Clearing storage space in a Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: Hi. I have spent a lot of time today Googling ways to solve the problem with emails and apps not downloading to my S5 because of insufficient space. I’ve tried every fix I could understand (some are just too technical for me to automatically know what to do). I’m still having the same problem. My S5 is 16GB and I have a 16GB SD Card installed. I have moved photos and videos to Dropbox but I have not deleted them from my phone. I’ve moved every app that would allow it to be saved on my SD card. I’ve emptied the cache of many apps although I don’t know what I am deleting by doing that! I have dialed the *#9900# number to delete dumpstate/logcat but Verizon tells me my call cannot be completed as dialed.
At the moment I have a pretty useless phone and I am horrified. I’m a real estate agent and need all my info on the fly constantly. No photos? No emails? No new apps? No updated old apps? I must have a dependable phone! What can I do?

Troubleshooting: Hi Ann. You’ve done almost anything a Samsung S5 user can do regarding this problem so we understand your frustration. If your phone keeps on telling you that there’s insufficient storage space left, especially when your email messages and apps are not downloading, this means that the internal memory unit (which is 16GB and not the SD card) may be running out of space. Try checking the available memory on your S5 by following these steps:
- Tap Apps.
- Touch Settings.
- Scroll to Storage and tap it.
Once you’ve opened the Storage app, you’ll see what items are eating up your storage space. The Available space section should give you an idea if your phone is indeed running out of space, depending on how much email messages you are planning to download to your phone. If the available space left is less than 1GB, that’s a good indicator that the phone is not acting up and that you must find a way to clear up the memory.
Check the Miscellaneous files section and look for items that you can delete to free more space.
If you have lots of videos, or hundreds of high resolution photos stored in the phone’s memory, move them to your 16GB SD card. Update files and email messages are usually stored in the phone’s main internal storage and not to an inserted SD card so maintaining 1GB in Available space can help you resolve this problem easily.
Also, keep your music files in your external SD card all the time but make sure you back them up in another device like a PC or device in case the SD card fails.
You’ve done a good job of creating copies of your files in the cloud like what you did when you transferred your photos and videos to Dropbox.
Samsung Galaxy S5 saying “Tab has crashed” error
Problem: Hi guys. My Galaxy S5 keeps driving me crazy anytime I do a search. The message “Tab has crashed” appears 90% of the time. I called Samsung and they could not help me. You are my last hope.
I’m a teacher and many of my kids have the same problem. Some say they are used to it but I’m not. Help please. — Laz
Troubleshooting: Hi Laz. Does this error comes up when using the stock internet browser? If it does, the only thing that you can do is to clear this app’s cache and data.
Here are the steps on who to clear cache and data:
- Go to Home screen.
- Open the Apps list.
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Applications.
- Touch Application manager.
- Look for the app in question.
- Tap Clear data.
- Tap OK.
- Tap Clear cache.
If the problem remains after doing the steps above, consider using a third party browser instead. You can try using Google Chrome or Mozilla’s Firefox for Android. Both works amazingly on any Samsung device.
Samsung Galaxy S5 shuts off after using the camera,Bluetooth issue on Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: I am with Verizon carrier in the US. These 2 problems started right after the update a couple of weeks ago, and still ongoing are as follows:
- When using the camera that came with the phone, the phone immediately shuts down. I have to pull the battery and reinsert to get it to power back on.
- I have a LG Bluetooth device paired to this phone and a second phone. It works fine for calls with both devices. It has for the almost year I have had this phone, and for 2 years with the previous smart phone. But, since the update, almost every time I end a call on the other device, my music automatically starts up on the S5. The other phone is my work phone. It is a Casio rugged flip. Thanks. — Tim
Troubleshooting: Hi Tim. You are our first reader who reported this camera problem to us. This can be an isolated case so here are the things that you can try to resolve the issue:
Clear app cache and data. The steps on how to do this solution are provided above. Deleting the camera app’s cache and its data will bring it back to its default state. If the camera’s drivers have been corrupted following the Lollipop update, deleting its data may resolve the issue.
Perform Safe Mode. There’s a chance that a third party application may be causing this problem. Bring your phone to Safe mode and try to check if the problem continues. If it does not, it means that one of the installed apps is the culprit. Try to uninstall the most recent apps you have installed, testing how the camera works every after app removal.
Do a factory reset. If you want to start fresh, performing a factory reset is your best choice. This ensures that your phone runs a fresh version of the operating system.
For your second issue, it’s highly possible that a Bluetooth bug has affected the pairing and configuration of your Bluetooth device. Try to unpair your LG Bluetooth device then pair it again to refresh the connection.
Try to factory reset the phone if pairing your phone to your Bluetooth device won’t work.
We are monitoring a lot of Bluetooth-related issues after S5s were updated to Lollipop. We will update this post once we have a definitive solution for your case.

