Sony is known for using the Walkman app for its music player. The company has now decided to ditch the branding altogether and is using the solitary music app instead of Walkman. The reasoning behind this is not known at the moment, but it was first spotted on the Xperia Z4 Tablet and the Xperia M4 Aqua which were unveiled yesterday.
We should see the exclusion in all future Xperia devices going forward. Sony hasn’t shared more details on this, but it seems to be a simple cosmetic change and the functionality of the music player app should remain unchanged for the most part.
It will be interesting to see if Sony will remove the Walkman branding from older devices as well. This is a likely scenario given that the company is expected to begin rolling out the latest version of Android to its devices sometime soon.
Walkman was synonymous with the youth over 30 years ago when the iconic music player was launched by the company. The brand is diminishing now with not a lot of people familiar with the name. Sony has kept the legacy going by launching a couple of Walkman phones over the past 7-8 years, but none have managed to impress.
