Galaxy S6 Edge Home screen and Extended Home screens overview

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge comes with a Home screen that extends beyond the initial screen. More screens will be displayed by swiping the screen right or left. Among the basic items or components that comprised the Edge Home screen include the notification area, status area, status bar, people edge, widget, applications icons, apps list and primary shortcuts.

More details of the Galaxy S6 Edge Home screen items:

  • Notification Area – Located on the left side of the Status Bar, the notification area is where notifications for incoming messages, missed calls, and applications updates are shown.
  • Status Area – The status area of the Status Bar on the right edge is where the phone and service status information like signal strength, battery status, Wi-Fi and data connectivity, ringer status, and time are being displayed.
  • Status Bar – The Edge status bar shows icons to notify you of your phone’s status on the right side and notifications on the left side.
  • People Edge – Also called My People tab, People Edge is located right beneath the status bar. You can tap this tab to quickly open the People Edge menu.
  • Widget – Comprises self-contained onscreen applications found on your phone’s Home screen.
  • Applications icons – Are shortcut icons to your favorite applications. You can add or remove these shortcuts whenever you want.
  • Apps list – Allows you to open or launch the applications list. The apps list key is a primary shortcut available from all Home screens.

Aside from the Home screen, the new Galaxy S6 Edge also features extended Home screens that offer more space for you to add icons, widgets, and more. To display the main Home screen, press the Home key and then drag across the screen to move from the main screen to an extended screen.

More quick tips:

  • To go to an extended Home screen, swipe right or left.
  • To return to the main Home screen while on an extended screen, press the Home key.

Galaxy S6 Edge Screen Notification Options Configuration

You can configure which notifications to show on the Edge screen, Edge lighting options and priority contacts. Among the features that activate when your phone is turned over or display side down are the Edge lighting and Quick reply.

What is Edge Lighting and how to use it?

The Edge lighting works by illuminating the Edge screen when a notification is received while the device is lying face down. Here’s how to enable or turn on Edge lighting on the Galaxy S6 Edge:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home
  2. Scroll to and touch Settings to continue.
  3. Under Settings menu, scroll to and touch Edge screen.
  4. Touch Edge lighting from the Edge screen.
  5. If the slider next to ON says Off, touch the slider to turn on or enable Edge lighting feature on your device.

What is Quick Reply and how to use it on the Galaxy S6 Edge?

You can access Quick Reply by the time you enable/disable the Edge Lighting. Here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Edge screen.
  4. Touch Edge lighting.
  5. From the Edge lighting screen, you can find the Quick reply option

Hint: Touch Quick reply, if you want to access a feature that allows you to reject a call with a message, and enable the feature by setting the On/Off switch to ON.

  1. Touch Quick reply messages, to edit a message or text reply.
  2. To save changes, tap the Back key when finished.

Working with other Edge screen features

What is People Edge and how to use it?

When People edge is enabled on your device, different colors light up the Edge screen when you get notifications from the contacts you have designated as My People. The color of the indicator will be that assigned to the contact who is calling or messaging.

Follow these steps to enable and use People Edge on your device?

  1. Touch Apps from the Home
  2. Touch Settings to continue.
  3. Scroll to and touch Edge screen.
  4. Touch People edge from the Edge screen options.
  5. Touch the ON/OFF switch on the upper-right to turn on or enable People edge.
  6. Touch My People to continue.
  7. Under My people, touch Add contact to choose a contact to be assigned to a specific color.
  8. Touch to select a contact from the Contacts list.
  9. To add other contacts, repeat steps 7 and 8.
  10. Touch the Back key to go back to the People edge menu when you’re done adding contacts.
  11. Touch the slider next to Alert when picking up to turn it on, if necessary. Enabling this option will let you receive an alert when you pick up the device if you’ve received a notification from the designated contacts.
  12. Press the Home key when you’re done.
  13. To open My People, go to the Home screen and then swipe the My people tab to the left. My people tab is located on the upper-right corner of the Home screen right beneath the status bar.
  14. To have access for calling or messaging options for a specific contact, touch any contact.