Multiple problems observed after upgrading Samsung Galaxy S5 to Lollipop
Problem: I’ve never been so disgusted with a piece of hardware or software after an upgrade. It’s almost enough to make me go buy that fruit version of a phone.
I have the Verizon S5 and immediately after upgrade to 5.0.0 the battery life dropped an extreme amount. About once a week the warning about my battery overheating shows up, and stays there many hours, even overnight. I have to reboot the phone to get rid of that. Every time I reboot I get a popup saying “Android is upgrading…. Optimizing app one of one”. At least daily the touchscreen and buttons don’t respond for awhile – it gets about impossible to even power down – but eventually it wakes up. Next stop is a factory reset.
Do I sound frustrated?! Sorry. Suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks for all you do to help people. — Pat
Troubleshooting: Hi Pat. We have known for a few weeks now that Lollipop seems to be creating problematic ripples across Android pond. Even other Android devices that have updated to this operating system have their own unique set of problems so we think that the best thing that you can do here is to perform a factory reset. At this point, there’s no telling yet when Google will release a more stable and less problematic Lollipop version.
In the meantime, be watchful for any software update as they contain fixes for commonly observed bugs for this operating system. We know this sucks but let’s give Lollipop developers time to fix unforeseen problems.
Gmail app problem on Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: Help! Somehow, my Gmail account has been loaded into my general mail account, in addition to the standard Gmail app. My Gmail is so big I can’t seem to delete it from here, it just hangs. Additionally, I can’t effectively run my work email here because the bloated Gmail account living there compromises the speed of my work email rendering it useless. Any suggestions that don’t involve a factory reset?! Thanks! — Melissa
Troubleshooting: Hi Melissa. Because this involves a particular email app, we recommend that you try to clear the email app’s cache and data first before proceeding to factory restore. Deleting an app’s data is the equivalent of reinstalling a third party app. After deleting the app’s data, simply configure your emails again.
Verizon Message+ app not working properly in Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: Hi. While looking for a fix to my problem I came across your website and not seeing anyone else having this issue, I hope you can help.
So my issue is that I really like Verizon Message+ but whenever I set it as my default message application or even try to use it at all, my phone starts acting all wonky, freezes, changes screens and won’t let me actually interact with anything. I can’t use the back, home or tabs buttons and I have to hit the power button several times for it to respond. It will go to my “lock” menu without actually being locked, but not let me do anything on screen and will change backgrounds in the lock screen. It will then tell me I have 300+ unread messages and completely blacks my screen. I’ll only get like a blip of a second to hit cancel or back on the app itself when it pops up for that millisecond.
I’m not sure why and don’t see anyone else with this problem. To stop it, I have to either take my battery out or keep holding and re-holding my power till I can power off. When powered on it immediately switches back to Samsung messages as my default and close Messages+ which is for some reason still in my active tabs.
Any ideas, suggestions, tips or fixes would be greatly appreciated. —Brad
Troubleshooting: Hi Brad. Verizon’s Message+ is reputedly stable and has minimal bugs based on reports from users. We believe that this is an isolated case on your phone so the best thing that you can do here is to delete the app’s cache and data. As mentioned in one of the posts above, deleting an app’s data is like reinstalling the app itself. It’s a very effective step for any app issue.
However, if this problem started happening after updating KitKat to Lollipop, we recommend that you skip deleting the app’s cache and instead do a factory reset right away. Doing so will not only help you with resolve this problem but also the power button and “lock” menu issues you mentioned here.
We cannot give you any explanations why you have issues you mentioned other than they may be caused by a corrupt operating system. Performing a factory reset should fix all of them.
Samsung Galaxy S5 MMS issue after switching from AT&T to Straight Talk
Problem: Dear DroidGuy. I have an International unlocked S5 with Lollipop that I recently switched from AT&T to Straight talk, and I began having issues with my MMS messages. We troubleshot it and found out the APN settings were wrong and we needed to update the settings. We tried doing the normal software download but the settings didn’t change so we decided to delete the current settings and add a new APN. OOOPS! Now it won’t let me add a new APN, so there are currently no APN settings which means no data etc. When I click the plus sign it just vibrates and if I hold it it just says new APN, but no edit screen or change from the blank white nothingness. Samsung doesn’t have an answer and neither does my carrier. Can you help? Sincerely, Adam.
Troubleshooting: Hi Adam. The way we understand your problem is that you have an International version of S5, which you initially provisioned for AT&T, but after switching to Straight Talk it stopped allowing you to use data, among others. The best solution for this problem is to buy an AT&T SIM card from Straight Talk. Make sure you are not buying the T-Mobile card as they sell both of them.
Once you have the new SIM card, insert it and change the APN settings accordingly.

