Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy S5 won’t send MMS and unable to perform group text conversation

Problem: First off, I have the Samsung Galaxy S5. It is the AT&T version, but I have Straight Talk service. Is the Lollipop update available for me and if so, how do I download it? If not, when will it be available?  My other issue is that I cannot send pictures via text nor have group text conversation. I have contacted Straight Talk and they provided me with APN settings, but this is not working. Would you be able to provide me with the correct settings? Thank you. — Elissa

Troubleshooting: Hi Elissa. The Google Android Lollipop update’s distribution is left to service providers so there’s no telling when your device will get it. There’s a big certainty that your Samsung Galaxy S5 will receive the update though. It should only be a matter of time as it has been months since mid-January when the first update was rolled out for Samsung devices. Just make sure to check Settings > About phone > Software update to see if an OTA (over-the-air) update is available.

For your other issue, the best course of action would be to call Straight Talk again to notify them of your phone’s inability to send MMS or group conversations. Both of these problems usually boils down to incorrect network configuration, which unfortunately, only Straight Talk can solve. As far as we know, below is the most accurate APN values for Straight Talk users:

Name: Straight Talk

APN: tfdata

Proxy: Not Set

Port: Not Set

Server: Not Set

MMSC: http://mms-tf.net

MMS Proxy:  mms3.tracfone.com

MMS Port: 80

Keep in mind that Straight Talk may have changed something in one of these fields, causing the problem.

Another possible reason why you are unable to send MMS and group conversations is a restriction on your billing account itself. Kindly have them check your account restrictions to see if there’s something that you can do to alter them.

How to turn off  Heart Rate monitor on Samsung Galaxy S5

Problem: My phone updated to Lollipop about 2 weeks ago. I have found the battery draining very fast on some days, lasts forever on other days, regardless of Wi-Fi or anything else being used or even enabled. Another issue is my heart rate monitor (built-in just below the camera) turns on anytime it is covered, regardless of it touching my finger or just being set on the table. I’m sure that is contributing to the battery life issue. I don’t have any apps installed that even make use of the heart rate monitor, but I can’t turn it off. I’m very familiar with Android and have done all the basic trouble shooting. I followed your instructions for clearing the cache for the whole phone. This didn’t fix any of my issues except the contacts crashing. I’m still waiting to see if that helped with the random restarting of my phone several times a day, it seems to have been fixed though.

Any idea of how to disable or at least control the heart rate monitor now that S-health is gone? — Jasmine

Troubleshooting: Hi Jasmine. If you already uninstalled or disabled S Health app, chances are there’s another app that may still be using the sensor passively.  Try to go over your list of apps again (especially health related ones) to see if you missed something. Other users have reported turning off Google Fit solved the issue for them so try checking if you have it.  If Google Fit is active, try to check its settings and disable Activity recognition. Doing this would turn the app’s requirement for the sensor.

If that will not resolve the issue still, please do a factory reset.

How to merge/link Samsung Galaxy S5 contacts and use them in Verizon Messages+

Problem: Hi. Like everyone else, I have been having some problems with my phone after the update. My problems were not really serious, just some of my basic apps did not look or respond the way they did before the update. My problems are within the contacts and text messaging features. In my contacts, I have many duplicates. I know this is because some are from Google, Facebook, phone, Yahoo, etc. I want to only have one contact and use the Facebook picture (if they are on Facebook). There are a couple of contacts that when I link them, they force the Google picture as the one that shows up. How do I fix that?

Also, I want to use the Verizon Message+ as my text message app.  When I set that as my default message app, the only face picture that shows up in the list of text messages is the Google picture (which are very few). Everyone else has a blank face. When I set my text messages app to Messages (Samsung’s app), the Facebook faces are there.  On multi-group messages, just blank faces are on the original text message in the list, but when you open the text, the Facebook faces are there. 

Can you help me get the face pictures on Verizon’s Message+ app? Thank you for your help. — Judy

Troubleshooting: Hi Judy. We know how annoying it can be to have all those duplicate contacts so please follow these steps on how to tidy up your S5. Your Samsung Galaxy S5 has a built-in tool just for this problem (glad Samsung has anticipated this trouble) so this process can be done faster.

