to reboot (power key/down arrow). First time, I chose “Normal” and the phone rebooted and the issue remained.
Second time, I followed “Safe” and the phone rebooted and the issue remained. I called Tech Support (having just bought the phone), and before the young lady started her script, the phone started to power up 1%, then 2%.

It’s currently at 3% and I’ve got to get back to work, but I wanted to post this since your site has been helpful to me. I don’t know why it happened…and I’m probably going to go into the store since I’m within 14 days and get a replacement, but for now, I’m charging.

  17. the same problem happened to me. i couldnt charge my s6 and it wouldnt read that there was a charger in. i used both my parents s6 chargers as well. so i rebooted in safe mode and its charging. is it fixed now or must i charge in safe mode for ever