How to select Edge Notifications?

Follow these steps to choose which types of notifications you want to receive on the Edge screen when the phone is lying face down:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch Edge screen from the Settings menu.
  4. Touch Select notifications from the Edge screen options.
  5. Touch the slider next to each type of notification to turn it ON or OFF. Among available options include Missed call, Messages, and Email.

Note: Notifications that are turned ON or enabled will trigger Edge lighting when you receive that type of notification on your device.

How to display the Date & Time on the Galaxy S6 Edge Screen?

Night clock shows the date and time on the Edge screen while the main screen is OFF. Follow these steps to display data and time on the Galaxy S6 Edge screen.

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch Edge screen from the Settings menu.
  4. Touch Night clock from the Edge screen options.
  5. Touch the slider to turn on or enable Night clock.
  6. To set the Start time and End time for Night clock, touch the arrows on the clock numbers. The maximum duration for Night clock is 12 hours.

Your device will then display a low-light clock on the Edge screen when the main screen is off during the set hours.

How to use the Galaxy S6 Edge Screen Position?

The Edge screen on both sides of your device lets you choose whether you want Edge screen information such as My People and Night Clock to display on the right or left side. Follow these steps to enable and use Edge screen position on your new mobile device.

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch Edge screen.
  4. Touch Edge screen position from the Edge screen options.
  5. Now choose either Right side or Left side. Right side is enabled by default, so try to enable left side to see the difference.

What is Information Stream and how to use it on the Galaxy S6?

Also referred to as the Edge screen information, Information stream is where you can find relevant information like news, notifications, and more even when the device screen is turned off. Follow these steps to use Information stream on the Galaxy S6 Edge:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch Edge screen.
  4. Touch Information stream from Edge screen options.
  5. Touch the slider to turn on or enable Information stream when necessary.
  6. To tell the device what information to show, touch Manage feeds.
  7. Check the box next to each feed you want to be displayed. To get more feed options, touch Download feeds.
  8. Touch the Back key to go back to the Information stream menu when done.
  9. Now, touch Edge screen timeout.
  10. Select any from the given Edge screen timeouts or how quickly you want the Edge screen to turn off after you stop touching it.
  11. Touch Weather from the Information stream menu to have access to the latest weather updates.
  12. When prompted, review the information about potential charges and then touch OK to continue.
  13. When prompted to allow your device to use your current location, touch Agree to proceed.
  14. Touch the Back key to return to the Information stream menu.
  15. Adjust any settings you want to change by pressing the Power/Lock key to turn off the screen and see how this feature works.
  16. Swipe your finger along the Edge screen and then back in one quick motion to view the information.
  17. To see or view other feeds, swipe your finger to the left or right.

Customizing the Edge Screen

Following are step-by-step methods to customize the Edge screen features including adding/removing a shortcut, adding/removing a widget, adding/removing a home screen, changing the default home screen, changing the wallpaper, and add more apps to My Home Screens.

Adding/Removing a Shortcut on the Galaxy S6 Edge screen

The Home screen shortcut launches the applications installed on your mobile device. You can choose which shortcuts are to be displayed on the Home screens. Read on to learn how.

How to add shortcut:

  1. Swipe to the left of the Home screen indicator area to navigate to the Home screen where you want to add a shortcut.
  2. Touch Apps to continue.
  3. Locate the application you want, and then touch and hold the application icon. The new shortcut hovers over the Home screen.
  4. While still holding the icon, position it on the screen and release it.

How to remove shortcut:

  1. Swipe to the left over the Home screen indicator area to navigate to the Home screen where you want to delete a shortcut.

Note: Please note that deleting a shortcut does not delete the application itself. Instead, it only removes the shortcut from the current Home screen.