Samsung Galaxy S5 black screen issue after unboxing
Problem: I just bought a Galaxy S5 on Amazon. I installed the battery and turned the phone on and everything worked just fine. But when I went to the store to activate the phone I got the famous black screen I am hearing about. It makes noises and the buttons on the bottom light up but the screen just stays black. Keep in mind I have only had it for about 30 min since I opened the box. I got frustrated and smacked the phone with the palm of my hand and the screen turned on just like magic and it seems I get the black screen every time I smack it “gently” with my hand. I am going to try to return it to Amazon but I was thinking it’s more of a sensitivity problem or software problem that could be fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. — Gus
Troubleshooting: Hi Gus. We don’t know if this response will reach you in time but we believe that the best thing that you can do here is proceed with a replacement from Amazon. If a powerful phone like an S5 starts having an issue 30 minutes after unboxing, that’s never a good sign. Black screen issues on Samsung Galaxy S5s are caused by hardware failure more than software, which makes it more serious a problem as you can normally factory reset a phone to resolve most software glitches.

Star icon on notification panel after Samsung Galaxy S5 has been updated to Lollipop
Problem: Hi there. I moved from Blackberry to Samsung last week and have had nothing but problems.
- Viber – I don’t get a little red notification on my Viber icon.
- The phone told me there was an update yesterday, so I ran it. Now, when I swipe the notification panel down, the sound button only has ‘sound’ and ‘vibrate’ options – the silent option has vanished. How do I put the phone into silent mode without going into settings every time?
- On the top, in the notification bar, on the right side, a star has appeared since I did the update and I don’t know what it is (have gone through a heap of forums).
I am so very frustrated with this phone and have spent many hours trying to sort, to no avail.
Any help you can provide, will be hugely appreciated.

Troubleshooting: Hi Dawn. We are yet to dig deeper into your first issue regarding your Viber application. Have you tried reinstalling it? We will update this answer in the next few days once we have a solution for this specific problem.
For your second issue, you are correct in your observation that silent mode has vanished in Lollipop. While not necessarily convenient for many Android users, Google developers decided to remove it without providing a convincing reason for it. The good thing is, Samsung has decided to bring Silent mode back in the next Lollipop update. In the meantime, you can customize your phone to give you an equivalent Silent mode by changing Interrupt mode. Simply go to Menu>Settings>Sound & Notifications>interruptions and change the following sections:
None. If you select this option, your alarms won’t go off and you will not receive any tone notifications.
Priority. This option will allow some notifications from certain apps and calls to go through.
All. This slider will allow all notifications to go through.
For your third question regarding the star on the notification panel, the answer lies on how you setup Interruptions mode. The star icon is an indicator that tells users that Priority section under Interruptions mode is enabled. This means that only calls and notifications appear you consider important will be displayed.
If you want to remove this star icon, simply select All under Interruptions mode.
