Verizon Galaxy S5 Lollipop Update Didn’t Install

Problem: I was hoping maybe you guys can help me. Around first week of April I did get the notification of the availability of the new firmware. I waited a day before I hit the download button. The download was successful but the phone reboots shortly after that and when I checked the version of the firmware, it was still in Kitkat. Needless to say, the update didn’t install. But the notification didn’t appear again and when I manually search through Settings, the phone says it’s running the latest firmware, which is 4.4. Please help me update my phone to lollipop. By the way, it’s a Galaxy S5 and I get my service from Verizon. — Justin

Troubleshooting: Hi Justin. You’re not the only one having this problem. The solution to this issue is to download the update again but as you said, the phone says it’s already running the latest firmware and that the notification is gone. It’s because the phone already attempted to download it but the installation failed. Somehow, there’s already a trace of the firmware in the memory of the phone. Here’s how you fix this problem:

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
  4. Swipe right to the ALL screen.
  5. Scroll to and tap Download Manager.
  6. Tap Clear cache button.
  7. Tap Clear data button, then OK.

Verizon Galaxy S5 ‘Can’t Download MMS’ Error

Problem: Hello droid guys. I’ve been enjoying your posts on Galaxy S5 problems. I have a Verizon-branded unit, which I recently updated to the latest firmware. I thought all went well because after the update the phone performs better than before and I never encountered issues reported by your readers. But just yesterday when I received a picture message from a friend, there was an error that popped up: “Can’t download MMS. Check APN settings and tap to retry.”

I’m not tech-savvy so this is all French to me. What the heck is the APN? And why am I receiving this error message when everything went smooth? Please shed some light to my issues. Thank you. — Carl

Troubleshooting: There is always a possibility that the APN would be messed up during the update; either it’s changed or deleted. I don’t want to technically explain what the APN is but in layman’s terms, the APN is a set of data you need to enter to your phone so it can connect to your provider’s data network. When sending picture messages or MMS, the phone needs mobile data to do so. Therefore, to fix this problem, you need to fix the APN settings. Now try this…

  1. On the device, tap the Menu icon.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Wireless & networks.
  4. Make sure Wi-Fi is Off (you can change this later) and Mobile network is On (or checked).
  5. Tap on Mobile network.
  6. Tap on Access Point Names.
  7. Press the Menu key and tap Reset to Default.

If this procedure failed, call Verizon and ask the representative to send you the correct APN and walk you through setting it up or editing the existing one in your phone.

Verizon Galaxy S5 Opens Black Screen After Lollipop

Problem: Hi guys! I have a very weird problem that started after I installed lollipop on my phone. One day, I received the notification so I immediately downloaded it. The process was successful and I actually was able to use the phone for a few hours. After that, there was this black screen that popped up and the phone became unresponsive but it’s still powered on because the soft keys are still lit up. I have to take the battery out to reboot the phone then I would be able to use the phone for a few minutes before the black screen pops up again. Can you guys recommend a solution for this? Thanks! — Antoinette

Troubleshooting: Hello Antoinette! I, too, am curious to know or see what that black screen does and where it came from. But whatever it is, the problem can still be narrowed down to firmware issue or hardware problem. When it comes to software issues, it covers everything that runs on the phone including both pre-installed and third-party apps and Android system itself. It’s easier to fix if the problem is software-related because we can troubleshoot.

Let’s isolate the problem by booting the phone in safe mode. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

While in safe mode, observe closely if the black screen still pops up. If not, then the problem is with one of the third-party apps. It probably just a splash screen of the app that has rogue after lollipop update. So, you need to find out which app is causing it and then update it (if there’s an available update) or just uninstall and then re-install it.

However, if the problem also occurs in safe mode, proceed with full hard reset but try to backup your important data first.

Full Master Reset

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

I can’t browse any website, can’t download apps from the Play Store and can’t even check my email. Second, there’s this error message that keeps popping up (randomly); “Unfortunately, Touchwiz has stopped.” More often it pops up when I return to the home screen and sometimes it shows when I open apps. Please help me fix these issues. Thank you! — Angeline

  6. Tap Clear cache button.
  7. Tap Clear data button, then OK.

Verizon Galaxy S5 Freezes After Bootup

Problem: The recent lollipop update messed up the phone for me. I own a Verizon branded Galaxy S5, which I updated the software a few days ago. I don’t know if the update was successful or not because I initiated the download and left the phone for a few hours because I had to run a few errands. When I came back, the phone was on its Home screen already but it won’t respond to anything. I removed the battery and phone rebooted but immediately after it reaches the home screen, it freezes. I tried booting it in safe mode, the same thing. I wanted to reset it but can’t access Settings. So, please, help me how to factory reset it. I don’t care if my data will be lost, they’re not that important. I just want my phone back. Thanks. — Josephine

  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Verizon Galaxy S5 ‘Settings Has Stopped’ Error

Problem: Hi, I have this Verizon Galaxy S5 for 3 months now and I can say that the performance of the device is amazing. However, just this week the issue occurs after I updated phone’s software to lollipop. On the screen of the device a message is always popping up saying “Unfortunately, Settings has stopped”. Please help! – James

Troubleshooting: Hello James, regarding your issue it seems like the firmware and the cache partition of the device was corrupted due to the recent update. To fix the issue you can try wiping the cache partition. This is a directory where all caches that the phone has been using are stored. By doing the following procedure, they will be deleted and will be replaced by newer and fresher files:

  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

This procedure alone can fix the issue, however, if it persists, then, you don’t have a choice but to hard reset the device. Just make sure you backup all your important files and data because they will be deleted.

Verizon Galaxy S5 Can’t Recognize Original Charger

Problem: Hello guys, I have this annoying issue after I updated my Verizon S5 to lollipop. During the first 2 days after the update, my mobile phone is working fine but when I woke up in the morning to charge it the device won’t charge. And there’s a message on the screen saying that the charger is incompatible. So, I tried the charger of my mom because we have same phones but after I plug it to my phone the message still pop-up on the screen. I don’t know how to fix it and I hope you can help me with my issue. Thanks! – Rod

Troubleshooting: Hi Rod, this issue is not common and I don’t think the recent update brought it to your phone. However, if the problem persists after that, have your provider take a look at it.