  1. Touch and hold the shortcut you want to delete until the edit screen appears.
  2. While still holding the icon, drag it over the Remove icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Release the icon to delete the shortcut from the Home screen.

Adding/Removing a Widget on the Galaxy S6 Edge screen

Widgets refer to Home screen applications that provide the latest overview of significant information like weather. Widgets also allow you to perform tasks like dialing a contact or pausing a song. Read on to learn more.

How to add a widget:

  1. Swipe to the left of the Home screen indicator area to navigate to the Home screen where you want to add a widget.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area of the screen.
  3. Touch Widgets.
  4. Swipe to the left of the widget you want to add to a Home screen and then touch and hold it until the edit screen displays.

Note: Some widgets may offer different size options. Touch to select the option you desired.

  1. Continue holding the widget, and then move it to the area where you want to it to be added.
  2. Release the widget to place it on the Home screen.
  3. If prompted, select options from the widget.

Note: A frame around the widget is shown if the widget is resizable. To adjust the size of the widget, touch and drag the edge of the frame.

  1. When you are satisfied with the new size, release the widget.
  2. Touch anywhere outside the widget to exit the edit mode.

How to remove a widget:

  1. Swipe to the left of the Home screen indicator area to navigate to the Home screen where you want to delete a widget from.
  2. Touch and hold the widget until the edit screen displays.
  3. Drag the widget to the Remove icon located at the top of the screen.
  4. Release it there to remove the widget from the Home screen.

Adding/Removing a Home Screen on the Galaxy S6 Edge

The new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge supports multiple Home screens that you can arrange in any order. You can populate these Home screens with application shortcuts, widgets, and folders. Read on to learn how to add and remove a Home screen on your S6 Edge device.

How to add a Home screen:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of any Home screen.
  2. Swipe to the left until you reached the Home screen that contains the plus sign. Doing so will let you add a Home screen.
  3. Touch the plus sign and a new Home screen will display.
  4. Swipe to the Home screen you want to move to change the order of the Home screens.
  5. Touch and hold the Home screen, and then drag it to the left or right to change the order it appears from your other Home screens.
  6. Release the Home screen to set its locations.

How to remove a Home screen:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of any Home screen.
  2. Swipe to the Home screen you want to delete or remove, and then touch and hold the Home screen.
  3. Drag the Home screen to the Remove icon at the top of the screen, and then release it there to remove it from your Home screens.

Changing the default Home screen on the Galaxy S6 Edge

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. To set a Home screen as the default from the Edit mode, swipe to the desired Home screen, and then touch the Home icon located at the top of the screen. Doing so will use the selected Home screen for your device to display when you press the Home key.
  3. To exit the Edit mode, press the Home key.

How to change wallpaper on the Galaxy S6 Edge

You can personalize your Home screen and lock screen with preloaded wallpapers or your favorite pictures. Here’s how:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of the screen.
  2. Touch Wallpapers.
  3. Touch the drop-down box located at the top of the screen and then choose any from the given options.
  4. For this guide, we will choose Home screen so touch Home screen to continue.
  5. Touch a location where you want to pick a wallpaper from. For example, From Gallery.

Hint: To view more of the available wallpapers for the Home screen, swipe to the left.

  1. By default, the display is Time. Touch Time to view other display options.
  2. Touch Albums.
  3. Touch an album to select a wallpaper from an album.
  4. Touch to select the picture you want to use and set as wallpaper.
  5. Touch Done to apply changes.

Adding More Applications to My Home Screens

With the Edge screen grids, you can customize the number of application shortcuts available on your Edge Home screens. Here’s how:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area of any Home screen to adjust the Screen grid.
  2. Touch Screen grid to continue.
  3. By default, the screen grid is set to 4×4. You can change it to other options like a 4×5 grid or a 5×5 grid to increase the number of application shortcuts that can be displayed on the screen.
  4. Touch to select a screen grid option you preferred.
  5. The current shortcuts will then be shown in the new grid format. Touch Apply if you are satisfied with the new grid format on your screen.