  • Open the phone’s App drawer where you can see all your apps.
  • Tap Contacts app.
  • Scroll through your list of contacts to identify the contacts you want to combine or link.
  • Tap on a contact and then look for the option that says Connected via.
  • Tap the link icon on the right of Connected via to start the process of linking the duplicate contacts.
  • Touch Link another Contact to see some suggestions and so you can search through your contacts.
  • Select the contacts you want to merge and tap the Back button.

 

If you want to identify what contacts share the same information and you want to merge them, please follow the steps below:

  • Open the Contacts app.
  • Tap the three-dots menu in the upper right hand side of the screen.
  • Tap Link Contacts to see the screen where you can sort by phone number, name, or email addresses. You can then tap on the contacts to link them.
  • After selecting the contacts you want to merge, tap Done to link the contacts.

For your other question regarding making Verizon Messages+ as your default messaging app, the answer actually lies on how the app configures itself to a particular device. Because this is a pre-installed app from your provider, it’s best if you can get answers directly from them to avoid confusion. We believe though that once you have merged or combined all your contacts properly, Messages+ should follow whatever list of contacts you have on your phone without any problems.

How to stop a Samsung Galaxy S5 from converting SMS to MMS

Problem: Hello. When I write a long text message (more than 160 characters), my S5 converts the message to a MMS Media Message. My girlfriend has an S4 and when she types a long message, her phone automatically breaks the message into multiple messages and then sends them in order without the need for data usage. Can I change a setting on my S5 so that when I write a long message, it will break it up into parts and send it as multiple messages instead of converting to a Media message? I typically leave my data off and it’s really annoying to have to turn it on every time I want to send a long message.

Troubleshooting: Hi Justin. Assuming that you’re using the stock Messaging app, there can be a few things that you need to check on this one but we recommend that you ensure that the MMS Creation mode is set to Free instead of Restricted. To do it, open the messaging app, go to its settings, and set Creation mode to Free. Doing so allows your device to send SMS messages that are over 160 characters long.

Samsung Galaxy S5 unable to connect to AT&T data network

Problem: Hi Android Guy. I just recently purchased an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S5 phone and I have no internet connection. I’ve tried doing several troubleshooting things that I’ve read online but still nothing. My SIM card is for the AT&T network. I can’t keep using Wi-Fi because it drains my battery and Wi-Fi isn’t available everywhere. Can you help? I paid a lot of money not to be able to use this major function on my phone. Troubleshooting: Hi Tanya. Is this the first time that the phone has attempted to connect to AT&T’s data network? If it is, the problem may lie on incorrect network configuration. The first logical troubleshooting step would be to call AT&T to make sure that the device is properly provisioned to work with their system. Basically, the aim for your call would be to check with them if the SIM card you are using is compatible as well as give your phone the correct network values so it can work without any problems with the network you are trying to connect to. Another reason why you want to call AT&T support is to make certain that you have a compatible data plan. Assuming that there are no hardware problems on your phone causing it not to connect to a data network, the issue may be caused by incorrect APN settings. If this is your first time to check your S5’s APN settings, please follow these steps below:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Find Wireless & Networks or More Networks.
  • Tap Mobile Networks.
  • Select Access Point Names.
  • Find the option to add a new APN, usually indicated by a “+” icon.
  • Enter the values below:
    • Name: ATT Phone
      APN: phone
      Proxy: Not set
      Port: Not set
      Username: Not set
      Password: Not set
      Server: Not set
      MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
      MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net

Samsung Galaxy S5 freezing issue after an update

Problem: Dear Sir. I am using the Samsung Galaxy S5. After update installation, my phone gets stuck quite often and the display is not seen for a short time . It is  after pressing for a long time, the display is shown. I ask your help. — Antony

Troubleshooting: Hi Antony. Your issues, especially that of the display loss not showing, strike us as something unusual from the many issues our readers report to us everyday. We suggest that you delete the phone’s cache to delete unwanted data and stuff carried over after an update. Below are the steps on how to delete your phone’s cache:

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold Power, Volume Up, and Home buttons at the same time.
  • Once the Android Recovery screen shows up, release the buttons.
  • Scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition using the Volume buttons then press the Power button to confirm it.
  • Go ahead with Reboot System Now option once it becomes available on the screen.

If deleting the cache partition won’t help in this case, please proceed to resetting the phone to its factory defaults.

Samsung Galaxy S5 from Globe (Philippines) losing data connectivity after Lollipop update

Problem: Hi guys. I have just updated my S5 to Lollipop awhile ago. My problem is that I cannot connect to my mobile network. I can’t send messages or make calls or use mobile data. My Wi-Fi works perfectly. I’m from the Philippines and my provider is Globe. I’ve tried rebooting it several times. All it would do is show my provider for 3 seconds and then it would say that no mobile network has been found. When I click the mobile data icon to turn on my Internet, it would say insert SIM card.

I’ve tried my SIM card with other phones and it works fine. I’ve also tried to insert a different SIM card to my S5 and it has the same issue. I’ve tried wiping the cache from startup but still no go. I also tried Safe Mode just to see if any of my apps is affecting it but still no good. Please help. — Sarah

Troubleshooting: Hi Sarah. We are yet to receive a similar issue from our readers from the Philippines so we take this as unique to your phone. Have you called Globe  to notify them about this issue? If Lollipop roll outs in the Philippines has just begun, it would really help your network keep track of the bugs affecting their services if you can report this trouble to them.

The only effective solution that Samsung and Google suggest since Lollipop has shown a legion of bugs is factory reset. If you have not tried it yet, we believe now is the right time to do it.

In the meantime, please keep us informed if this problem will be resolved by a factory reset so we can educate other readers about this solution.

Korean model Samsung Galaxy S5 showing multiple issues

Problem: Hi Harvey. There are problems on my S5 (SM-G9008) (Made in Korea) since I purchased it about a year ago.  (Eg. photo color changed after taking a shot, some icons do not respond, cannot edit icon screen, Wi-Fi icon shows connected but webpage shows not connected, etc). 

Is it possible to reinstall the OS and where can I get it? Thanks in advance. — Abbas

Troubleshooting: Hi Abbas. OTA (Over-the-air) update is made available by your network so if you want to install or update the current Android operating system, all you need to do is wait. If you can, please contact your network provider (that is the owner of the SIM card that you are using) and ask them if they can help you with it. In case they’ll say that you have to wait, you can also try to manually update your Android operating system through Samsung Kies application.

If you want to proceed with the manual update through Kies, you must have the following:

  • Internet connecter computer
  • Standard USB cable

Now here are the steps on how to update your phone using Kies:

  1. On your computer, make sure that you have the Kies app installed first. If this is your first time doing so, please head to Samsung’s site to down the correct version.
  2. Once you have downloaded or installed Kies, connect your S5 to your computer via the USB cable. Wait for a minutes for your computer to install the needed drivers.
  3. Start Kies on your computer so it will begin to check if your phone has the updated operating system. If your device does not have the latest available firmware, Kies will inform you accordingly. Just follow the on-screen instructions.

How to disable Android Auto update notification

Problem: Dear Sir/Madam. I have Galaxy S5 smartphone from Japan. I unlocked it so I can use another SIM from another country. The phone is ok and it runs well an automatic update keeps on popping up asking me to install a new update. The person who unlocked the phone has said that I should not install the update because the phone will be locked again. Now, everytime I open the phone a message pop ups telling me to install the downloaded updates and i have to cancel it. However, this pop up comes back up next time I open the phone again. How can I remove it and prevent the pop up from showing again? Please help. — Vishwa

Troubleshooting: Hi Vishwa. What you need to do here is to disable the Auto update feature so you don’t get the annoying update message every time. Just follow these steps:

  • Go to your App drawer and tap Apps.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Scroll down to About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Ensure that Auto update box is NOT checked.

That’s it! Your phone should now stop informing you to update your operating system.

Samsung Galaxy S5 fails to connect to mobile network after disconnecting from Wi-Fi

Problem: I’ve updated to Lollipop software last week. Silent mode has returned which is good.

One main issue is that my phone will not connect to a mobile internet network after I lost Wi-Fi connection! Smart switch is off (though I tested if it was the problem). What I’ve had to do is open “networks” and chose 2G/3G option and then back to 2G/3G/4G option and then it connects. 

Searching for a new network to connect does not do the trick.  So now I have to manually connect to my own mobile data network when I am out and about.

Do I need to clear my cache you think, after the updated? — Steven

Troubleshooting: Hi Steven. When Lollipop was still new a few months back, the most common cause for most of network-related issues was the smart network switch. If you have disabled this feature but the phone continues to show a network problem, we don’t think deleting the cache will help. Try to reset the phone to its factory defaults instead and see how it goes.
